During the second half of the 90s, Galactic become one of the leading bands of the american acid jazz scene, along with The Greyboy Allstars, Medeski Martin & Wood and a few others. Two mainly instrumental albums recall this story, "Coolin' Off" (1996) and "Crazyhorse Mongoose" (1998), two not-to-be-missed albums at the time of their release, two historical pieces now.

Having toured for a few years with quite a lot of bands from the "jambands" scene (Moe., Gov't Mule, String Cheese Incident... let's say a scene rather "jazz-rock" than "jazz-funk"), Galactic operate at the end of the 20th century a change of direction towards a rocker groove, armoured with high-octane energy, as manifested in their best album to this day, "Late For The Future" (2000), a bomb of New Orleans jazz/funk/rock fusion, still unstoppable - eight years later!

2001 sees the release of the "Live At Tipitina's" recorded at the end of the 20th century in New Orleans. The album will be available worldwide but only the Japanese pressing offers a bonus disc, with the Thriple Threat DJs guesting, announcing a new era of "on stage" meetings between jambands improvised grooves and American rappers. As soon as the 2002 Bonnaroo Festival, you could see bands such as Jurassic 5 sharing the stage with bands like Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh and Friends, Galactic, Trey Anastasio, etc. [For the little history, a certain DJ Logic had paved the way by playing with the cream of New York Jazz musicians for many years...] Galactic wil then share the stage with The Roots, Lyrics Born, The Pharcyde, the Triple Threat crew, Kid Koala, Z-Trip, and will even invite graffiti artists SKW and Doze to paint during their live set, on their 2002 "Sight of Sound" tour!

Logically, the next Galactic album, "Ruckus" (2003), is produced by Dan The Automator (Dr Octagon, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Gorillaz, Deltron 3030). Consequently, does their New Orleans funk turn into trip-hop? Not. The jams are controlled to the extreme, Galactic may now try themselves at songwriting. Jazz, blues, electronica, latin, and hip-hop sound (with heavy drums and bass fronting) get along in perfect harmony to the marshy funk of those galactics, who so become among the first to try this fusion between the live scene ("jam bands") and studio producers (may they be "hip hop" or "electronic").

Durant les 3 années qui s'ensuivent, c'est surtout la star du groupe, le batteur Stanton Moore, qui aura une activité discographique fournie, en participant au super-groupe The Clinton Administration ("the Songs of Sly & Family Stone", 2003), à un album de Corrosion of Conformity (In The Arms of God", 2005), un de Bobby Previte ("The Coalition Of The Willing", 2006), deux de son side-project avec Charlie Hunter, Skerik et Mike Dillon, Garage à Trois ("Emphasizer", 2003 et "Outre Mer", 2005), un album du clavier des Greyboy Allstars, Robert Walter ("Super Heavy Organ", 2005), et surtout un fantastique troisième album solo ("III", 2006)... (et j'en oublie!)
During the following 3 years, it's especially the star of the band, the drummer, Stanton Moore, who'll be the most discographicaly active, by participating in the super-group The Clinton Administration ("The Songs of Sly and Family Stone", 2003), by collaborating with Corrosion of Conformity ("In The Arms of God", 2005), Bobby Previte ("The Coalition Of The Willing", 2006), without forgetting two albums of his side-project Garage à Trois, with Charlie Hunter, Skerik and Mike Dillon ("Emphasizer", 2003 and "Outre Mer", 2005), a solo album from the Greyboy Allstars' keyboards player, Robert Walter ("Super Heavy Organ", 2005), or and foremost a fantastic third solo album ("III", 2006)... (and I'm forgetting some!)

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Funk With Kids

grant phabao and djouls Funk With Kids
Grant Phabao & Djouls - Funk With Kids
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-01-19

Info :
A mix that's been nearly a year in preparation, a mix that started with the best 'Funk For Kids' dispositions, but ended in a 'Funk WITH Kids' way all grown-ups should enjoy too. We've been digging for months for those kiddie funk tracks, and thanks to the "ABC's of Kid Soul" compilation recently released by the Numero Group (ditributed by the friendly Differ-Ant people over here in France), we've finally managed to round up quite a surprising soundtrack of electic grooves with kids (or choirs of kids) singing...

Also a special big-up to Medeski Martin & Wood's new album of music for kids on Little Monster Records, 'Let's Go Everywhere', which showcases the versatility of our favorite jazz band out there. You'll aslo find John Medeski playing keyboards along with Steven Bernstein (from Sex Mob) on trumpet and Sharon Jones on vocals (with a few others...) on the 'Baby Loves Jazz' album - one that all parents should get when they get tired of FM Radio and other kinds of debilitating kids music, one that will ravish the youngsters in the backseat!

Finally, everybody must know the Justice 'D.A.N.C.E.' track by now, but we've taken the liberty of playing just before this one a bit of the track that must have inspired such a worldwide single, the MASSIVE hit from Erik Rug and MC Dynamax, remixed by L'Aroye & Kÿ, 'Tribute To My People'. If you don't own this 12 inch yet, find yourself a new record supplier cos' this was THE track of 2006. Nuff' said.

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.8

Grant Phabao & Djouls - Are Molesting Laura Vol.8
(MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2008-01-02

Info :
We've prepared four new mixes in the "Molesting Laura" series, which, as you might already know, are be all about covers, mashups and classic tracks reworked in a brand new style, even though sometimes the series ventures towards a strange mixture of Latin music (but not for those mixes)... And if you're still guessing who this mysterious Laura is, let's just say that the owls are not what people think they are...

Served first is Grant Phabao & Djouls are Molesting Laura Vol.8, an incredible funk'n'disco mix of smashing covers and clobbering re-edits. Expect to dig memories of Matata, The Meters, Rage Against The Machine, Kool And The Gang, James Brown, The Beatles, Vanilla Fudge or even John Barry's theme from "Superman"... This is heavy dancefloor business for funk lovers, and we can only hope that our favorite incredible melting entertainment compagnons Grant Phabao & Djouls will keep on "Molesting Laura" for a long, long time.

You might then want to check Grant Phabao & Djouls are Molesting Laura Vol.9, an "All Directions In Jazz" dish of old and new reworks of soul, rock, pop, funk, house or even Ethiopian jazz. The covers range from Herbie Hancock, Eumir Deodato, The Cure, Outkast, Isolée, Mulatu Atsaké to Marvin Gaye, in classy jazz dressings. 30 minutes of jazz hit-singles eclectism for an intense and swinging trip - don't pass out on this!
[ONLINE NEXT MONDAY - JANUARY 7]

If you're not tired yet of all this craziness in music, you might then be the lucky listener of Grant Phabao & Djouls are Molesting Laura Vol.10, a really "out there" combination of soul, ska, funk, balakanese beats, swing, hip hop, rock and pop; with covers of Dusty Springfield, Herbie Hancock (again), Kylie Minogue, Outkast (again, too!), The Cure (again, also!), Van Morrison or Johnny Pate, but also some strange mashups of Peggy Lee and Iggy Pop, and of The Flaming Lips and Marvin Gaye. This has got to be heard to be believed!
[ONLINE THE SATURDAY AFTER - JANUARY 12]

Finally, to cool things down a little bit, we've cooked a wicked set of soul and funk reggae covers, Grant Phabao & Djouls are Molesting Laura Vol.11, which got us digging quite deep into our Jamaican funk compilations, albums and singles, for some smokin' takes on The Temptations, The White Stripes, Lalo Schifrin, Dusty Springfield, The Meters, Stevie Wonder, William DeVaughn, Billy Paul or Syl Johnson.
[ONLINE THE SUNDAY AFTER - JANUARY 20]
