After the critical success of Everyone I Ever Met, their debut album for Counter Records, Spokes return with latest single. 3 4 5, the kind of burst of euphoric "choral indie" (Clash) that had Q proclaim that "Spokes seem destined to make waves". A building, emotional epic that began life as an "acoustic shanty", it showcases once again the unique aesthetic and wide-eyed seriousness that make Spokes stand out so far from a drab crowd. There's even a director's cut of the tune, giving full rein to the band's emotional playing and weighing in at almost seven minutes! Remixing duties are kicked off by Grasscut, who give the beat a bit of electronic snap while Marcus Odair cuts loose in Jaco Pastorius mode on the bass. Liverpool's Capac give the melody more space, cloaking it in melancholy and slatherings of sub-bass. Hiatus takes the bucolic earthiness of the original and transplanting it to dark, damp city streets.

Spokes - Everyone I Ever Met - out on Counter Records

Spokes Everyone I Ever Met
Spokes - Everyone I Ever Met
(CD/Download) Counter Records COUNTCD033/COUNTDNL033, 2011-01-17

Euphoric, heartfelt and utterly beautiful, Spokes present Everyone I Ever Met, their first album for Counter Records. Effortlessly blending together elements of shoegaze, folk, post-rock and much more, its bittersweet joyfulness will purge your system of cynicism for weeks. This is an album that moves from the chamber shoegaze pop of title track Everyone I Ever Met, through heartfelt acoustic folk on Sun It Never Comes, slowly building piano balladry (Give It Up To The Night), spinning revellry on Torn Up In Praise, rural-psych in Happy Needs Colour and beautifully poised pop on closer When I Was A Daisy, When I Was A Tree. More than anything else, what strikes you listening to Spokes is their complete sincerity, their lack of any sideways glance at what their contemporaries are doing. They make beautiful, sad, celebratory, delirious, worshipful music because that’s how they feel and, in doing so, that’s how they make you feel, too.

Euphoric, heartfelt and utterly beautfiul, Spokes present We Can Make It Out, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Everyone I Ever Met. Effortlessly blending together elements of shoegaze, folk and post-rock, its bittersweet joyfulness will purge your system of cynicism for a week. Its unique collective-choral vocals typify the energy of the forthcoming album as a whole. Ninja labelmate Yppah turns in a driving remix with a little more emphasis on the rhythm before Where Do I Sleep, an exlusive non-album track, takes the tempo down and shows just how intricately and beautifully the Spokes collective can make music. We Can Make It Out comes with a superb video by director Dan Lowe who himself has already achieved notoriety with a promo for Field Music which was nominated by RADAR for best budget video last year alongside luminaries such as Spike Jonze. This five piece based in Manchester are set to be one of the cult finds of the forthcoming year.

Various - Strike! - A Counter Records Sampler

Various - STRIKE! - A Counter Records Sampler
(CD/Download) Counter Records COUNTCD030/COUNDNL030, 2009-10-05

Back in 2006 the good people of Ninja Tune decided they wanted to start a rock label. But not any old, boring, run-of-the-mill rock label. Not a rock label pumping out the latest British indie four piece bands, or carefully crafted facsimiles of classic rawk. Not a label peopled by ironic Hoxtonites playing pisstakes of AC/DC. Not a rock label licensing in already-successful US acts and re-packaging them for the UK market. A rock label that took the same irreverent, iconoclastic, vaguely psychedelic attitude towards that type of music as the parent label had taken to various aspects of dance music. The results of this project are just now beginning to reach fruition and what better way to celebrate (and introduce listeners to a rapidly expanding roster) than with a "Pay-No-More-Than-£2.99" sampler showcasing some of the finest moments from the misfits, freaks and visionaries shaping the label's sound?
