There's a particularity to our Bag of Goodies mixes this year. The selection is only made up of records and music either sent to us by labels and artists, or which we actually bought in record stores in the recent weeks. It'll be hard for us to be more supportive and current than that. We usually gather for a listening session with a few of our favorite new tracks in the bag, and try to hit the decks instantly in order for the mix to be spontaneous. EN 1999, George M. annonçait dans les pages du djouls.com la sortie du premier album solo de Mos Def, "Black on both sides": un "résultat est plus roots que jamais", du "hip hop originel", "passant par tout les visages de la musique noire".
5 ans plus tard Mos Def est devenu une star du hop hop underground, un poète de son époque. Il sort son deuxième album et la grande majorité des critiques essaie de le descendre, sous prétexte de patchwork kaléidoscopique pas au niveau du premier opus. Ne vous fiez pas à cette bande d'oreilles en carton!
Hip-hop, rock, blues, jazz et soul y fusionnent en évoquant George Clinton, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, Jimi Hendrix, Gil Scott Heron, BB King, Curtis Mayfield et Barry White.
"The New Danger" est tout simplement la réponse de 2004 au "The Love Below/Speakerboxxx" d'Outkast, "chef d'oeuvre psychédélique et bombe hip hop de 2003" (dixit moi-même dans le best of d'alors), sauf qu'au lieu de tenir sur 2 CDs, cette fois-ci vous n'aurez qu'un seul disque, à écouter en "repeat" à n'importe quel moment de la journée.
La tuerie hip hop et au-delà de l'année.

Vive les super-groupes de hip hop underground de la côte Est! "Wylin' Out" réunit tout de même Mos Def (de New York) et le rappeur Diverse (de Chicago), autour de beats concotés par Scott Herren, alias Prefuse 73 (d'Atlanta). Si ce n'est pas de la hype, ça... je ne m'y connais pas! C'est vraiment un super track de hip hop, pour le flow, les lyrics ou tout simplement les splendides beats fournis par Prefuse 73, mais on sent un peu trop le travail à distance (par email) et pas assez la réelle rencontre d'artistes. Un bien beau collage, cela dit.
