Jonti - Twirligig

Multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer, and vocalist, Jonti, began assembling music after his departure from South Africa to Australia. Spending countless hours studying records like they were books, processing each song, this became Jonti's music school, testing his theories on a 4-track recorder. Jonti has now recorded with Mark Ronson, Santigold, Sean Lennon and the Dap-Kings, as well as producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile). For Jonti's debut album, coming this fall on Stones Throw, he went the opposite route, doing everything himself, start to finish. The album, Twiligig draws inspiration from many of Jonti's favorite artists: Madlib, Stereolab, Free Design and The Beach Boys. But Twirligig's main inspiration came from cartoonist/ filmmaker Norman Mclaren. Jonti explains, "His films are complex, but they're still fun. You can feel his enthusiasm for techniques and experimentation. I try make simple pop songs with that same enthusiasm." Although Jonti describes his music as simple, label head Peanut Butter Wolf sees it as anything but that. "I understand the pop references because his music is so catchy, but the arrangements blew me away. I couldn't figure out how the hell he did what he did. That he did it all on his own at such an early age kinda scared me. I knew right away I needed to add him to the roster." You will soon understand why Stones Throw is proud to present it's first Australian signing Jonti as a new member of the family.

Connecticut psych-soul outfit The Stepkids are three singer-songwriters destined for great things together. The Stepkids' groove is a fusion of 70s soul, funk, punk, jazz, folk, West African rhythms and modern classical. This gifted band absorb it all, then produce, engineer and record something altogether new on a reel-to-reel. This is psychedelia for the 21st century, where the focus is on the whole. This approach comes from more than a decade of musical experimentation and experience. Raised on the East Coast jazz and the R&B circuit, individual band members went on to share stages with 50 Cent and Lauryn Hill, tour internationally with indie punk band Zox, score movies and commercials, and produce solo albums. Now it's time for The Stepkids to take their time in the spotlight.

Aloe Blacc released the single of the year with I Need A Dollar. The album, Good Things, will be released next week (sept. 28th) and it's fan-tas-tic with The Expressions backing him (Dap Kings, Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, etc.)!! He'll be playing in Paris in October... a show not to miss. We'll put up a few days earlier a retrospective mix of the rapper/singer's career and here's a cool love take on I Need A Dollar as an appetizer.

Fela's music, and that of his organization inspired musicians across the global village when Afro-Beat was new and novel. This compilation focuses on the music Fela inspired – whether by fellow Nigerians recording alongside him in the early 70s, neighbors in Ghana, then-modern Colombian cumbia ensembles inspired by the man who injected a new feel into the Yoruban rhythms that formed cumbia's base, Trinidadian steel bands or the select few organizations left that have maintained Fela's fury in the new millennium. Compiler Egon has written extensive liner notes – and sourced never before seen Fela photos and other ephemera - for this project, included in the hardbound book that contains the CD and in a large-format booklet in the 4 x 10” vinyl box set.

'Sirius B' is the final installment of the three vinyl-only EPs released in conjunction with The Heliocentrics debut album 'Out There'. Featuring ex-Cannibal Ox MC Vast Aire on a new rendition of the title track - a remix of the version appearing on 'Out There' - and a new psychedelic-funk jam session “Vibration Of The Fallen Angels,” this release follows DOOM and Percee P's “Distant Star” and Guilty Simpson's “Before I Die.” This album collects the exclusive tracks from these three EPs.
