Wicked Knee are Steven Bernstein on trumpets, Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Marcus Rojas on tuba, and Billy Martin from Medeski Martin & Wood on drums and percussion, with the help of DJ Olive (who plays turntable on Remington 411. Their first EP, Wicked Knee, was recorded and mixed by Scotty Hard who mixed may fantastic MMW albums and not only... They've played in bands such as John Lurie's Lounge Lizards, Sex Mob, Medeski Martin & Wood, Spanish Fly, The Jazz Passengers and many others. They call their music "Ragtime Funk" and it's quite obvious why on the first notes of this EP, which gathers some authentic brass band spirit, downtown cinematic NY vibes and the deep groove of Billy Martin's unique drumplay. You need this.

I checked this Japanese only release from Medeski Martin & Wood at a record store this morning. I was wondering what it was. The artwork and title linked it to the recent Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set, released by Indirecto Records in the US at the end of 2009, but since I don't read Japanese I couldn't say if there was any new track in there or not. Back home I did a bit of web search and managed to get the full info which you'll find in the rest of the entry. Sadly this is only a double CD compilation from the box set, with a selection of tracks from the various audio CDs to be found in the box set. No exclusive track. You hungry music collectors don't have to dig for this one (but the boxset is still a must have!).

Medeski Martin & Wood culminate their 2-year Radiolarians Series with a comprehensive box set of material entitled Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set, released by Indirecto Records. The box set includes: Radiolarians I, II and III complete with bonus tracks, a 10 track disc of remixed music, a previously unreleased 70-minute live album, a double vinyl LP set consisting of highlights from the three Radiolarians albums, plus a DVD feature film entitled Fly In A Bottle directed by Billy Martin. All of the material contained in the box was written and performed by MMW specifically for The Radiolarians Series.

Restlessly inventive improvising trio Medeski Martin & Wood are set to release the third installment of The Radiolarian Series on August 4th, 2009. Recorded in December 2008, Radiolarians III perfectly sums up the themes, motifs and styles laid out in the previous two Radiolarians records. There is an epic feel at play here, as the choruses rise and swell out of low-lying grooves and polyrhythms. Highlights include the passionate and gritty traditional Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down, the anthemic Undone, and the Latin-influenced acoustic opener Chantes Des Femmes. Overall, Radiolarians III finds the trio doing what they do best, melding genres and improvising. What results, is maybe the strongest and most cohesive album of the entire Radiolarians Series.
