Sound Sugar Nothing But The Truth
Soul Sugar - Nothing But The Truth
(CD) Freestyle Records FSRCD067, 2009-09-21

The Hammond Organ has provided the backbone of much popular music since it's invention 75 years ago. From gospel, blues, jazz, soul, funk, rock and reggae. The unmistakable, gritty sound of this groovy septuagenarian has been loved (and lets be honest, sometimes hated) by successive generations. It might even be suggested that the Hammond sound has nothing new to offer in the 21st century, after so many decades as the workhorse of black music... that is until the man behind Soul Sugar, Guillaume Metenier put together this new collection for Freestyle Records. Guillaume is a highly respected Parisian keyboard player whose previous credits include The Last Poets, Emilie Simon as well as being a long time collaborator of production maestros Kid Loco and Grant Phabao. Indeed, Kid Loco has worked together with Guillaume on Nothing But The Truth to produce the perfect mix of vintage sounds and styles, but with a contemporary edge.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 6)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-16

This new Molesting Laura episode is clearly aiming for the FUNK, with James, Sly & Stevie covers urging you to shake that ass!
A big thanks to Freestyle Records for releasing so many good records, sending us some promos and letting us play those in our mixes! We couldn't resist playing the heavy hitter track from the Grits album here, so full of inspiration... The Baker Brothers upcoming collection of covers is quite a treat too and we could have picked many other tracks from their 5th album for this mix. French keyboard maestro Soul Sugar is a friend and collaborator of ours but even if it wasn't the case we would still praise him for his upcoming album Nothing But The Truth which has been spinning an awful lot in our stereo this summer. Deep, soulful and groovy, it should please MANY funk and jazz lovers. Israeli funk band The Apples stormed the dancefloors earlier this year with their fantastic Snap cover, we can't wait for their new album now (the 4th one I think)... And that's only a few cos there are many more new releases to come on the Freestyle label, leading the way for the worldwide deep funk scene these days.

Who Is Molesting Laura
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Who Is Molesting Laura ? (part 4)
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-03-29

A high-octane selection of psychedelic covers, ranging from latin funk to free jazz, soul and mostly rock. The soulful heavy kind of rock you'd be expecting from us. Laura gets hit in the face. Ten times over. Don't say you don't like it like that... Props to Soul Sugar for giving us those rare 45s - when is the album coming? Props to Tobias Kirmayer and his Tramp and Perfect Toy labels too - this Boogoos single is so good we played both sides in our mixes - when is the album happening? Finally, props to Nick/Record Kicks - we haven't finished picking on this marvelous Trio Valore album yet...

Soul Sugar Biography :
Driven by keyboard player Guillaume Metenier (Seven Dub/Pro-Zak Trax, The Hunter/Maine Recordings, Grant Phabao/TIMEC...), Soul Sugar brings you a wise combination of timeless soul jazz, funk, latin and african music... with a personnal twist. Their repertoire includes reinterpretations of rare musical gems as well as original numbers. Each musician brings his own flavour for a soulful and groovy en diable result.

They have blown away the audience of the New Morning club in Paris, opening for Eumir Deodato for their first gig... They will be playing at the second Bam Bam Club party on September, 6th, along with DJ Vadim, DJ Damage, Princess Lea and Radio Salah (La Bellevilloise, Paris). More info here.

The band is actually working on a full lengh album and has just released two vinyl 7 inches. The first one is a blazing rendition of Nico Gomez classic "Ritual" on German label Mocambo, followed by "Nothing but the truth" an original psychedelic funk number, pressed in Jamaica as a limited edition on their own "SugarShack" label. The recordings are produced & mixed by Kid Loco.

Soul Sugar plans to release a few more 7" and an album - and they're looking for labels and/or distributors... Coming next on SugaShack is a new 45 with a cover of Dr Lonnie Smith.

The band is available live as a trio (drums, guitar, organ) or as a quartet or quintet (drums, guitar, organ plus sax, flute and/or percussions).
