Le Damn Dog - Watch Out

Le Damn Dog - Watch Out
(Exclusive limited MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) Rprdkt, 2009-09-12

Rprdkt is home label of parisian band Le Damn Dog.
LE DAMN DOG is a hellhound of a new project from top Parisian DJ-producer Erik Rug and DJ-MC Dynamax from the South Bronx.
The surprise element is the musical tree on which the pair have chosen to cock their leg: a slavering mix of, hiphop and rock'n'roll delivered with pure punk attitude.
Watch Out bangs together Erik's Stooges-style raw power guitar barrages with Dynamax's new-found 'Black John Wayne' persona, howling or panting to ram home the hard-hitting lyrics.
Attention: The title has such an infectious hook that surely makes it an instant radio friendly number.
Watch out is seriously getting attention from radio stations as it just been hammered on Radio Nova (France) this last summer, while it now also entered Couleur3's (CH) playlist since sept.
Dont be surprised if you hear it on your favorite local radio station soon!

Watch Out will also be available as a limited 7 inch vinyl, including a reggae remix by dubmeister Grant Phabao on the b-side...

Already having props from Djs like Rob Mello, Laurent Garnier, Dj Cosmo, Kris Needs, Dave Haslam, Donald D, Lord Jazz (Lotug), Radio Nova (fr) Couleur3 (ch), Radio Grenouille (Fr)

Kactus Hunters - Born 2 Fight!

Kactus Hunters - Born 2 Fight!
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) Mind Service, 2009-08-29

A psychedelic project re-unifying old pals Doctor L and Mister Baby (from french funk band F.F.F.), Kactus Hunters is quite amazing... Melting psyched pop, astral rock, abstract hip hop and free jazz into futuristic downtempo funk, the album Unlimited Land released in 2006 has been blowing minds ever since with its malicious audio and visual hallucinations. Collectors might want to try to file this between Funkadelic and Funkstorung, or between Pink Floyd and Autechre.
We're happy to offer here another piece of the Kactus Hunters puzzle, with an exclusive unreleased take of Born 2 Fight!, all rough and trippy, soulful abstract hip-hop.

Lyrics Born - I Like It, I Love It (Grant Phabao Remix)

Lyrics Born - I Like It, I Love It (Grant Phabao Remix)
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-08-13

When Berkeley hip hop meets Jamaican reggae...

Pressure keeps on rising for the upcoming releases of Grant Phabao's three (!) new albums with The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston and The Jays (on his own label T.I.M.E.C. co-run with Djouls and Captain Detendu)... The french dubmeister offers here a bouncy reggae rework of I Like It, I Love It, taken from last year's hit album Everywhere At Once (released on Quannum/ANTI). It's kind of a cousin of the N.A.S.A. remix he did earlier this year (featuring David Byrne and Chuck D.!) - all party-style with its rolling drum breaks and hookish chorus-like lyrics all along! A certified floor filler already tested and approved by fellow DJ Erik Rug at is famous WaxGroove nights.

More Grant Phabao remixes to be released and/or podcasted soon for Tosca, Diesler feat. Laura Vane, Antipop Consortium, Le Damn Dog, Ocote Soul Sounds (all official ones!)...

Antibalas and Doctor L - Family Affair

Antibalas and Doctor L - Family Affair
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDJs.com) Mind Service, 2009-08-02

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra had some spare time during their last 2006 french tour... They jumped in Doctor L's studio on a lazy sunday afternoon, and cooked with him a killer afrobeat version of Sly Stone's classic Family Affair! At the end of the day, this future classic was done and everything's in there: Fela-inspired vocals from the all-mighty Amayo, phat afro-broken beat, sweat horns and chorus vocals and the magic Doctor's touch on the production... A Strictly limited 45 was released on the Mind Service label, quickly selling out. Comes summer 2009, Martin Perna and Amayo visiting us in Paris, recording new tracks with either Grant Phabao or Doctor L, partying all together with Curumin... and a brand new mix of this famous Sly Stone cover cooked by Doctor L especially for Paris DJs! Martin Perna, Antibalas' leader, will be back in those pages quite soon with an exclusive mix of unreleased rarities from Antibalas and from his Afro-Latin project Ocote Soul Sounds and Adrian Quesada (who just released a third fantastic album, get it asap!)...

