Brother Ali - Truth Is

Brother Ali was my hip hop discovery of 2004, with the "Champion" EP and the "Shadows In the Sun" album from the previous year (check my review in french). A perfect combination of brilliant production by Ant (from Atmosphere) and flowing stories by the albinos rapper. Last year when I heard the roofblower "Original King", freely offered for download on various websites, I started hunting for information on a new album ("The Undisputed Truth", out April 10th), in order to get myself a new nicely sounding piece of wax and be able to play it on parisdjs.... and I stumbled upon this upcoming single (released earlier this january), available for download on Brother Ali's myspace page (for example). So my upcoming bomb was in fact "just" an exclusive b-side! What's the story there??? was I asking myself when I started my mp3 player with "Truth Is"... Bing! bang! badaboum! "but this one's even better!!! gimme more gimme more I want more!!". That's just a real bomb. In'yo face hip hop anthem for the masses. On January 9, 2007 the 12 inch was released with both tracks and a third one, "Freedom Ain't Free", more of the late-night home affairs kind. I called my hip hop store to reserve my copy.

MF Doom - Mm.. Food

"Madvillainy", sorti chez Stones Throw sous le nom de Madvillain, alias Madlib et Mf Doom, était notre album hip hop des six premiers mois de l'année 2004. Il s'accompagnait de la collection d'instrumentaux "Metal Fingers Presents... Special Herbs, Vol. 5 & 6" (chez Nature Sounds), et avait été précédé en 2003 des superbes "Vaudeville Villain" signé Viktor Vaughn (chez Sound-Ink) et "Take Me To Your Leader" signé King Geedorah (chez Big Dada). En somme, le comeback de MF Doom fin 2003/2004 a été massif.
Sans parler de ses apparitions sur les albums de Zero 7 ("Somerset"), Prince Po ("The Slickness"), Wale Oyjide (alias Science Fiction, "One Day Everything Changed"), pour ne citer que ceux-là, la deuxième moitié de l'année a été aussi dense pour MF Doom que la première. En effet l'homme masqué ne s'est pas arrêté en si bon chemin et l'été 2004 aura vu les rééditions de "KMD Instrumentals" et de "Special Herbs vol 4,5 & 6", ainsi que la sortie de "Venomous Villain" sous pseudo Viktor Vaughn. Il aura fallu attendre septembre pour (ré-)entendre les "Special Herbs, Vol. 7 & 8" (la fameuse série anthologique d'instrumentaux de MF Doom) et les "Madvillainy Instrumentals", puis, enfin, au mois de novembre, le nouvel album "Mm Food", suite annoncée du premier opus "Operation Doomsday", et son pendant collector disponibles sur quelques boutiques en ligne, "MM Leftovers", un CD exclusif de bonus tracks et de remixes.
Soit, grossièrement, l'équivalent d'au moins 10 albums en 12 mois!
Pour 2005 on attend déjà un "Live From Outer Space/Planet X" (prévu pour Mars), une réédition de KMD, "Mental Illness" (pour le printemps), un Lil' Sci & MF Doom "The John Robinson Project", un MF Doom & Danger Mouse "Danger Doom", la réédition en double CD collector de "Operation Doomsday" chez Rhymesayers, un MF Doom & The Professor "The Prof Meets The Supervillain" sur le label Nature Sounds, un MF Doom & Mr. Fantastik "FM Mood" chez Metalface Records, un MF Doom & GM Grimm "Operation: Doomsday 2 - The Day After..." pour Day By Day, et enfin un "Madvillain 2" avec Madlib!!!
Voilà pour l'impressionante discographie récente du bonhomme, qui peut aussi être vue comme une formidable opération de guerilla marketing mondiale, non sans évoquer le Dr. Doom des 4 Fantastiques... mais qui en tous cas ne peut que nous laisser dire qu'en termes de hip hop, 2004 aura été l'année MF Doom.

Rjd2 - "Since We Last Spoke"

Quand le hip hop se réapprorie la pop et le funk...
Rjd2 a bien surpris son monde après le carton de son album Moby-Dj-Shadow-esque "Deadringer" chaudement recommendé. Tous attendaient une suite encore plus radicale dans le hip hop, des hardcore drum beats à la Dj Shadow, mais... heureusement, Rjd2 a choisi de s'essayer à autre chose. D'expérimenter avec d'autres styles les techniques qu'il a éprouvé à travers les différents singles, productions et inédits issus (ou non) de son lumineux premier opus.
Alors Pop, funk, rock, jazz, hip hop ou tout ça EN MÊME TEMPS?? Et oui... en 2003 Outkast et ses influences 70's revendiquées et assimilées avaient mis tout le monde d'accord (on entendait crier "Oh! Génie!", en choeur, dans toutes les rédactions des canards à espaces publicitaires conséquents dits culturels). Pour 2004, c'est donc Rjd2 qui remet le couvert avec un album patchwork, approuvé par les laboratoires Détendu du Captain du même nom, pour une détente maximale avec un bonnet.
Et pour couper court à toutes les mauvaises langues qui prétendent que, finalement, Rjd2 n'est pas vraiment un producteur de hip hop, culture oh! combien vaste aujourd'hui, jetez aussi une oreille sur la version instrumentale de l'album "8.000.000 Stories" qu'il avait sorti l'an passé avec Blueprint sous le nom de Soul Position, entièrement produit par Rjd2, et carrément funky-old-school-abstract-hip-hop comme on en fait jamais assez...

Brother Ali - "Champion EP" / "Shadow On The Sun"
(Rhymesayers, 2003/2004)

"Shadows In The Sun" date en fait de 2003, mais quand il s'agit de l'album hip hop underground de l'année (dixit l'excellent webzine Boom Bap), ça mérite qu'on revienne dessus, même en retard. Et en effet le rappeur afro-américain musulman et albinos Brother Ali mérite bien là son sacre: aucun album de hip hop pas old school de l'an passé ne semble lui arriver à la cheville. La production, brillante et originale, signée Ant, moitié du duo Atmosphere, fait claquer ses beats avec fraîcheur et nostalgie sur des arrangements soul-jazz 70's, mais c'est surtout l'alchimie de ces beats avec le flow funky et les histoires passionantes de Brother Ali qui font qu'on peut écouter cet album en boucle.
Alors, pour patienter jusqu'au nouvel album (prévu pour septembre 2004?), pour ceux qui auront déjà réussi à user leur "Shadows In The sun", ou pour ceux qui sont largement passés à côté, voici un "Champion EP" de 9 titres et 40 minutes (il n'y a que dans le hip hop ou un CD de 40 minutes s'appelle un "EP"!) tout aussi réussi. Ne serait-ce que pour la surprenante réinterprétation reggae dub de "Champion", il se fait tout aussi indispensable que l'album précité...
