Steven Bernstein's Millenial Territory Orchestra - MTO Plays Sly - out on Royal Potato Family

Millenial Territory Orchestra MTO Plays Sly
Millenial Territory Orchestra - MTO Plays Sly
(CD/LP/Digital) Royal Potato Family RPF 1110, 2011-09-27

Originally commissioned by NYC River To River Fest, MTO Plays Sly is Steven Bernstein's love letter to the musical genius of Sly Stone. Growing up in the San Francisco bay area in the 60's Bernstein was first exposed to this music coming from the radio, as well as neighbor's parties. While constantly adding musical delicacies to his plate, Sly has remained a source of inspiration to Bernstein for over 30 years. Recast in the classic format of big band with organ (or more specifically Territory band with organ), these new arrangements unveil the melodic and harmonic brilliance of Sly Stone. While his lyrics range from the optimism of the 60's to the paranoia of the 70's, it is his musical skills that set him apart from his contemporaries. Full of melodic counterpoint and surprising harmonic twists, Sly's music remains timeless. The CD MTO Plays Sly, slated for a fall 2011 release, features P-Funk legend Bernie Worrell on B-3 organ and special guest Vernon Reid, alongside singers Antony, Martha Wainright, Dean Bowman, Sandra St Victor and Shilpa Ray.

Steven Bernstein A Trumpet Life

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Steven Bernstein - A Trumpet's Life pt.1

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Steven Bernstein - A Trumpet's Life pt.1 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-08-31 I distinctly remember discovering Steven Bernstein's incredible trumpet playing and arranging through one of his bands, Sex Mob and their album Din of Inequity, which included some John Medeski featurings and hard-to-believe covers of Prince, John Barry, Paul McCartney and a few others. It was the end of the 90s and France was as lost musically as it is today, with musical ignorance reigning supreme. Things have been slowly evolving thanks to independent medias such as Paris...

Interview with Steven Bernstein (english version)

Steven Bernstein by Ziga Kortinik
An Interview with Steven Bernstein / The Millenial Territory Orchestra
(Interview by Nicolas Ragonneau, for Paris DJs - summer 2011)

Trumpeter Steven Bernstein often presents himself as "one of the hardest working men in showbusiness". Beyond the ironical expression alluding to James Brown, nothing is more true. He's created a fantastic piece of music with its Diaspora quadrilogy, now a modern classic. He leads Sex Mob and The Millennial Territory Orchestra (MTO). But all this is just the tip of the iceberg, and the iceberg is huge as a planet. He's arranged, composed, produced or played with an incredible myriad of musicians in every genre possible, from Carla Bley to Elton John, from Levon Helm to John Lurie, from Medeski, Martin & Wood to Shivaree, from Antony and The Johnsons to Lee Scratch Perry...

With The Millennial Territory Orchestra, a spectacular nonet, Bernstein recreates a kind of big band that was very popular in the US in the 20s and the 30s, territory orchestras crossing the state to play in bars and dancehalls. The MTO hits the stage in Paris on September 11th (Jazz à la Villette Festival) to present their latest creation, a superb tribute to Sly And The Family Stone, followed, a few weeks later, by the release of the album MTO plays Sly (Royal Potato Family).

Interview de Steven Bernstein (version française)

Steven Bernstein MTO by Greg Aiello
Entretien avec Steven Bernstein / The Millenial Territory Orchestra
(Interview par Nicolas Ragonneau, pour Paris DJs - été 2011)

Le trompettiste Steven Bernstein se présente souvent comme "one of the hardest working men in showbusiness".

Steven Bernstein MTO Medeski Martin and Wood Jazz A La Villette
Jazz à La Villette : Medeski, Martin & Wood / Steven Bernstein & The Millennial Territory Orchestra play Sly

"Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny" ironisait Frank Zappa.

Ben Perowsky presents Moodswing Orchestra
(Digipack CD) El Destructo Records/The Royal Potato Family, 2009-09-29

Drummer for Joan As Police Woman, Elysian Fields, 101 Crustaceans, Sex Mob, Uri Caine Trio & Baby Loves Jazz, Ben Perowsky releases a collage of sounds reflecting his diverse career. Perowsky's latest creation is a collaboration with a large selection of artists he has been working with recently, Joan Wasser, Miho Hatori, Bebel Gilberto, Elysian Fields & More.