Michael Jackson - Rockin' Robin (Grant Phabao Remix)

Michael Jackson - Rockin' Robin (Grant Phabao Remix)
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-07-21

Rockin' Robin is a 1958 song by Bobby Day. The single was Day's only hit single, becoming a No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit. The song was covered by The Hollies on their first album in 1964 and would be revived as a single again in 1972 by the teenaged Michael Jackson as his second single release on Motown. Jackson took his version to number two on the U.S. pop singles chart that year. The french dubmeister Grant Phabao pays here his due tribute to the king of pop, with a reggae remix of this pop/rhythm and blues cover of a fifties song - rockin' the dancehall and burnin' one for the man!
Doctor L's new single Never Play Me, from his forthcoming album We Got Lost, is the new free virtual single for Paris DJs! Backed by the unique beat of the allmighty Tony Allen, with the help of poet/songwriter Allonymous, Doctor L is back to afrobeat, as usual with a touch of folk, psychedelia and spiritual jazz...
As often with Paris DJs, Never Play Me is exclusive, and once again you'll have the chance to listen to music you don't hear on the radio! You never play me on your station, why, why, is something wrong with me?...

Grant Phabao's list of remixes is becoming months after months quite a treat, and we keep on feeding him with cool big hitters a cappelas to work his skank and dub magic on. George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, AC/DC (!), Q-Tip and Cee-Lo all got their proper rework, offered for free in remixed form, here on Paris DJs. BUT Q-Tip got the exclusive Grant Phabao treatment twice and we didn't want Erykah Badu (one of the most wonderful American voices of our time) to be jealous, so here's a second reggae take on a track from the New AmErykah Part.1 album. As usual, our friend and neighbour Erik Rug tells us he successfully tested the track on the floor and 100 percent supports the roots Jamaican vibe coupled with the heavy boombastic production skills from the french dubmeister.

Big Daddy Kane vs Connie Price & The Keystones - Give A Demonstration Part.2 (Grant Phabao Remix)

Big Daddy Kane vs Connie Price and The Keystones - Give A Demonstration Part.2 (Grant Phabao Remix)
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-06-19

Connie Price and the Keystones began as a recording project for Stones Throw's Now-Again label involving Dan Ubick (Breakestra, Madlib's Sound Directions) and Todd M. Simon (Macy Gray, Antibalas, El Michels Affair). Combining elements of soul, afro beat, dub reggae, late 60's/early 70's film scores, and psychedelic rock and jazz into a soundtrack for the best film you've never seen. After the superb Wildflowers album on Now-Again in 2004, Connie Price and the Keystones joined forces with Big Daddy Kane in 2007 for an exclusive 12-inch in the Scion A/V series, revisiting the classic Big Daddy Kane track Give A Demonstration with new vocals from the smooth operator himself, over some heavy badass funk. The vinyl is quite rare and you'll have to pay 40 Euros now to get it... You won't find this track on their Tell Me Something soundtrack-inspired hip hop album from 2008, but, hopefully, the track will appear on the upcoming new full length Connie Price and the Keystones are currently in the studio working on with Big Daddy Kane. Look out for this new piece of NY funk/hip hop hybrid to appear at the end of the year... Meanwhile here's an exclusive new rework of this rare track, taylored-dressed into party-skanking reggae by our french dubmeister Grant Phabao. A smashing hit, again!? What do YOU think?

Baby Charles - Hardman To Please (Grant Phabao Remix)

Baby Charles - Hardman To Please (Grant Phabao Remix)
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-06-13

During the last two years Brighton based deep funk sensation Dionne Charles has risen to quite a cult status. Her first album with her band Baby Charles was among the finest things to happen in Funk in 2008, supported by the likes of Snowboy, Keb Darge, Jazzman Gerald, Monk One, Andy Smith and Mark Lamarr... we even managed to play their Artic Monkeys cover in an afro mix on the ParisDJs podcast!

