Selah Sue - Crazy Vibes (Grant Phabao Remix)
Tuesday 26 July 2011, 19:16 1
22 years-old Selah Sue (real name Sanne Putseys) is a Belgian musician and songwriter you might have heard about already. She was featured on Cee-Lo's latest LP The Lady Killer, and released in march this year her first album, Selah Sue. She listened to a lot of ragga and reggae in high school and, together with soul, hip hop and some slower tunes, the style has become an essential part of her repertoire. She even wrote two ragga songs herself (Raggamuffin and Fyah Fyah)... She gets here the unique Grant Phabao Jamaican treatment, with this hip hop-ish roots reggae remix of Crazy Vibes....

Lotek - International Rudeboy
(CD/LP/Download) First Word Records FW60, 2011-07-25
The International Rudeboy is back! Since leaving home at the age of 15 to become a sound engineer, Wayne 'Lotek' Bennett has been on a quest to hone his interpretation of the sounds that he grew up with - a journey that has taken him to all corners of the globe. From festivals in Czech Republic to clubs in Japan and all points in between Lotek has forged his own path as a ska revivalist, culminating in his debut album on First Word, International Rudeboy. Whilst some may know Lotek from his early hip hop with Roots Manuva, (both as a producer and as musical director of his now legendary live show), his Lotek Hifi project on Big Dada or even his recent work as the creative force behind the acoustic soul of Speech Debelle's Mercury Prize winning album, it is reggae music that has always been the foundation of his sound.

Steve Mason & Dennis Bovell - Ghosts Outside
(CD/LP/Digital) Double Six/Domino Record Co., 2011-07-25
Former Beta Band man Steve Mason has joined forces with reggae musician and producer Dennis Bovell. The pair have announced the release of an album on 25 July, a radical 'dub' reinterpretation of Steve Mason's Boys Outside' LP, which was released last year. A collaborative effort, Ghosts Outside was recorded in early 2011 at Livingston Studios in North London with Dennis Bovell. Using the original tracks as a basis, with Steve's guidance Dennis added additional instrumentation; the tracks were later given the classic 'Bovell production' treatment. Steve met Dennis at a Black History month in Hackney. Dennis is a renowned and much respected artist-producer, central in the development of British reggae from the 1970s onwards. He gained renown with his own group, Matumbi and also worked with the likes of Linton Kwesi Johnson, I-Roy and Janet Kay. He also produced a wide diversity of bands including The Pop Group, Orange Juice and The Slits. He recently featured heavily in the BBC4 Reggae Britannia documentary.

Palov feat. Lady Faye - Troubles
(Digital Single) Cast-A-Blast Digicab208, 2011-07-14
Palov is stepping to the forefront as an artist in his own right. His debut solo release What's That made it's way in radio, DJ play lists and compilations worldwide last year, revealing a top notch musicianship with guitarist and songwriter Angelos Angelides. This time the two of them are meeting vocalist Faye and deliver a soulful vibrant reggae tune with a tripped out jazz guitar solo, upright bass, distinct melodies and sweet emotion-packed lead vocals and harmonies. Drum'n'Bass and Dub fans will certainly love the jungle version by Dublin's hardest working producers Dirty Dubsters, coming with their signature sound and the dub excursions suggested by the talents of Jazz K Lipa (Pepe le Moko , Resense).

Tribute To Gil Scott-Heron - A Place For You (Grant Phabao Remix)
Thursday 16 June 2011, 14:51 1
Gil Scott-Heron left us at the end of May. His bluesology, black American music and message marked us forever. Sandra Nkaké and Jî Drû have written and recorded in one night an homage piece, A Place For You!. Joined by a bunch of friends who felt as much concerned as they were, on a riff from Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, they sing a chorus tribute to Scott-Heron and borrow a text extracted from I Think I'll Call It Morning. The original track was mixed by Blackjoy, with remixes from Mark de Clive-Lowe, Doctor L, Loik Dury, Eric Legnini, Jeff Sharel feat. Karl The Voice, DJ Oil or Vadim...

Various - David Rodigan's Dubwize Shower
(CD/2xLP/Digital) Barely Breaking Even Records BB170CCD/BBE170CLP/BBE170CDG, 2011-06-14
I read an interesting interview from famous UK reggae DJ David Rodigan, where he was stating that Jamaican music is not Jamaican anymore. "They’ve forgotten what Jamaica is famous for; the structure and melodic output of reggae... It’s empty, not mixed properly or mastered. There’s no substance, just a waste of time downloading them." Among the new stuff he rates, Konshens, Etana, Tarrus Riley, Alborosie and Romain Virgo... The man should get the news, there's a studio in Paris where Jamaican veterans are coming to record some new stuff he would be hunting for!!
Meanwhile, David Rodigan keeps on turning is ears on the best stuff to come and to have been coming from the island, and he's selected here 20 glorious dub excursions from the master engineers in Jamaica, King Tubby, Errol T. and Sylvan Morris alongside some new additions from Alborosie and Da Grynch. Summer is upon us already!Hollie Cook - out on Mr Bongo

The summer of 2011 welcomes the self titled debut album by Hollie Cook, released 6th June on Mr Bongo Recordings. Hollie's self-coined 'Tropical pop' sound stems from her passion for reggae singers Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon combined with classic 60s girl groups. The album is produced by friend and collaborator Mike Pelanconi, better known as Prince Fatty. Debut single That Very Night is currently making waves across radio, with Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 2/6 Music), Rob Da Bank (Radio 1), John Kennedy (XFM) and David Rodigan (Kiss) among her many supporters. The album includes a cover of Shangri-La's' (Remember) Walkin' In The Sand, transformed from a dark emotive song to one filled with a flavour of hope. The talents of Omar, Dennis Bovell, George Decker of The Pioneers, Style Scott and Horseman also feature across the album.

Versus - Mr Blue (Grant Phabao Remix)
Friday 20 May 2011, 15:30
Our good ol' friend and doublebass player Lawkyz has just launched a new project, Versus, between hip hop, jazz, funk and blaxploitation. The band is playful and fun, sounding like early stuff from The Herbaliser with a distinguished French taste for Jazz musings. Their album will be out january 2012. Meanwhile, they've asked many of their friends for remixes and the n°1 reggae producer worldwide, Grant Phabao, who had already worked with Lawkyz in the past on some still unreleased tracks with Amayo from Antibalas, agreed to put his magic hands on the Mr Blue piece. The result is astounding...
