Marijata - This Is Marijata - out on Academy LPs

Marijata
Marijata - This Is Marijata
(LP) Academy LPs ALP 006, 2011-03-08

The core trio of the Ghanaian funk band Marijata got its start as the Sweet Beans - a highlife combo sponsored by the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board. Hard-hitting, hair-rising, Afro-fuzz from Ghana, This is Marijata is the toughest and most sought-after African Funk records of them all! Recorded in 1976, this album is the standard by which all other Afro-Funk albums are measured - it's power, vitality and rawness have been emulated, but never equaled. Fully licensed and lovingly remastered, the Academy LPs/Voodoo Funk Re-issue presens This Is Marijata in all it rough-hewn glory.
(PS Academy LPs will release a second Marijata album soon, and a CD containing both albums)

Ebo Taylor - Love And Death - out on Strut Records

Ebo Taylor Love And Death
Ebo Taylor - Love And Death
(CD/2xLP/Digital) Strut/K7 Strut073CD/LP, 2010-10-25

Ebo Taylor's Love And Death will be released in CD / 2LP / digital formats. He will be touring with Afrobeat Academy beginning in December 2010. Interest in Ebo Taylor's music has grown in recent years with some incredible live shows in Paris and Berlin in 2009, a series of Ghanaian compilations on Soundway Records and Analog Africa and an unexpected sample as Usher lifted a riff from Heaven for his hit with Ludacris, She Don't Know. A new Ebo Taylor album was a natural progression. For new album, I wanted to advance the cause of Afrobeat music. Fela started it and we shouldn't just abandon it. We should push it so it is a standard form of music. The result is a firing new set backed by Afrobeat Academy, a Berlin-based collective featuring members of Poets Of Rhythm, Kabu Kabu (Jimi Tenor collaborators) and Ghanaian legends Marijata. Tracks include new versions of Taylor classics Victory and Love And Death and a selection of new compositions including Kwame, celebrating Ghana's late, lamented leader Kwame Nkrumah.

Born in 1951 in Kumasi, Ghana, the highlife vocalist, Pat Thomas, made his name with his band the Sweet Beans. He began his carreer in 1969 with the Broadway Dance Band, leaving a year later to join the Uhuru Dance Band. Then he played with Ebo Taylor's Blue Monks and finally formed the Sweet Beans in 1973. Various - Afro-Beat Airways
West African Shock Waves – Ghana & Togo 1972-1979
(CD/2xLP) Analog Africa n°8, 2010-08-03

Organ-driven Afro-beat, cosmic Afro-funk and raw, psychedelic boogie... just some of the flavours to be found on this highly danceable compilation by Samy Ben Redjeb, founder of Analog Africa. No effort has been spared! To document these 15 irresistible tracks and the music scene from the'70s, Samy crisscrossed the lengths of Ghana and Togo in search of the producers and artists – or their relatives. In the process he recorded a dozen interviews, scanned 90 pictures and transferred 120 master tapes. All the evidence can be seen in the 44-page full colour booklet accompanying these 75 minutes of heavy West African sounds. Afro-Beat Airway showcases an amazing diversity of local rhythms spiced with Afro-American funk, soul and jazz.

Ghana Soundz - Afro-beat, Funk & Fusion In 70's Ghana
(Soundway 2002) Selected by Miles Cleret

Note : **** (Havanito)