She also appeared, among others, on Black Grass' fantastic III album (Catskills Records), on The New Mastersounds instant classic LP Plug & Play (One Note Records) and more recently on Soopasoul's superb Twin Stix album (Japaleno Records).

Simultaneously tight but loose, heavy but soulful and dirty, Baby Charles' funky music is indeed beautiful and thanks to Nick at Record Kicks we're proud to present this soulful ska dressing of Hardman to Please by the french dubmeister, Grant Phabao! Baby Charles are currently in the studio recording the new album which is expected for March 2010. They plan to blast everyone out of this cosmos with a whole bunch of new killer songs. We hope there will be another song to reggae-remix in there so that a nice Baby Charles reggae 45 might be pressed in the future...

The mighty Grant Phabao, who's all about bringing back the original King Tubby sound with a modern twist, injects some perfect-for-a-Friday irie type of vibes into N.A.S.A.'s Money feat. David Byrne, Chuck D, Ras Congo, Seu Jorge and Z-Trip.
In doing so, the dub master successfully turns this big big choon into a laid back, smooth grooving 100% Reggae Jam. Enjoy! (knewjack on Squeak E Clean's blog)

Thanks to our resident DJ Soulist who booked The Herbaliser recently at La Maroquinerie in Paris, I had the chance to meet Ollie Teeba in the backstage and tell him about an upcoming reggae remix of Can't Help This Feeling that we were preparing for the Paris DJs virtual releases collection. He was really enthousiastic about it, saying the track could really work well in reggae mode and giving us his benediction... So here's the finished thing, with rumbling horns and skanking hooks, taylor-fit for all shaking dancefloors - another Grant Phabao instant hit!.. but I guess you're used to that kind of standard now. (Djouls)
Roots Manuva vs Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem For A Witness (Paris DJs Soundsystem Remix)
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-04-10

We played this bootleg so many times at parties (to the dancers' delight), that we decided to fully remaster the thing and share it with everyone. We took the instrumental version of 'Requiem Pour Un Con' from Serge Gainsbourg, and tweaked it with the a capella from Roots Manuva's 'Witness'. The resulting track is driven by its fat and funky groove, erupting with a peculiar, sophisticated sense of rythm and harmonics. For those who haven't heard this bootleg yet, just expect the unexpected!

Mr Vegas feat. Alozade & Hollow Point - Under Me Sensi (Grant Phabao Remix)

(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-03-27

The Grant Phabao recipe :
Take a smokin' dancehall hit, a true ganja song. Remove the instrumental crust, usually a digital riddim without much musicanship in it. Take the vocal part and dress it carefully with a brand new 70's reggae skanking riddim, with Jamaican heavy drumming and delicate percussions, guitar licks and melodious organ chords. Don't hesitate to spread a good slice of breaks into the beats. Leave it to rest for a few months. The final cooking part consist in a few days of getting that huge booming sound that goes with reggae. Spice with bits of echo and delay. And finally, don't forget to serve the resulting classic herb tune with an already fired-up big bammy!
Jon Kennedy - We Milk Life But Skank Smooth (Grant Phabao Remix)
(Exclusive MP3 download on ParisDjs.com) 2009-03-06

Jon Kennedy learned to play the drums at the age of 12 or 13 and started to record his own crazy tracks on a 4 track straight away.. Before that he was listening to War Of The Worlds OST and my brothers rock music, strumming along to them on his guitar, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Kiss etc. After 3 really cool trip-hop-like albums on Tru Thoughts and Grand Central Records, he'll release a new album, '14', this summer on Organik Recordings. Expect Rock, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk... all of a heavy nature from the drum perspective. This skanking (and exclusive) Grant Phabao remix takes a song from his previous "Useless Wooden Toys" album into Jamaican territories. The Bristol beatmaster dressed with dreads... Enjoy!

