Tommy Guerrero - "Getting It Together (featuring Lyrics Born)"
Tommy Guerrero - "Rusty Gears, Lonely Years"

Tommy Guerrero fait plutôt habituellement dans le laidback. Le blues soul-funk downtempo-isant. "Rusty Gears, Lonely Years", extrait du "Jukin Collector EP" de 2001 en est un bon exemple. L'album sorti l'an passé, "Soul Food Taqueria", est de la même veine, relaxante et hypnotisante comme un trip au bord de l'eau, mais cette fois l'extrait présenté ("Getting It Together") n'en est peut-être pas le meilleur exemple. En effet Lyrics Born de la troupe Quannum (Dj Shadow & co.) vient en guest chanter et rapper sur ce morceau à dominance jazz débordant de breakbeats funk et disons plutôt qu'il s'agit du single MP3 pour déclancher l'acte d'achat... Heureusement au final ça fait deux bonnes raisons de découvrir l'atmosphère psychedelic soul jazz 70's de la musique de Tommy guerrero.

Quannum Presents Solesides Greatests Bumps

Alors que l'univers Quannum n'en finit pas de s'étendre, il est important de rappeler aux non-initiés comment tout a débuté. Sachez d'abord que le label s'appelle Quannum Projects, qu'il a été créé en 1997 par les artistes du label, qui forment le collectif Quannum. Ce nom est un jeu de mot avec Quantum. Quannum regroupe: Lyrics Born, Lateef the truth Speaker (qui à eux deux forment Latyrx), Chief Xcel et Gift the Gab (Blackalicious) et Dj Shadow. Plus leur entourage proche dont Jojo Velarde (extra-ordinaire chanteuse), Maroons (Chief Xcel et Lateef), Erin Anova et Lifesavas de Portland et Poets of Rhythm.
Quannum est né des cendres de Solesides, un label lancé depuis les couloirs de KDVS, la radio sponsorisée par l'Université de Californie à Davis. Développé en 1991-92 par les mêmes artistes ainsi que leur mentor Jeff Chang, la première sortie en 1993 était "Send Them" de Asia Born (=Lyrics Born), puis "Entropy" de Dj Shadow, deux beaux exemples des expérimentations qui allaient suivre. Ces disques ont entre autre été samplés par Chemical Brothers, Black Moon et Fatboy Slim. Blackalicious a lancé la seconde salve avec le EP "Melodica" licencié sur le jeune Mo'Wax en 94. Le style superbe de Gift of Gab, associé aux musiques de Chief Xcel et Shadow a valu à Solesides son premier tube "Swan Lake". 1995 a vu l'avènement de la seconde génération avec le titre "Latyrx" en face B du premier maxi de Lateef, avec Lyrics Born en invité: ce duo est vite devenu le plus populaire de chez Solesides/Quannum. Leur premier album en 1996 reste un des plus vendus du label. Encore quelques singles et EP avant que le label rentre dans la cour des grands.
Avec le temps l'idéologie du collectif a changé: ce qui au début n'était qu'un moyen cool de se faire remarquer et de représenter le Hip Hop est devenu plus important, les buts sont maintenant plus larges, les goûts plus variés. "Il nous fallait un cri de ralliement, un projet commun à tous les artistes". Le premier LP de chez Quannum intitulé "Quannum Spectrum" est le résultat de cette collaboration avec Jurassic 5, Divine Styler, Souls of Mischief, El P, et Dan the Automator. Six ans après leur EP Blackalicious ont sorti un premier album brillant "NIA", à la suite du déjà classique "A-G EP".
"Greatest Bumps" est un résumé de cette épopée, avec des inédits et des raretés du label nord californien, en attendant les sorties de Poets Of Rhythm et Lyrics Born sur Quannum, distribution Ninja Tune!!
