Lucas Santtana Sem Nostalgia
Lucas Santtana - Sem Nostalgia
(CD/Download) Mais Um Disco, 2011-08-29

Brazilian singer/guitarist Lucas Santtana is a kind of 21st Century Tom Zé meets Seu Jorge meets Rodrigo Y Gabriela meets El Guincho. He blends together Brazilian guitar, dub, acoustic samba, electronica, bossa and quirky samples, with an innovative & laid-back approach to things... The sunshine experimental spirit of the Tropicalia movement is gloriously revived by what is already one of the latin music albums of the year! The album is released on the Mais Um Discos label, a new UK based Brazilian label which might get his guest invitation on Paris DJs soon...

Afrolicious - Dub For Mali EP - out on ESL Music

Afrolicious Dub For Mali
Afrolicious - Dub For Mali EP
(Digital Single) Eighteen Street Lounge Music ESL187, 2011-08-16

Afrolicious are pleased to announce their debut release on ESL Music. This release is truly a long time in the making even though they only recently decided to put out original music under the name 'Afrolicious'. This 3 song EP features some of the amazingly talented folks who have helped make Afrolicious the eclectic and off the hook weekly party it has become. On Thursday Night Kinda Swing they have guests Baba Duru on percussion and scat vocals and Aaron Lebowitz on Saxophone and horn arrangements. A Dub For Mali features the fabulous Ngoni work and vocals of Yacouba Diara from Burinka Faso and Mali, and flute by Izzy * Wise and Foolin features the talented vocals and lyrics of Fresh is Life from Trinidad and the horn playing of Will Magid and Aaron Lebowitz. All guitars, bass and keys were layed down by Pleasuremaker and the arrangements were split with Pleasure and Rob Garza who completed the circle with holding down the production end. Señor Oz was up in the mix during the sessions bringing the vibes together and documenting some of the sessions. Dub for Mali and Foolin' remind me of the vibe of that afro/reggae track that Grant Phabao did with Amayo a few years back. This reggae/afro mixture is hard to pin down and Afrolicious really got it, really tasty and spiritual at the same time. Recommended!

The Pimps Of Joytime Janxta Funk
The Pimps Of Joytime - Janxta Funk!
(CD/Digital) Wonderwheel Recordings/Eighteen Street Lounge WONDER09, 2011-06-21 (digital) 2011-07-26 (CD)

Janxta Funk! by The Pimps of Joytime is a joyous and groove heavy drive down an open stretch of highway on a sunny day with no rush to get anywhere, yet always chugging along and pushing forward. Pulling you in with the title track that lays down the philosophy of this hard hitting Brooklyn boogie band and their message of the groove. The tone is set for a taste of the dance party, throw yourself into the mix kind of show this band puts on when they hit the stage. Drawing inspiration from Afro-beat, disco, funk, hip-hop, Latin, electronic, and folk forms this release truly is a melting pot of sounds. Enjoy the synth heavy disco funk of Keep the Music Playing, or the laid back roots based slow jam Blues Wit You, either way it's a jam baby, and it's a damn funky one at that. Groove to Pimpin' Music, or chill out to Walkin' featuring the legendary Roy Ayers. There is something for everyone. A little gritty and janky, yet clean and tight, this album will rock you and make ya move your dancing feet.

Idan K & The Movement of Rhythm - Cosmic Love Foundation - out on Booxa Records

Idan K and The Movement of Rhythm Cosmic Love Foundation
Idan K & The Movement of Rhythm - Cosmic Love Foundation
(digital album) Booxa Records boo1, 2011-06-13

Multi-instrumentalist, percussionist and borderline mentally ill, Idan K has been standing at the forefront of the Israeli music scene for almost two decades, collaborating with top talents both locally and internationally, as well as leading his own ensemble of fearless percussion warriors. In a musical landscape bursting with low-grade substitutes, Idan K and The Movement Of Rhythm shines brighter then ever. In an industry flooded with clichés, trying to pinhole Idan's music by describing it with words too often used, like 'groove', 'melting pot', 'afro', 'funk', 'dub', or 'dance', will not only do it an injustice and undermine its urgent creative value - it might also deprive many new ears deserving of new titillation. Theses ears will recognize unique, and groundbreaking sounds when they hear them. So here you have it. Over 5 years in the making, this album is the healthy child of colliding continents, a musical extravaganza recorded with 32 master musicians that came to be The Movement Of Rhythm. The result is an intelligent, complex and energetic peace of music tweaked to perfection. This is the rare type of music that expands and enriches, and even sometimes redefines, the genres and styles it relies upon as launch pad. Guaranteed to blow minds and nourish ears of the initiated as well as those who are just looking to shake their butts.

