The Duke & The King's debut album Nothing Gold Can Stay was one of 2009's most acclaimed albums, with its heady mix of rootsy folk-rock and vintage soul earning comparisons with artists ranging from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to Sly & The Family Stone. Little over a year later, the band led by Simone Felice and Robert 'Chicken' Burke prepares for the September 27th release of their second album, the extraordinary Long Live The Duke & The King on Loose Music/ Silva Oak. Entirely self-produced, Long Live The Duke & The King was recorded in the band's own studio/shack deep in their home woods of Bearsville, New York. Exalting in their ongoing love affair with rock, folk, soul and psychedelia, The Duke & The King have officially knighted two irreplaceable members to the cast, Nowell "The Deacon" Haskins (of Parliament-Funkadelic lineage), and The Sensational Simi Stone, both of whom contribute golden vocals throughout this stunning collection of songs.

Après 3 albums avec Starflam dont Survivant sacré disque de platine en Belgique, Baloji entame une carrière solo avec un premier album Hôtel Impala (sortie en 2008). Sur fond de hip hop, soul, funk, afro-beat, il pose sa voix unique, laisse vivre sa conscience qui vise à réconcilier et réveiller les esprits dans une frénésie de sons sensuels et de rythmiques félines. Il revient aujourd’hui avec Kinshasa Succursale, relecture de 5 titres Hôtel Impala et 6 nouveaux titres enregistrés avec Konono n°1, Kasai All-star, Zaico Langa Langa. Un second album enregistré en une semaine à Kinshasa (Congo) dans un studio mobile avec les musiciens du chaudron local (des rappeurs, des chorales, des joueurs de balafon et autres instruments traditionnels). Dans une dense variété de styles, de la traditionnelle rumba congolaise à l’afro-funk nigérian, le magicien du sens nous transporte toujours plus loin dans sa quête initiatique.

The Duke & The King are a glam-soul-folk quartet from New York featuring Simone Felice, Bobbie Bird Burke, Simi Stone and Nowell Haskins. Named after the traveling Shakespeare hustlers in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn these curious blood-brothers (and sweet sister) have found a home together, a traveling Church of Harmony and Sin where its OK to french kiss your cousin and all strays are welcome to come out of the cold and sing along to these songs of love, loss, pathos, and hope.

On August 4, Ramseur Records in the US and Loose Records in the UK released Nothing Gold Can Stay by The Duke & The King, an album recorded in the the coldest Catskill winter, that shimmers with the light of memory and hope. The album features ten new songs, all co-written by The Duke (Simone Felice of The Felice Brothers) and The King (Robert Chicken Burke, from the Kraked family, longtime partner of Loik Dury, member of the cult Drugs soul/p-funk band, involved in many projects from the 20th connection of Paris DJs), and was recorded on a two-inch tape machine in Burke's one-room, woodstove-heated cabin - affectionately known as The Chapel - in Woodstock, NY. Folk-blue-eyed-soul at its best!

Some of you discovered Kologbo on stage at the Afrofunk party we organized last summer with Ebo Taylor & The Poets Of Rhythm. Some others already knew he was the tenor guitar player from Fela Kuti's Afrika 70 and he now plays on stage with Tony Allen. Some of you might even have heard the Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti album he released in 2007 with Berlin's heaviest afrobeat ensemble Afrobeat Academy... Trackaddicts gonna fonk you up!
L'album démarre sur une note plutôt festive, par un hip-pop avec quelques touches de ragga agréablement latin-isé et diablement sucré en funk, annonçant haut et fort la couleur "Good Time! Tonight!!", sur des lyrics référencés et irrévérencieux à la fois ("You got the right to fight for your right to unwind"). Puis dès le deuxième track on saisit que la lettre qui caratérisera le disque sera située juste entre le haut et le cul (avec tout qui remue entre-deux). En effet ces guitares quasi-saturées, ces breaks de dingues, ce funk suitant, oui madame voilà une bonne dose de P!! "P" comme dans "P-Funk", bien sûr...
Seulement voilà. Le 4ème track et MPC-hop-isant "Rock'n'Roll Star" évoque lui très vite les De La Soul et une bonne vieille prod de Prince Paul. "B.U.T.T. B.O.O.T.Y." vient alors remettre le couvert Parliament-thang en version plutôt digitale, avant un passage "funkadeli-soul en chaleur". Mais... mais... qu'est-ce donc que ce groupe hip hop funk qui mélange tous nos styles musicaux préférés tel un jamband et sa confiture à la framboise de genres divers et variés?
Les Trackaddicts seraient-ils les Beastie P-Boys que nous attendions depuis si longtemps de ce côté de l'Atlantique?? La seconde moitié de l'album semble le confirmer avec l'arrivée de cuivres "pétards à dents" et de synthés aux sonorités discoïdales sur fond de funk scandé, avec son coulis de break de carnaval imparable. S'ensuivent une paire de grooves junglebookesques, une ou deux N.E.R.D.eries bien dans l'espace ("I don't care girl, let me touch you there, I don't care girl, I want to kiss you there") avec double ryhtme batucadant et synthé à bulles, une courte interlude hilaro-communicative, un peu de hip hop à la sauce Big Dada (la meilleure d'Europe actuellement) et un soupçon de R'n'B pour n'oublier personne tout en clôturant l'album sur une note de second degré.
Et oui, les Oncles Paul français du funk et du hip hop de chez Kraked Records ont encore frappé et il ne reste plus qu'à attendre la sortie de cette petite bombe fin 2004/début 2005.
On conseillera aux impatients de se consoler avec la "Prescription For Mis-America" de D.R.U.G.S., que Kraked avaient sorti en 2002, un véritable objet de funkadelisme bientôt culte sur lequel il est encore temps de se jeter avidemment...
