Black Mans Cry The Inspiration of Fela Kuti
Various - Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration Of Fela Kuti
(4x10" boxset/CD) Now-Again/Stones Throw NA50566, 2010-02-23

Fela's music, and that of his organization inspired musicians across the global village when Afro-Beat was new and novel. This compilation focuses on the music Fela inspired – whether by fellow Nigerians recording alongside him in the early 70s, neighbors in Ghana, then-modern Colombian cumbia ensembles inspired by the man who injected a new feel into the Yoruban rhythms that formed cumbia's base, Trinidadian steel bands or the select few organizations left that have maintained Fela's fury in the new millennium. Compiler Egon has written extensive liner notes – and sourced never before seen Fela photos and other ephemera - for this project, included in the hardbound book that contains the CD and in a large-format booklet in the 4 x 10” vinyl box set.

The Whitefield Brothers – Earthology
(CD/LP/Digital) Now Again/Stones Throw NA5047, 2010-01-11

While In The Raw's hypnotic, defiantly psychedelic funk music was grounded in the great musical traditions of both America and Africa, Earthology finds the Brothers infusing their funk with musical traditions that span the globe. With this new album, The Whitefield Brothers - and a multitude of guests ranging from vocalists Edan, Mr. Lif, Bajka, Percee P and MED to musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Quantic, Poets of Rhythm and the Dap-Kings - blend together what might seem to be disparate music into global-psychedelic-jazz using the fierce funk their fans have grown to love.

Ebo Taylor & Afrobeat Academy - Love Is Not Too Far - Live in Paris 2009 | Comments: 0

Ebo Taylor & Afrobeat Academy - Love Is Not Too Far
(Exclusive YouTube video from ParisDjs.com) 2009-08-23

Ebo Taylor, the legendary composer, arranger and musician from Ghana took the stage for the first time in Europe, together with artists of the internationally assigned Afrobeat Academy (featuring musicians from the Poets Of Rhythm, Karl Hector & the Malcouns, Kabu Kabu and Fela's Afrika 70's guitarist Oghene Kologobo), in Paris on July 17th, 2009 (organized by Rockers International & Paris DJs) and in Frankfurt on July 18th, 2009 (organized by Africadelay & Analog Africa).

The exceptional guitar player is considered as one of the most distinguished Highlife, Afro beat and jazz composers of Ghana. Between 1962 and 1965 he studied together with his friend Fela Kuti at the renowned Eric Guilder School of Music in London. As early as the 50th and 60th he caused quite a sensation as the head of the Stargazers Dance Band as well as the Broadway Band. In the early 70th he headed the best known Big Band of Ghana, the 'Uhuru Band' (later called Uhurus) and so formed the Highlife.

Since the 70th Taylor produced different albums as solo artist and developed more and more his own, innovative and distinctive style - recognisable for instance on his albums "Ebo Taylor and the Pelicans" or "Twer Nyame". Ebo has been very active in numerous projects as session musician. Besides his solo works, he contributed significantly to the development of music in Ghana, as arranger and producer to the big labels in Ghana, like Essiebons and Gapophone. For these labels, being their musical director, he produced i.e. well known musicians such as C.K. Mann of the Apagya Show Band, a legendary All-Star-Highlife-Funk-Band, or artists like Pat Thomas, Jewel Ackah and Papa Yankson.

Lovers of Afro beat, Highlife and Afro jazz may now wait for the new album Ebo Taylor recorded this summer in Berlin for the Analog Africa label with the same Afrobeat Academy crew of musicians. Thankfully here's an extract from the Paris concert. We should podcast the highlights of this fantastic show quite soon on ParisDJs.com, and might upload some more live videos in the future so stay connected...

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Bajka's Lyrical Funk | Comments: 6

Bajka Lyrical Funk
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Bajka's Lyrical Funk
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-25

After our Malcom Catto/Heliocentrics special presenting and incredible drummer currently recording and touring, here's Bajka, a new voice we fell for, an amazing jazz/funk/soul/reggae singer from Germany who only released a few singles, but already appeared on many albums on labels such as Compost, Ninja Tune, Ubiquity, BBE, Switchstance, etc.
Much, much love from the Paris Djs Soundsystem to Bajka with this 30mn mixed retrospective from the last three years (2005-2008)....

I've been a long time Poets Of Rhythm addict (check their discography on parisdjs.com), I discovered Bajka because of tracks she recorded with the Poets backing her. I met Gerald Jazzman and Tom Strauch (Switchstance Recordings) who told me more and pointed me towards a tracks I didn't know about and stuff she had recorded recently. I was quite impressed... as much as I have been with nearly everything she recorded so far!

Not many people know about Bajka here in France, from what I've been asking around. A few say "Bonobo?" (she was on the "Days To Come" album released by Ninja Tune in 2006) but most don't even get she was on the fantastic Radio Citizen album released the same year on Ubiquity - among many other appearances...

I tried my selection to a few connoiseurs, and they all were very happy to discover a new voice they hadn't heard about, which they absolutly loved too instantly. The Billy Holiday connection is always the first to come to mind, but then there are other reactions too...

So I thought "yeah let's do that, a mix about Bajka, so that many others may know about her, that's what we're really about with all this website thing, new incredible talents, worldwide artists, 21st century jazz, soul, funk and reggae!!

[Completists might appreciate the complete track-by-track chronological discography I've assembled (see below)]

Biography :
Bajka (pronounced "Biker") is B. Pluwatsch (born December 25, 1978) is a poet and singer, currently based in Munich, Germany.

She is the daughter of J. Pluwatsch, a member of the German Krautrock band Embryo. She was born in India, and has lived in Afghanistan, Nepal, Pakistan and South Africa. She attended schools in Goa, Bangalore, Lagos, Portugal, Seattle, Durban and Cape Town.

Bajka studied music in Prague. Her relationship with Asia remains the main theme of her poetry. She has performed spoken word poetry on several projects, including Transglobal Underground's "Instinctive Traveller", Radio Citizen's "Radio City (feat. Bajka)", and South African Zulu Nation's "Bubblegum". She has also performed with Noujum Oazza and his band Urban Dervish, and for the Royal Moroccan Orchestra.

In recent years, her role has moved from poet to singer. Her voice is described as jazz/soul and she has appeared on a number of chill out and electronic dance tracks. Most recently, she appeared on several tracks on Bonobo's latest album, Days To Come.
