The Five Corners Quintet plays the music of Kerkko Koskinen - Othello EP

The Five Corners Quintet and composer Kerkko Koskinen (see "Agatha", on Ricky-Tick Records RTCD06) recently got together to produce the score of "Othello", a hit Shakespeare play at the Finnish National Theatre in Helsinki. Ricky-Tick will release an exclusive 10" vinyl of selected tracks that were recorded for the play. The "Othello" ten-inch will navigate along the signposts set by the wealth of historically relevant soundtrack jazz around, materialising itself as high-octane 21st century dancefloor jazz with a distinct old school library/soundtrack flava. The release is strictly limited to 1000 copies.

Jukka Eskola - Buttercup / 1974

Review :
Jukka Eskola vient de la scène electro-jazz finlandaise. Il est trompettiste et on peut l'entendre au sein de nombreux groupes et enregistrements qui forment le haut du pavé: Nuspirit Helsinki, Five Corners Quintet, Teddy Rok 7, Quintessence, Jimi Tenor Band... Une pointure locale, en somme, extrait d'une scène qui se starifie peu à peu, dans l'underground international branché.
Son premier album solo doit sortir au printemps 2005 sur le label Free Agent Records, et en attendant les finlandais de Ricky-Tick sortent en apéritif un premier single de 'club jazz' plus ou moins traditionnel aux moultes soli, accompagné du saxophoniste des U-Street All Stars, ainsi que des bassiste et batteur du Five Corners Quintet. La face A, "Buttercup", au pied omniprésent, tourne un tant soit peu au "Love Boat", façon electro-jazz relou comme on en a plein les bacs ici aussi, mais la face B, très 'dancefloor latin jazz', est elle beaucoup plus aérienne, cool & swingin', et peut laisser présager d'un excellent album...

En bons spécialistes du désormais bien connu Brésil de Scandinavie, Ricky-Tick Records présentent avec ce quatrième maxi un nouveau groupe, Dalindéo, toujours finlandais, mais un sextet cette fois. On reste dans la veine du Five Corners Quntet, bossa jazz groovy, acoustique et à l'opposé de l'électro-jazz foireuse des majors (suivez mon regard), qui s'écoute et qui se danse (et inversement, voire en simultané, ou en duplex de Cognac-Jay). Une fois encore, tout ceci est joué (ce qu'on appelle 'live') et super en place (en angliche 'tight'), même si ça reste globalement un tantinet plus lounge et tranquille que le Five Corners Quintet, si on devait faire la comparaison...

The Five Corners Quintet - Different Corners EP

La recette du "Three Corners" du Five Corners Quintet à la sauce Nicola Conte (Schema Records): ajoutez des bongos bien déchainés tapissés de 'dancefloor latin jazz' sur un track terrible, très 60's, matiné de sax et de vibraphone, et vous obtenez un cocktail de samba-jazz bien détonnant, magnifiquement arrangé. Indispensable à tout bon Dj loungesque.
Le remix de "The Devil Kicks" de Sumo-On-Wheels (alias Tuomas Kallio, producteur au sein de Nuspirit Helsinki et pour Dalidéo chez Ricky-Tick) est presque insipide, comme une espèce de house baveuse à l'européenne. Bouark. Le remix du même track signé Dharmaone sera lui aussi à oublier: entre jungle, ambiances deep et drum'n'bass, il n'a pas grand intérêt, l'original lui étant supérieur dans sa catégorie, et le remix anodin si isolé dans un set d'n'b.