For those left who don't know who the guy is, Q-Tip is a former member of the famous hip hop band A Tribe Called Quest. He's just released a new solo album, which is quite good even for some major company shit. He'll be playing in Paris on March, 9th at l'Elysee Montmartre, but the show is already sold out. If you haven't got your ticket already then you haven't been ripped of 44 Euros (yes you've read it: 44 fucking Euros). We're kind enough to appease any hyped feelings of yours with a free and exclusive remix of the single Q-Tip had released just before his "Renaissance" album. It's called "Work It Out" and was only available as a promo 12 inch released in 2007. Now here's the Grant Phabao reggae remix - another instant neo-retro classic, as if recorded decades ago at Studio One in Jamaica...
Info :
FEVER ON THE FLOOR
The Ranger is back... another winner from all-mighty Phabao... As good on the dancefloor as previous 'Message To You Rudie', 'Fever' brings fever on the floor... - Manu Boubli (Comet/Mind)

ORIGINAL FLAVOUR OF JAMAICAN TEMPO
I kept it the original flavour this time. I choose different riddims (than last year). It's a different vibe. Those tracks are Jamaican tempo this time, not Phabao tempo. - The Lone Ranger on RangerStyle.com

FEVER 70's DEEJAY STYLE
For all these years I wanted to do 'Fever' and I had to wait until I met Phabao and TIMEC to get it right. It's a combination style of Ranger, singer and deejay. Counteracting styles. Gliding in deejay style. Original 70 deejay style of Lone Ranger, you know. - The Lone Ranger on rangerstyle.com

THE GODFATHER OF RUB A DUB
If U-Roy is the godfather of Deejays, Lone Ranger is without a doubt the godfather of Rub A Dub! Author of 4 unforgettable albums in the seventies, the concealed veteran (his name is a borrowing of western novels of the times) keeps on surprising us since with sporadic singles - but of a constant quality. At the origin of the first soundsystem in Paris in 1979, he comes back 20 years after, always followed by his partner Chester (also present in 79 at Paris!). - The Lone Ranger on Heartical.net

MY NAME IS THE LONE RANGER
Back in those days most deejays had cowboy names. One night I was deejaying and I introduced a tune with the words: 'Right now this one badder than Dillinger, tougher than Eastwood! My name is the Lone Ranger, that's why I act like a stranger!'. It just came out like that and from that time the name stuck with me. - The Lone Ranger on rebelbase.be
Info :
A few months ago we received some bootleg MP3s of Grant Phabao riddims that had leaked on the p2p, credited to the 'Booty Smash Soundsystem'. It's probably the same guys who sent us a copy of this glorious 7 inch, for which they said 'only 100 copies were pressed, in Jamaica'...

Stevie's magic voice on Phabao's 'new vintage' 70s reggae production works so well we decided to share this track with you - Reggae Soul at its best!

You can hear the Cee-Lo vs Phabao bootleg in the Molesting Laura Vol.7 mix by Grant Phabao & Djouls, from way back in May 2007 - Soulful hip hop dressed in classy reggae stylings...
Press Release :
What do you call a project featuring modern Jazz/Fusion/Jam's most ubiquitous guitarist, Roots Reggae music's most prolific drummer, and three players from the biggest American Reggae band in the world?

Rockamovya brings together long time Jazz-heavyweight, Grammy nominated Will Bernard (Motherbug, Stanton Moore trio, Dr. Lonnie Smith), the incomparable Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace (Burning Spear, The Abyssinians, the cult film classic "Rockers") and Ryan Newman (bass), Marcus Urani (organ/keys/piano) and Harrison Stafford (rhythm guitar/ vocals) of the internationally acclaimed Cali-based Reggae-Fusion group Groundation for what will surely be a genre-defying classic of an album.

Rockamovya is already generating a strong buzz within the more traditional music industry, as well as the ever-growing conscious music community. The expansive and altogether new sound Rockamovya emits is due in large part to the inter-generational links the album has created. Whether its Horsemouth's 1960's era steppers rhythms, Bernard's 1970's inspired jazz-funk licks, or the wholly unique 21st century roots sound of Groundation, Rockamovya reaches across demographics and genres to entice and enthral listeners of any and every tribe.

