Laura Vane and the Vipertones
Laura Vane & The Vipertones
(CD/LP) Socialbeats/Unique Records UNIQ160-2/UNIQ160-1, 2009-08-24

Really one of the best deep funk albums I've heard recently! And I love Laura Vane's voice... Listen to the Laura Vane mix I've cooked to check by yourself. PS She's not the same Laura as the one we're molesting monthly ;-) (Djouls)

Drawn together from both sides of the North Sea, Laura Vane & The Vipertones consists of musicians from various Dutch & UK projects pooling their respective skills for this funk & soul group. From Holland, and more precisely Dordrecht in the south east of the country, Phil Martin & Ton Van Der Kolk - also known as producers duo AIFF - provide their instrumental talents developing the grooves and beats fired over the internet from the northern UK town of Burnley by Jonathan 'Diesler' Radford. Finally, and having cut it amongst the big boys working with The Streets, Gnarls Barkley & MJ Cole amongst others, Laura Vane, hailing from Brighton on the south coast of the UK, provides the sweet vocals and imaginative lyrics to the project. (2xCD/Double vinyl with Double CD) Tru Thoughts TRUCD194/TRULP194, 2009-06-08

Tru Thoughts' first Shapes compilation of 2009 is a rather massive 29 track double CD collection, featuring a selection of current highlights, remixes and exclusive tracks from acts including Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, Bonobo, Belleruche, The Bamboos, Nostalgia 77 Sessions featuring Keith and Julie Tippett, Kinny, Stonephace and all the excellent artists currently signed to the roster, of which there are far too many to mention in one coherent sentence. Suffice to say, over the two discs - arranged into 'home listening' and 'DJ' modes - there is plenty of great music for your ears and dancefloors, from minimal soul through downtempo beats and lush jazzy vocal tracks to floor-filling basslines.
