In 1976, soul/rock/funk singer and sex symbol Betty Davis headed down to Bogulsa, Louisana's famed Studio in the Country to record what would have been her fourth album, Crashin' From Passion. Along with her North Carolina band, Davis had two months to work on her most ambitious album yet with its mix of her signature, salacious seductions, starkly autobiographical songs about the price of fame and even an anti-disco screed. However, the album - described by the musicians who played on it as Davis' best recording ever - was shelved for reasons unclear and with Davis' star on the wane, the project was subsequently lost to collective memory. However, it was recently rediscovered and is being prepped for re-release.

Back in 1971, Coming From Reality was Rodriguez's last gasp, the follow-up to Cold Fact and the final album he was allowed to record for the Sussex label. Unearthed, once again, by Light In The Attic records, it's another treat for fans new and old, designed - at the time - as Rodriguez's vision of a perfect pop album. The CD release includes deluxe booklet and 3 bonus tracks, recorded circa '72 w/ Mike Theodore & Dennis Coffey, and the LP features old-school tip on jackets, liner notes, and 180 gram vinyl, plus bonus 7" of the previously unreleased cuts Can't Get Away and Street Boy.

Special Light In The Attic Records

En 2001 Light In The Attic se lance à Seattle en tant que label, et surtout producteur de concerts pour Saul Williams, Royksopp, Dj Spinna, Interpol, Ladytron, Clinic et Prefuse 73. Dans la foulée, l'activité de label démarre avec des productions et un packaging tous deux "top of the class" (sans revenir sur la qualité du remastering, checkez les éditions vinyles 180g!). L'artistique n'est pas en reste non plus avec une sélection de rééditions et de nouveautés triées sur le volet, entre hip hop (Last Poets, Sharshooters), funk (Bernard Purdie, B.O. de "Gorge Profonde", compile de funk 70's de Seattle...), psychédéique pop-folk 60's et ses remixes à la sauce branchée (The Free Design). Leur site internet propose une sélection de mp3 à se télécharger d'urgence que nous ne saurions trop vous conseiller...

L'histoire du funk continue de s'écrire sans cesse... grâce aux fouineurs les plus invétérés qui partent les uns après les autres à la quête de graals sous forme de rares 45 tours gorgés de grooves suaves. Light In The Attic suivent eux aussi ce chemin initiatique et nous proposent ici des raretés fin-60 début-70 de chez eux: Seattle... ville d'origine de Jimi (Hendrix) et de Ray (Charles), que je salue au passage.
En extrait gratuit nous est proposé un "Bold Soul Sister, Bold Soul Brother" signé Black On White Affair (!), bien raw comme il se doit, à base d'orgue Hammond C3, en forme de cracker à s'enfiler dans le gosier avant de tenter de se choper la compile entière, absolument.
