The Paris DJs German connection runs deep in time. Summer 2007 we were inviting Tobias Kirmayer from funk/jazz/afro new releases and reissues label Tramp Records - his Freestyle party mix is still available and has became one of our classics. When we saw he was releasing a Soul and Funk Chistmas compilation this year we couldn't pass on inviting him for our annual xmas mix. The Woima Collective was born from deep within the brass section of renowned German funk unit Poets Of Rhythm, as tenor sax player Johannes Schleiermacher became immersed in the rhythms and modes of the African music that the Poets love so much. Combining the tight funk of groups like The Heliocentrics and the Poets Of Rhythm, with gnarly abyssinian brass and classic Mulatu-esque organ licks, the twelve tracks on Tezeta breeze into Europe on the Siroccan winds. At times, the band nods to dubby workouts like on the track No Way But Still Walking, at other times the brass section threaten to get free and atonal on the album closer Wilder Mann. Nevertheless Tezeta takes the cohesive pulse of North Africa, and fits it in a groove that will run and run for days. The Woima Collective celebrates the hypnotic beauty of Ethiopian scales and African rhythms, but creates an unique sound out of those influences, leaving lots of space for the individual band members to do their dance.

Festival Sons d'Hiver : Bitches Brew Revisited / Ebo Taylor & Afrobeat Academy

Le concert à ne pas manquer en ce début d'année 2011 aura lieu en région parisienne durant le festival de Val de Marne Sons d'Hiver. Il réunira le même soir un bon barouf de jazz psychédélique avec un hommage à Miles Davis par le supergroupe Bitches Brew Revisited (avec, entre autres pointures, Graham Haynes, DJ Logic et Marco Benevento!), ainsi que le retour du guitariste ghanéen Ebo Taylor accompagné des funksters de l'Afrobeat Academy (Poets of Rhythm/Whitefield Brothers...) que nous avions programmé à la Bellevilloise en juillet 2009 dernier!!
