Review :
The french electro-jazz scene is bursting with talents, and after heavy support of our sax favorite Gregsky, we couldn't not pass the message on the second UHT° album, "Ghost Forest". This hip-hop-electro-jazz quartet is already mature, entirely distanced from the major-companies cheap-sounding wanabee-electro-jazz pop/house shit... ∧ if you're reading this site regularly, exactly up to your taste!
UHT° is Dj ClicK (programming, percussion, keyboards, turntables, theremin, vocals), Niño Korta (turntables, kutz), Lawkyz (double bass, electric bass) and Cat's Eyes (flute, bansuri, keyboards). Yes, that's the same Lawkyz who's doing a "History Of Double Bass" series of mixes for brotherly podcasts website ParisDJs.com, and who did a complete Luke Vibert discography on Ninja Tune-obsessed blog Ninja-Obsession.net (with all his album reviewed!). But don't think this is just a supporting-of-friends affair, cos this album really does the trick.
Think Kid Koala, Wagon Christ and Fingathing-infused Ninja Tune stylings, think Herbie Hancock tribute (the 5th track is directly inspired by "Rockit"), think Bobby Humphrey flute solos, think 60's french movie scores... Enjoy the neat featurings, with the supa-funky-old-school flow of One Self's Blu Rum 13 (on "Bluenvironment"), and the we-thought-he-was-dead reappearance of scratchmaster Dj Tos, adding brazilian vocals (!) to "Bama Em Ação". Add some absurd-old-fashioned vocal samples in the Captain Détendu tradition and you got there an album you'll NEED to find.

DJ Vadim returns with a whole new project and, yes, it could be his best work yet. One Self is a group comprised of DJ Vadim, and MCs Blu Rum 13 (based in the U.S) and up-and-coming female MC Yarah Bravo. Together, unexpectedly, they make a kind of sparse, utterly contemporary soul music. 'Be Your Own' is the first single from forthcoming debut album 'Children Of Possibility' (out June 6th). Vadim hooks up a haunting, spare and rhythmically driving indo-arabic beat whilst Blu Rum and Yarah trade lines and twist their voices round one another's, creating something between a love song and a battle of the sexes - just about as subtle as hip-hop lyrics can get.