Doctor Stereo - La Cumbia Perdida - out on Names You Can Trust

Doctor Stereo La Cumbia Perdida
Doctor Stereo - La Cumbia Perdida
(7"/Download) Names You Can Trust NYCT 7007, 2011-07-04

Names You Can Trust presents No. 3 in its series of New Cumbia vinyl 45s. This latest release features an original track from Argentinian record junkie, producer and creator of the Soulfood parties in Buenos Aires, Doctor Stereo (aka Ezequiel Lodeiro), as well as a remix from Brazil's DJ Tahira. Doctor Stereo marks his debut on NYCT with a swinging summertime heatrock. La Cumbia Perdida is an exploration into early 1960s Cumbia roots, full of irresistible hip hugging piano licks against a contemporary backbone of heavy drums and squelchy synthesized effects. DJ Tahira (behind the excellent Fumãca Jazz Remix of GRC's Secret Stash on the NYCT Remixes EP) shifts the original track ever so slightly into Afro-Colombian territory, subtly adding a layer of quintessential Afro-Beat inspired guitar licks and a deft touch of deep subterranean bass.

Frente Cumbiero - Pitchito - out on Names You Can Trust

Frente Cumbiero Pitchito
Frente Cumbiero - Pitchito
(7"/Download) Names You Can Trust NYCT 7005, 2010-10-26

Straight out of Bogota Colombia, Frente Cumbiero make their debut vinyl release with two thumping original Cumbias that are sure to set dance floors on fire. Pitchito is an uptempo scorcher with a healthy dose of sparkling synth work and rattling percussion, finding its groove somewhere between Lonnie Liston Smith and golden era-Fuentes. Ananas Tornillo proves again why Frente Cumbiero is on the forefront of the Nueva Cumbia movement in Colombia, pairing an intoxicating keyboard hook with a biting bass line, freshly squeezed and served along the Andean Countryside. Frente Cumbiero explores the sound and identity that Cumbia represents in Latin America. Having participated in Cumbia related projects since 1999 in Colombia, Mexico, England, France and Holland (from roots to experimental), the collective has collaborated with key players in the burgeoning international movement, building bridges all the way from New York to Buenos Aires. With an ever-expanding interest in its sound, Frente Cumbiero remains a powerful link between Colombian roots music and the Nueva Cumbia generation.

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition - Cumbia Kikuchi - out on Names You Can Trust

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition Cumbia Kikuchi
Greenwood Rhythm Coalition - Cumbia Kikuchi
(7"/Download) Names You Can Trust NYCT 7004, 2010-10-04

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is back with a couple of low-slung tropical bubblers aimed straight at your summer barbecues and block parties. Cumbia Kikuchi crackles with a hypnotic horn line and pawn shop synths, chugging along relentlessly like a Peruvian space cowboy on mellow coca leaves. Regresar A Cali nods to lowriding funksters in both the Colombian city and its American namesake a bit further up the Pacific coast, playing kinda ruff with a Zapp-esque synbass that tangles with tropical guitar and percussion. The flagship operation of the Names You Can Trust label, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is produced and directed by Brooklyn stalwarts Monk-One and E's E. Having already put out a string of best-selling and critically acclaimed vinyl releases since 2007 (garnering play by the likes of Mr. Scruff, Quantic, Dom Servini and the Jelly Jazz crew to name a few), GRC continues to impress with it's unique hybrid of styles and influences aimed at discerning DJs and dancers alike.

Colman Brothers - out on Wah Wah 45s

Colman Brothers
Colman Brothers - Colman Brothers
(CD/Download) Wah Wah 45s WAHCD014, 2011-05-30

The Colman Brothers debut long-player is upon us at last! Inspired as always by 60's and 70's jazz and samba, typical of legends such as Freddie Hubbard & Horace Silver, and groups like Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass, the Colman Brothers' eponymous debut combines the influences of this golden age with their own deft production skills, and a little vocal assistance from Colman sister, Sara. The opening track, Mr. DG is a fitting tribute to Dizzy Gillespie himself, and the latin flavoured Momo a quirky little number that's sure to raise a smile or two; whereas the rather more ominous cut The Chief brings to mind 70's spy soundtracks, and the sultry Some Other Wonder (featuring Sara Colman on vocals) and On A Better Day are stirring moody late night beauties. Then there are the trademark Colman dance floor monsters too of course, in the shape of Sem Amor, El Nino and its younger sibling Another Brother, plus some forward thinking remix work courtesy of the boys themselves of the latter, and the classic single She Who Dares. A heavyweight album we're sure you'll agree!
