"Let Me Be Your Man" features a who's who of Plainfield, New Jersey's talented musical community that included Eddie Hazel, Clarence Clemmons, Billy "bass" Nelson, Ray Davis, and many others that would pass through Tyrone Ashley's Black Top studio in the late sixties and early seventies. Culled from master tapes and that survived a house fire in the late seventies and then shelved in Mr. Campbell's home studio for close to thirty-five years, these twelve songs are a look at the raw soul and genius of a man who never stopped making music from the heart. Various - "Soul Fire - The Majestic Collection"

La scène "roots funk" actuelle est en apparence une vaste communauté de collectionneurs, de labels et de musiciens qui font re-vivre, qui re-jouent, ré-enregistrent et re-sortent un son qu'on appelait "garage funk" dans les 70's. En réalité cette communauté, principalment basée à Brooklyn, est minuscule. Tout commence en 1991 avec la première compilation du label Pure Records, monté par Aldo Rosati et Philippe Lehman (alias Bando). Sortie à 500 exemplaires, mais rassemblant uniquement des tracks de raw funk 'n'soul bien obscurs, elle génère un certain buzz, déjà international.
En 1995, après quelques compilations de raretés et de productions "à l'ancienne" distribués par Virgin France, Phillipe Lehman part à New York où il rencontre Gabe Roth, avec qui il monte Desco Records en 1997, label mais aussi collectif qui s'emploie à re-créer le son du vieux funk. Lee Fields, Sugarman et Sharon Jones sont déjà de la partie. Seulement Philippe aime son funk "super raw", limite "lo-fi" et la discorde nait entre lui et Roth qui est lui plus branché soul, cuivres rutilants. Leur amour commun pour James Brown ne suffit pas et en 2000, pendant que Gabe Roth part monter Daptones Records avec Sugarman (et le groupe The Dap-Kings), et participer au renouveau afrobeat au sein d'Antibalas, Lehman monte de son côté Soul Fire Records. Les solos jazzy ils n'en veut pas, il veut juste produire des groupes de funk minimal, qui sonneraient comme s'il avait été enregistré dans une cave, en 1969.
Jusqu'en 2003 les singles pleuvent (une trentaine en 3 ans!) et quelques albums [Calypso King & The Soul Investigators ("Soul Strike"), The Whitefield Brothers, plus connus sous le nom de Poets of Rhythm ("In The Raw"), JD & The Evil's Dynamite Band ("Explodes Across The Nation")] et compilations mémorables sortent ["Grazing In The Trash Vol.1", "Grazing In The Trash Vol.2", "Up From The Vaults Vol.1"]. Mais Philippe Lehman commence à se désinterresser de l'histoire et Leon Michels, membre du collectif de musiciens de Soul Fire, leader du groupe El Michels Affair depuis 2001 et la dissolution de son ancien groupe, les Mighty Imperials, enregistre un album sur un 8 pistes dans le garage de ses parents. Cet album fait suite au maxi "Easy Access" compilé sur "Up from The Vaults", mais Soul Fire n'existe plus et il n'y a personne pour sortir le disque.
En 2004 Michels s'associe avec Jeff Silverman, son ancien collègue de Soul Fire et partenaire au sein du El Michels Affair, et lancent le label Truth & Soul Records à Brooklyn, qui commence au printemps 2005 par clore l'histoire Soul Fire avec un double CD indispensable, "The Majestic Collection", regroupant un best-of sur le premier CD et une pelletée d'inédits sur le deuxième. Le meilleur du raw funk, de la soul vintage, du rock psyché 70's, de l'afrobeat et des breakbeats de chez Soul Fire est là. Lee Fields, les Whitefield Brothers, JD & The Evil's Dynamite Band, The Fabulous Three, Bronx River Parkway et tous les autres sont réunis pour le plus grand plaisir des amateurs de raretés funky comme à la bonne époque. L'album du El Michels Affair sort dans la foulée, le 23 Août, et on ne le trouve pas plus que cette double compile dans les bacs français. Mais que fait la police?!
