Sixteen heavyweight super-tough deep funk ultra-rarities – uncovered at last!

Will Quantic is known around the world for his blistering stage performances with his band the Quantic Soul Orchestra. His ear for a good tune, and his feel for a good rhythm didn’t come from nowhere – you see Quantic has been collecting rare funk 45s for years, and in that time he has absorbed every drum kick, every horn line and every guitar lick into his very soul.

It’s hard to make good music without drawing upon good influence, and we at Jazzman worry about the rubbish that kids today are listening to - it doesn’t bode well for the future of music in this world. So along with Quantic, we have unearthed some of the very best and rarest funk 45s known (and unknown) to man. These records are pure quality – the exhorbitant prices that collectors will pay for the originals lays testament to that and will stand the test of time as a barometer of good ol’ funky music that is truly inspirational.

It’s a shame that the original 45s are so rare, with only a few hundred being pressed in many cases, but it is possible that with such rarity comes excellence, distinction and quality. We sincerely hope that by drawing attention to not only the music, but the stories behind the music and the performers themselves, we will inspire more people in the world to create and perform music of the calibre that Quantic does today. En 2002, les archéologistes Anglais du funk Jazzman nous avaient gratifié d'une compile "Texas funk" préfacée par Dj Shadow, expert en vieux 45 tours de funk forts en breaks et rare groove, indispensable à tout bon collectionneur de funk. Ils reviennent cette année après avoir poussé un peu plus loin leurs recherches avec une compilation "Midwest funk" qui les a vu arpenter toute la région des États-Unis située entre les Rocheuses et les Appalaches, en gros, à la quête de 45 tours, de bandes et surtout des anecdotes et autorisations des ayants droits afin de signer tous ces titres en toute légalité. L'album est disponible en avant-première sur Ebay (pour 100 CDs et autant de vinyles) en attendant la sortie officielle en Mars 2004 prochain!

La "Library Music", dite musique d'illustration (à l'image) est devenue source de multiples compilations tendances psyché-jazz-funk-jerk-pop (prononcez très vite !). Pascal Armand, DJ et sélecteur des albums "Shake sauvage" et "Stereo Ultra", a réuni ici des titres du catalogue français MPI, dont près de la moitié sont dus à Claude Vasori. Le maigre livret nous apprend que ce dernier a notamment composé les bo de deux splendides nanars réalisés en 1962: "Mon oncle du Texas", avec Jesse Hahn (le gros ricain des "Barbouzes" de Lautner) et Henri Tisot ("comique" français spécialisé dans les imitations du Général de Gaulle...) ainsi que "Satan conduit le bal", produit par Roger Vadim pour sa jeune et sémillante nouvelle épouse d'alors, Catherine Deneuve. Oui, c'est bien beau, me direz-vous, mais cela ne nous en dit pas tellement plus long sur le contenu de cette compile. Je vous répondrai que si vous me laissiez poursuivre, j'aurai pu assurer une transition splendide, au moyen d'un autre grand compositeur du 7ème art français, j'ai nommé Vladimir Cosma (oui, "La Boum", la série des "Grands blonds", c'est lui !), également sollicité sur deux titres. En ce qui concerne les autres musiciens présents sur cet album (Manu Dibango et le pianiste de jazz Georges Arvanitas), leur présence dans le monde merveilleux de la "Musique pour l'image" tient sans doute plus à des raisons financières que profondément artistiques... Cela pour en arriver définitivement à un jugement qui, pour péremptoire qu'il est, restera gravé dans les tablettes de la critique souvent injuste mais néanmoins salvatrice: tout cela est finalement très anecdotique, peu inspiré, avec un arrière-goût profond d'inutilité. A moins d'être fan de Claude Vasori, auquel cas cet album se révèle indispensable. Les autres, dont je fais hélas partie, attendront une rediffusion de "Satan conduit le bal", histoire de pouvoir mater Catherine Deneuve à poil, du temps de sa splendeur (ne loupez-pas le début du film, ça se passe pendant les premières séquences !). Ça, c'est vraiment "French Jazzbeat !"

This time last year we pressed and sold all 1000 copies of James Brown's seasonal smash 'Soulful Christmas', which meant that at least 1000 Xmas parties across the world had a brief 3 minutes delight of getting down to the funky sounds of Soul Brother #1, while otherwise enduring the usual Christmas kak of Val Doonican, Kylie and Russ Abbot. This year it's the turn of those marvellous boys from southern Germany, the Soul-Saints Orchestra (aka Poets of Rhythm), to get those dull parties fired up and cookin', and they know just how to do it – they just ask Santa to bring a bag of soul!
Originally released as a Christmas giveaway for the Hotpie & Candy record company in 1995, Santa's Got a Bag of Soul and it's original flipside Working on the Line is the rarest title of the Poets Of Rhythm/Hotpie & Candy catalog - only 250 copies were pressed! Both songs quickly turned into early deepfunk classics, favoured by the likes of Keb Darge, Snowboy and Ian Wright. The small pressing run means originals remain rare and they have been known to change hands for 3 figure sums. Now paired with the previously-unissued-on-45 instrumental Bag of Soul, it's destined to be the soulful soundtrack for all 4 seasons, not just for Christmas.
