Emika - Count Backwards - out on Ninja Tune

(12"/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN12263/ZENDNLS263, 2011-04-11

Emika's latest single Count Backwards is released on Ninja Tune on 18 April on 12" vinyl and download. Remixes come from British dubstep producers Kryptic Minds who have released several albums, their latest, Lost All Faith, on their own Defcom Records last year. Marcel Dettmann transforms the original song into a deep Techno meditation for which Emika re-sang the vocals. Dettmann is a producer and resident DJ resident at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. Emika explains: "Count Backwards is the story of an over-fed yet undernourished soul in search of a little peace and quiet. In times of stress, you can count your date of birth backwards or spell your birth month backwards and the logical side of the mind is kicked into action, resulting in a feeling of calm. Counting backwards is a coping mechanism in overwhelming moments of panic."

The Qemists - Take It Back featuring Enter Shikari - out on Ninja Tune

The Qemists - Take It Back featuring Enter Shikari
(promo CD/Download) Ninja Tune ZENCD164P/ZENDNL164, 2011-04-04

Take It Back is the latest single to be taken from The Qemist's sophomore album Spirit In The System, and sees the Brighton-based trio join forces with fellow dance/rock music hybridisers Enter Shikari, with cataclysmic results. The end of 2010 maintained momentum for both bands with Enter Shikari going straight to Number One in the UK rock charts with their single Destablize, while the dubstep VIP of The Qemists' Renegade was battered by many of the world's primary dubstep DJs. After The Qemists supported Enter Shikari on their 2009 European tour, the union of the two bands in the studio was a natural development, with both sharing a vision of fusing bass-heavy dance music with rock. Take It Back is the result of their first collaboration. With an incredible post-apocalyptic, dystopian video to accompany the track, and the backing of a remix from current D&B darlings The Prototypes, alongside a VIP version of Take It Back and dubstep floor-slayer Dirty Words, The Qemists are kicking of 2011 with frightening intent ahead off a world-wide tour that will take the trio's unique sound everywhere from Japan to Finland, Eastern Europe and, of course, the UK.

(promo CD/Digital) Ninja Tune ZENCDS281P/ZENDNLS281, 2011-03-21
(12") Ninja Tune ZEN12281, 2011-04-04

After a busy couple of years of touring, remixing and releasing singles and EPs with Brainfeeder, All City, Magical Properties (the Daedelus home-imprint), Alpha Pup, Warp and Stones Throw, Alfred Darlington aka Daedelus returns with his new full length album on Ninja Tune, Bespoke. The first single from the album is, suitably, "Tailor-Made," both titles summing up the unique and eccentric vision of a musical artist as obsessed with the clothing of the Victorian era as he is with the music of the future. Tailor-Made is a delicious amalgam of wiggly keyboard lines, four-to-the-floor kicks, drum box flourishes and woozy, beautiful vox from Milosh. It builds and builds into a frenzied, ecstatic Daedelesque finale which will have you itching for the full album. Remix duties are taken care of by highly-rated fellow LA-er Jennifer Lee aka TOKiMONSTA. She gives it some of the LA Beat Scene lope while sneaking it a double-time shuffle all her own. The final single will feature a remix by Floating Points and some instrumental versions.

Toddla T - Cherry Picking feat. Roisin Murphy - out on Ninja Tune

Toddla T Cherry Picking
Toddla T - Cherry Picking
(12") Ninja Tune RSD11toddla, 2011-03-16

Toddla T returns for 2011 with a vinyl only offering as part of Record Store Day on April 16. Featuring the dulcet tones of his steel city sister in arms, Roisin Murphy, it's a brilliantly packaged limited re-introduction to our boy T. Since the release of his debut album Skanky Skanky in 2009, Toddla has been working non stop on the follow up Watch Me Dance (Aug 2011) writing and recording in Sheffield, London and Jamaica, slotting in sessions between his mind-numbing DJ schedule and Radio 1 DJ slots. Cherry Picking sets the tone for the new album just at the right pitch, leaving ample room for you to brace yourselves for the first single proper Take It Back (feat. Shola Ama) set for release on May 23. In ensuring Watch Me Dance was everything Toddla envisaged it could be he's carefully selected an impressive line up of friends, peers and musical icons to guest vocal, co-produce, remix, co-write with him on the album. Names including previous collaborator Roots Manuva, fellow DJ, producer and remixer Skream, Ms Dynamite, Ross Orton, Wayne Marshall, Donaeo and of course Roisin Murphy and Shola Ama. But more on that to come - for now, whet your aural appetites with this first taste of what the summer of 2011is destined to sound like - T Willy style.

