Le Mellotron - From Jazz to Hip-Hop Pt.2 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-09-20 The first part of From Jazz To Hip-Hop was so enjoyable we nearly forgot it was a bit of a lick and a promise without its companion sequel, the one with the samplers. So here's the hip hop answer to the previous jazz selection from Le Mellotron, a mix made up with the hip hop tracks who sampled those jazz marvels dug up by DJs, who bring there proof of their incredible musical knowledge and their knowhow samples-wise. DJ JS-1 - No One Cares - out on Fatbeats
Monday 20 June 2011, 10:43

DJ JS-1 - No One Cares
(2xCD) Ground Original/Fat Beats Records JS1GO3CD, 2011-06-21
If you're fed up with producers who make "fake J Dilla beats" and "pop-star radio DJs" like DJ JS-1 is, the best thing to do is slap them across the face with some real boom bap sounds. So that's exactly what the Queens, New York DJ did with his new single, Boom Slap, and who better to amp up the slap than two of the kings of boom bap, KRS-One and Rahzel. The respective visionaries of rapping and beat boxing join their friend JS-1 on the first leak from No One Cares, which will be released on June 21st via Fat Beats Records. "My biggest selling single to date was my first single, Essentials, which featured KRS & Rahzel," says JS-1. "That was on my first album, Ground Original 1 in 2002. With this album being Ground Original 3 and the final installment of that series, I wanted to close out with a KRS & Rahzel track. Since his start in the early 90's, DJ JS-1 has witnessed hip-hop evolve over the years, and Boom Slap explains exactly how he feels about hip-hop in 2011. "I'm all about boom bap, regardless of how some of these new-jacks feel," explains the DJ/producer. "There are tons of people making pretty music, and that's nice for an R&B group, but we make that boom bap that slaps you when you hear it." This song does just that, as JS-1's hard-hitting beat serves as the foundation for Rahzel's background vocals and patented vocal scratches, while KRS verbally assaults the beat with his unmistakable flow. "The style of hip hop we create is not going anywhere," says JS-1. "People can say what they want - make what they want - but this style will always be here. Forever, and ever, we will be here forever..."
Breakestra - Dusk Till Dawn

Breakestra - Dusk Till Dawn
(CD/2xLP/Digital) Strut/K7 Strut048CD/LP, 2008-09-28
For 2009, Breakestra return with their long-awaited sophomore set exploring all colours of the funk spectrum. Built around the vision of "Music Man" Miles and Mixmaster Wolf (as well as producing, recording and writing the tracks, Miles performs bass, drums, guitars, cello, keys, percussion and vocals on the record), the trademark Breakestra touches remain intact: Wolf fronts tough breakbeat jams Dark Clouds Rain Soul and Stones Throw single Low Down Stank; Miles himself brings his soulful vocals to Need A Little Love and I Don't Wanna Wait and amazing new female vocalist Afrodyete recalls the heyday of JB's Funky People on the terrific Come On Over. The album even journeys into psychedelic soul (on the fuzzy Show Me The Way) and stripped-back West African farfisa stylings on instrumental cut, North-East To Nippon. Dusk Till Dawn is a tribute to Tackett's late DJ partner at Rootdown, DJ Dusk, whose life was tragically taken in a road accident in 2007. Dusk himself appears alongside Jurassic 5's Chali 2na on the funky rap joint Posed To Be and the album is a fitting tribute to a much-loved L.A. figure and integral member of a scene which has become globally respected.

Chali 2na - Fish Outta Water
(CD) Decon Records, 2009-06-23
From his roots on the south side of Chicago, to his subsequent explosion onto Los Angeles' burgeoning Hip Hop scene, Chali 2na epitomizes the portrait of a 21st century artist. Probably best known as front man for the groups Jurassic 5 & Ozomatli, Chali 2na presents his first solo effort in a 15+ year career - Fish Outta Water. A deeply personal body of work, Fish Outta Water reveals a side of the MC that his fans have never seen, a story from start to finish of his life, loves, triumphs and let downs, weaving in a powerful selection of beats from the likes of Scott Storch, Jake One and memorable appearances from Damian 'Jr. Gong' and Stephen Marley, Talib Kweli, Anthony Hamilton, Beenie Man and others. Fish Outta Water is the next chapter, and the latest incarnation of the MC, musician, actor, painter and renaissance man, Chali 2na.
Who's pushing Decon in France now that's their former distributor Nocturne is dead?
Paris DJs Soundsystem - Is That Jazz ?

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Is That Jazz? (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-03-11 This mix started as a 'Hip Hop vs Jazz' mix and soon evolved into a '21st Century Swing' selection. But then we figured we really loved our b-boy caps and decided to go towards turntablism, playing around with jazz samples and more cut'n'paste of swinging beats. Props to Ali B of Air Recordings for releasing such quality 45s - we played one in this mix and licenced two others for the 'It's The New Hip Hop Thing' compilation out now (Vibrations/Harmonia Mundi)! More friendly UK labels are here too...
