Le nouveau maxi de The Herbaliser vise en priorité les Djs. Qu'il s'agisse du "Nah'mean Nah'm Sayin'" au beat bien heavy et aux riffs de cuivres massifs, avec ou sans Jean Grae en grande forme quand elle est énervée comme ça (une version instrumentale du coup très toon est dispo), ou du "Gadget Funk", épique tuerie electro-bombay-disco-space invaders, c'est sur le dancefloor que ces deux extraits de l'album "Take London" prendront toute leur saveur explosive. Le remix des Platinum Pied Pipers, au swing tout chewing-gum, ponctue le single d'une ambiance psychédélique qui rend l'agressivité du rap de Madame Grae tout "mellow". Ça pouvait plutôt sembler inconcevable à priori, mais si vous confier l'affaire à des spécialistes du groove stone-washed, tout devient possible. La version instrumentale de ce remix ne doit, elle, pas être sans déplaire à des gens comme Nightmares On Wax, par exemple... - Djouls

The new EP from The Herbaliser aims at Djs first. Take a "Nah' mean Nah' m Sayin'" with a rather heavy beat and the massive brass licks, with or without Jean Grae, in great health when she's angry like that (n instrumental version that seems very toon-ish in comparison with the vocal mix is available too), or take an epic "Gadget Funk", a bomb of electro-bombay-disco-space invaders funky groove, it'll be on the dancefloor that these two pieces from their "Take London" album will bring all their explosive flavors. The Platinum Pied Pipers remix, with its chewing-gum swing, punctuates the EP with a psychedelic feeling that smoothes the anger of the rap from Mrs Grae. Mellow... mellow... mellow, would say Peter Sellers. You wouldn't have believed it possible on hearing the original version, but if you to entrust the business to some specialists of the stone-washed groove, anything can happen. The instrumental version of this remix, finally, shouldn't be displeasing to people like Nightmares One Wax, for example... - Djouls

Je reste partagé sur ce disque. D'un point de vue, quel plaisir de retrouver The Herbaliser en grande forme, toujours aussi funky (et indispensable en vinyle), de l'autre, quelle déception de voir les labels Ninja Tune et Big Dada tomber dans des travers marketing désolants, à coup de single numériques payants (une aberration: payer pour un mp3 qu'il n'est possible que d'écouter alors que l'écoute se partage et donc ne peut par définition être payante) et surtout d'édition limitées "avec un CD bonus de titres inédits". En effet comment évaluer cet album: doit-on tenir compte des 5 tracks du CD bonus où bien se dire que ceux-ci importent peu et que les meilleurs morceaux sont sur l'album simple (on ne trouve déjà plus que cette dernière édition en bacs)? Dans tous les cas c'est du gros foutage de gueule, qui augure d'un bien mauvais avenir pour Ninja Tune... qui prend là ses fans pour des vulgaires portefeuilles! Attention j'en connais un paquet de disques en édition limitée avec des bonus tracks que personne n'achète car justement l'édition limitée a atteint ses limites depuis perpète. "Je ne vais pas acheter le même disque pour le même prix, avec moins de tracks, quand même", tient d'une logique imparable.
The Herbaliser, eux (Jake Wherry & Ollie Teeba), ne peuvent être jugés coupables de cet ignoble marketing et il est temps de revenir à l'essentiel, à ce hip hop anglais fortement matiné de groovy jazz-funk, et donc à cet album sans parler de ces bonus qui n'existent déjà plus. Que les amateurs de new-wave du jour (baptisée "electroclash") passent leur chemin, comme d'habitude les Herbaliser s'adressent aux passionnés de funk (plus ou moins lancinant) avant tout. Les journaleux ne parleront que des featuring (Jean Grae, Roots Manuva, Cappo, etc.) mais les vrais connaisseurs ne rejetteront pas les morceaux instrumentaux comme du "vulgaire acid jazz" (ce qui ne veut en substance rien dire du tout), les meilleurs de l'album. Comme d'habitude je vous dis. Et ça fait dix ans que ça dure.
