Raffertie - Mass Appeal - out on Ninja Tune

Raffertie Mass Appeal
Raffertie - Mass Appeal
(12"/Promo CD/Digital Single) Ninja Tune ZEN12306, 2012-02-03

Contextually, the Mass Appeal EP fits neatly as a natural successor to Raffertie's most recent release, the critically-acclaimed Visual Acuity EP. This time it's more about the subtlety of groove and patchworks of sonic colour, rather than out-and-out dancefloor madness. The dexterity of its musical content, like that of VA, reveals itself in the elastic manipulation of its rhythms and timbres. From the burrowing focal clarity of the epic One Track Mind to the unnatural spinning, air-like quality of Brevity, this EP has a life completely of its own. Closing track Courage Boy is littered with traces of Raffertie's own voice, but rather than giving sole focus and attention to the voice as a lead line, he focuses on the texture of the sound, like any other instrument woven and balanced within the music.

Raffertie - Visual Acuity - out on Ninja Tune

Raffertie - Visual Acuity
(12"/Promo CD/Digital Single) Ninja Tune ZEN12295/ZENCDS295P/ZENDNLS295, 2011-09-12

Benjamin Stefanski aka Raffertie releases his first EP for Ninja Tune and it instantly establishes this young producer as a name to watch in electronic music. Not for Raffertie the arid choices of "post-dubstep" (how to sell out and when?). A young music producer of exceptional confidence and rigour, Raffertie instead makes electronic music to explore the boundaries of the possible. The Visual Acuity EP displays newfound maturity whilst keeping the nuances and character that mark him out as a true individual. Both intensely cerebral and stupidly banging, Visual Acuity may fake being an aural equivalent of ADHD, but there is purpose to every twist and turn in this huge tune, the way that Raffertie pulls the music in and out of focus givng rise to its title. He will release his debut artist album on Ninja Tune in early 2012.

Daedelus - Overwhelmed feat. Bilal - out on Ninja Tune

Daedelus Overwhelmed feat Bilal
Daedelus - Overwhelmed feat. Bilal
(Digital Single) Ninja Tune ZENDNLS294, 2011-08-08

Everyone's favourite purveyor of electronic Victorian dandyism returns with a new EP of remixes from his Bespoke album. Featuring the space-soul vox of Bilal, the original is as muscular as it is intircate, a continuing tribute to the West Coast producer's way with sound. Anyone who runs wobble-bass up against drum tardiddles and the odd burst of thumping four-to-the-floor is okay by us. First up on remix duty is Star Slinger. Hotly tipped by the likes of Jamie XX and Diplo, Mr Slinger slathers the tune in galaxy-funk keys and gets his considerable groove on. New Ninja signing Raffertie harnesses warm bass to a xylophone orchestra for a mix so good it appears twice (the second time as a dub). Hot Flush-signed Sepalcure take Tailor Made and unleash its inner rave monster, with a final result that sounds like a group of choir boys tripping in 'Beefa. Innovative and clever, but also soulful and with an easy feel for the funk, Daedelus is one of the wonders of modern electronic music. Smarten up.