Wagon Christ - Toomorrow - out on Ninja Tune

Wagon Christ Toomorrow
Wagon Christ - Toomorrow
(2LP/CD/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN163/ZENCD163/ZENDNL163, 2011-03-14

The one and only Luke Vibert returns to the fray under his most celebrated and wondrous moniker, Wagon Christ (to clarify, he is not under a wagon. Nor on one. Nor is he, strictly speaking, Christ, though we can't rule out his messianic status). The king of stoned exotica, ridiculous vocal samples, toothsome puns, swinging rhythm and the psychedelic groove, Vibert has never been one to take himself too seriously, but his music continues to delight.

With recent releases on both Planet Mu and Rephlex, Luke Vibert remains one of the key players in the scene that developed out of Cornwall and the West Country in the mid-nineties. Toomorrow is a funny, clever, swinging, moving reminder of why.

Stateless - Matilda - out on Ninja Tune

Stateless Matilda
Stateless - Matilda
(CD/LP/Download) Ninja Tune ZENCD157/ZEN157/ZENDNL157, 2011-02-21

It's easy to talk about the "epic" quality of this or that record, its "cinematic" feel. And how many artists have you heard say, as Chris James, lead singer of Stateless, does that "I wanted the record to be like a journey"? But sometimes it's true. Sometimes it just is true. Sometimes you have to hold up your hands and admit it. Welcome to Matilda, then, an eleven track, fifty minute follow-up to 2007's eponymous debut, which takes all of those easy words and makes something concrete out of them. Working with Bjork producer/programmer Damian Taylor, Matilda ties together classic songwriting with rhythmic drive, slatherings of sub-bass and enough electronic interference to satisfy the most anal of glitch-nerds. The results are spectacular...

The Qemists Soundsystem
The Qemists - Soundsystem
(promo mix CD/Download) Ninja Tune ZENCD167P/ZENDNL167, 2011-02-14

After the genre-smashing, rock-infused masterpiece that was Spirit In The System, the ultimate filthy dance act return to their electronic roots, and deliver a mix album to crush all mix albums. Comprised of original, exclusive tracks (including 'Be Electric', 'The Demand' and 'Lifeline'), highly sought-after remixes (think Riskotheque, Reso and Spor to name a few), and the Qemists trademark VIPs, this forty minute seamless mix is everything you would expect from producers who are as much at home in the DJ booth as they are behind their instruments live on stage. You also might spot a few guest vocals in there, including Grime superstar Wiley, and D'n'B Legend Jenna G. The only problem that remains is choosing which of these two exceptional albums to listen to first...

Stateless - Assassinations - out on Ninja Tune

Stateless Assassinations
Stateless - Assassinations
(Download) Ninja Tune ZENDNLS279, 2011-02-14

Stateless return with the second single from their forthcoming album, Matilda, with the aid of Bjork producer Damian Taylor. The result on Assassinations is a tune which sounds like Timbaland producing Pink Floyd - big, bold and beautfiul, the kind of sound the Klaxons were searching for on their second album and never quite found. The first remix comes from Jim Coles aka Om Unit, who gives the vocals a little more room to breathe and indulges us in some slowed-down, widescreen house, a kind of rave through the k-hole. NYC’s Falty DL (Drew Lustman to his mum), meanwhile, deconstructs the tune into a fractured, atmospheric mix of unfeasible bass, Pinky and Perky torture and latinate riddim business. Assassinations shows Stateless to be a band at the height of their powers.

Andreya Triana - Far Closer
(Download) Ninja Tune ZENDNLS264, 2011-02-07

Andreya Triana returns with one of the standout tracks from her critically acclaimed debut album, Lost Where I Belong. Far Closer combines Triana's beautiful, slowburn vocal and intelligent lyrics with one of Bonobo's key productions. Coming on like a more melancholy, reined in take on the Motown blueprint, this is a tune with an uplifitng, memorable chorus and no shortage of that rare commodity - genuine soul. Co-written with Fink, running away from love has never been made to sound more attractive. With remixes from Mr Scruff, Tokimonsta and a live version of the tune, recorded with Fink and Bonobo playing guitar and bass respectively.