The Procussions - Simple Song (Grant Phabao Remix)

The Procussions - Simple Song (Grant Phabao Remix)
(12" virtual release/MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) Rawkus/T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC122, 2006-11-14

Review :
In those hard times when government individuals thrive more and more on the poor, it's really nice to meet educated and involved artists. The Procussions are that kind of people, nice, intelligent and with something to say, without ever losing their natural cool. This is rare enough to be pointed out...
Their latest album, "5 Sparrows For 3 Cents", was released earlier this year in the US but only in november 2006 in Europe. It's top-of-the-notch L.A. hip hop, funky, old school, with plenty of sunshine, so we thought at Paris DJs headquarters that it could be a good idea to try and do a collaboration with them, that could also help promote their french tour.
The band got into the idea right away and soon -thanks to the Internet- the french dubmeister Grant Phabao, who recently reworked some George Clinton, Lee McDonald, Ty or Alice Russell tracks, received some vocal parts to play with...
A few days later a new reggae instrumental was born, wonderfully gracing The Procussions' track with skanking riffs, heavy bass, clavinets chops, echo, reverb and lots of percussion - Phabao style.
This is hip hop/reggae mashing-up at his best, we're just plain proud to offer you this as a free download. Get it while it's hot and don't miss the rest of the tour (see dates below).
"Grant Phabao did it again! Killer stuff. French mashup master is in the place." (Manu Boubli/Comet Records)
Already supported by Erik Rug (Les Disques du Telegraphe/Radio FG), Loik Dury (Kraked/Paris DJs), Betino's Record Shop, Soul Stereo Sound System...
Hipsters into Afrobeat won't be disappointed with a new single from Antibalas (covering Sly Stone with Doctor L!!!), the first Budos Band album or the Dakataris reissue on Daptone Records, two Nomo albums (because we prefered the first one, released some time ago), and a french release from Fire Tongue and Chief Cook. That's what we call a grand buffet.
Mind Service & Records MINDDL005/PARISDJS004, 2006-09-12

Review :
Forward thinking never ends with french cult producer Doctor L...
After an astonishing series of 4 new INCREDIBLE albums in less than 2 years on his new label Mind (check djouls.com), and a collectable series of limited 7 and 12 inches concluding with an amazing cover of Sly Stone's "Family Affair", with brooklyn nÃÂ1 afrobeateers Antibalas (!), the Doctor is back with a collection of goodies from various projects once again aggregated into "Forgotten Tracks From Da Hard Drive", a full-flowing concept-album of electronic acid grooves, slams and vibes. Extracted from this new album [exclusively for ParisDJs.com web galaxy!!] is "Kind Of Dry", featuring Spontane's MC Jester, a blast of punk slam soaked in pure Doctor L electronic-acid-orgasonics. The New Thing happens HERE! Djouls
The Mackrosoft - The Immortality Project (Grant Phabao Remix)
Mackrosoft Records/T.I.M.E.C. MS0009R/TIMEC117/PARISDJS003, 2006-08-01

Info :
This track is not for music categories, but for recipe books : take elements from a US West coast jazz/funk lounge number [For example, "The Immortality Project" by Seattle's funkateers The Mackrosoft]. Select the 70's groovy melody of the Fender Rhodes and wah-wah guitar, of course. Cherish the sax licks from multiple-man Skerik. Don't forget the organ stylings from former Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark. Then get the whole thing drenched into deep dub territory by expert in sound manipulation Grant Phabao. Don't get lost into deep Studio One or Rhythm & Sound dub but instead keep a nice electro jazz funky vibe flowing. You can now call it a "remix"... and start spreading the news!

DJ Guarana - Latino Fiesta In Paris

DJ Guarana - Latino Fiesta In Paris
(12" virtual release/MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC058/PARISDJS002, 2006-07-27

Tracklisting:
A1. Dj Guarana & Gino Rossi - Latino Party!

Info :
Our second virtual release is a mix of samba and electronic grooves, with an undeniable measure of humor that revels in the duality of being both respectfully influenced by and satyrically critical of the Latin-meets-electronic music sound. The music in itself is a nice mix of Latin percussion and melodies, done up in a smooth, slightly French nu-jazz style.
