Ben Perowsky presents Moodswing Orchestra
(Digipack CD) El Destructo Records/The Royal Potato Family, 2009-09-29

Drummer for Joan As Police Woman, Elysian Fields, 101 Crustaceans, Sex Mob, Uri Caine Trio & Baby Loves Jazz, Ben Perowsky releases a collage of sounds reflecting his diverse career. Perowsky's latest creation is a collaboration with a large selection of artists he has been working with recently, Joan Wasser, Miho Hatori, Bebel Gilberto, Elysian Fields & More. This combination of songsters and improvisors gives a unique blend of N.Y.C.'s finest cream of the crop players, under the direction and manipulation of their - normally kicking out the beats - friend at the drums.

The CD is available at the Superfly Records store in Paris.

Steven Bernstein - Diaspora Suite
(CD), Tzadik TZA-CD-8122, 2008-01-22

Info :
With groups like Sex Mob, Millennial Territory Orchestra and Diaspora Soul, Steven Bernstein is energizing the downtown scene with a passionate and indefatigable creativity. His brilliance continues with 'Diaspora Suite', the fourth installment in his Diaspora series for Tzadik and perhaps the best! Twelve original compositions exploring the Jewish tradition are brilliantly performed by a nonet of California musicians including Ben Goldberg, Peter Apfelbaum and several key players from his legendary band the Hieroglyphics. Channeling Miles Davis, Gil Evans and the Sephardic traditions of Darkness and Light, this is fabulous new Jewish music by one of the most talented and charismatic figures in the downtown scene.

Info :
When Club d'Elf released its first studio CD of its nine years of existence in 2006, it was only fitting that the band should hold its official release party at the Lizard Lounge, where it had been playing most every other Thursday since '98.

For this special evening leader Mike Rivard gathered together a heavyweight ensemble consisting of MMW keyboardist John Medeski, the dual guitars of Dave Tronzo (Daniel Lanois/Sex Mob) and Duke Levine (Shawn Colvin/Jonatha Brooke), Mister Rourke (Soulive) on turntables and samples, and original d'Elf drummer Erik Kerr.

Joining this stellar cast (with Rivard on electric and acoustic basses and the Moroccan sintir) were horn players Tom Hall, Tom Halter (Either/Orchestra) and Sam Kininger (Soulive).

Fortunately the music that evening was recorded, captured in all of it's detail on multi-track. The result is a live release that sounds like a studio release - Perhapsody, the band's seventh release on L.A.-based Kufala.

The album captures the intense energy that d'Elf bring to their live shows, which have become the stuff of legend, featuring telepathic improvisations adorning relentless grooves, played by musicians at the top of their craft.
