Stuart McCallum - Distilled - out on Naim Jazz

Stuart McCallum Distilled
Stuart McCallum - Distilled
(CD/Digital) Naim Jazz/Harmonia Mundi NAIMCD169, 2011-11-10

Manchester guitarist and composer Stuart McCallum is best known for his work with The Cinematic Orchestra. The distinctive, ethereal and atmospheric sound of his guitar has been at the heart of their sound since 2004, including on the albums Ma Fleur and Live At The Royal Albert Hall and the award winning soundtrack The Crimson Wing. His own music influenced by jazz and DJ Culture is a distillation of many influences, creating a sound that is concentrated and distinctive. McCallum who admits to influences from Wes Montgomery to Bjork, Flying Lotus to Bon Iver and James Blake to Bill Frisell, as well as modern art, eschews over complicated harmonic and rhythmical structures in favour of a rich mix of electronica and improvisation enriched by elegant orchestral writing. Distilled, McCallum's brilliant third album, and first for new label Naim, is a culmination of the music he has written over the last few year and the idea of ‘distillation' is right at the heart of how the record was written…

Kovacs - Vortex EP - out on Hiperbole Records

Kovacs Vortex EP
Kovacs - Vortex EP
(Digital) Hiperbole Records HBR-007, 2011-10-28

Longtime friend and Hiperbole Jazz ambassador Kovacs a.k.a. Nandor Kürtössy was getting attention when he released his Eastern Block EP on the hungarian Budabeats Netlabel. Three years later he now releases his debut album on the hungarian Chameleon Records label which will be an exclusive give-away. The Vortex EP represents a selection of previously unreleased tracks from his album. His production sound comes with a skalpel-esque attitude and offers a wonderful journey through his jazzed up mind. Deep sounding drums and some catchy and glitchy sounds come along fine tuned double-bass lines. Kovacs music contains a lot of subtle details which are woven to a bright mosaic of sounds and he has a perfect feeling for composing his brew of deep Jazz sounds into a mind-tripping journey for the listener.

Ensemble Du Verre - The Contemporary Cowboy - out on Batterie Records

Ensemble Du Verre The Contemporary Cowboy
Ensemble Du Verre - The Contemporary Cowboy
(CD/Digital) Batterie 015, 2011-10-07

Sönke Düwer, who has led the Ensemble since 2003, has put together a small group of musicians previously unrelated to the Ensemble Du Verre. Thanks to the British tenor sax player Penrose Feast the record has a strong jazzy touch and a big melodic diversity. Double bass player Marc Muellbauer from Berlin added a warm deep sound and a very special energy. With his additional creative beats and sounds drummer Oliver Sonntag from Lübeck plays an important role in the record's impressive instrumental sound. The contribution of Eden singer and the ensemble's vocal partner for many years, Ute Lorenzen, is an unearhty choir on Seven Miles Down, while guitar player Lothar Müller from Hamburg has added an ultra modern western guitar on All Hat And No Cuttle. This album feels like the successor of the prize-winning CD Sanctuary For Animals and is a manifestation of the uniqueness and the independence of the composer, musician and producer, Sönke Düwer, who not only has played the drums but also all keyboards, guitars, electronics and percussion. The Contemporary Cowboy, out on October 7th on Batterie, will be release No 15 since the label was founded in 2008. The new E.D.V. band will play several concerts beginning with the Überjazz Festival on the last Octoberweekend at Kampnagel in Hamburg.

The Greg Foat Group - Dark Is The Sun - out on Jazzman Records

The Greg Foat Group Dark Is The Sun
The Greg Foat Group - Dark Is The Sun
(CD/LP/Digital) Jazzman Records, 2011-05-20

After the discovery of The Natural Yogurt Band, Jazzman Records have found another amazing contemporary Psych-Groove band and have released another essential record! Recorded in Sweden, Dark is the Sun is a concept album based on themes and variations by British pianist/composer/arranger Greg Foat, who has created an intriguing blend of non-contemporary jazz sounds with classic scoring techniques. An exotic array of unorthodox instrumentation was utilized, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15 piece choir. With musical reference and influence from such luminaries as Bruno Nicolai, Michel Legrand and Serge Gainsbourg as well as a firm nod towards UK jazzmen Michael Garrick, Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw, the result is highly-listenable, enduring and fulfilling for those who like real music played with real instruments. We didn't get any promo of this album and the reasons we're announcing its release (from May 2011) today are simple: the album is a must-have… and we'll publish next week an exclusive Greg Foat Sci-Fi Bugalu Mix along with a very interesting interview!!

Triberg - Himmelreich & Höllental EP - out on Hiperbole Records

Triberg Himmelreich and Hollental EP
Triberg - Himmelreich & Höllental EP
(Digital) Hiperbole Records HBR-005, 2011-09-23

Hiperbole Records is proud to present Triberg, a project by german producer and multi instrumentalist Michael Hoppe. Based in the south of Germany, deep in the woods amidst the wonderful Black Forest landscape, where gnomes and dwarfes rule the underground, and fairy tales and mystic brews have been born over the centuries. This is the home of Triberg, and he has produced a unique sound of Jazz and Kraut. The music will take you back in time, on a journey through a wonderful mind, inspired by the world around. All six tracks on the EP represent villages or spots in the Black Forest, while the title Himmelreich & Höllental EP can be translated as "Kingdom Of Heaven & Valley Of Hell". A dark and mystic sound brew like misty mornings, with a red glowing sun hovering above the treetops. Little sneaky sounds cut through the woods like giants walking through the trees, where sunlight twinkles through the branches and foxes and hedgehogs feel at home. Simply beautiful...

Steven Bernstein's Millenial Territory Orchestra - MTO Plays Sly - out on Royal Potato Family

Millenial Territory Orchestra MTO Plays Sly
Millenial Territory Orchestra - MTO Plays Sly
(CD/LP/Digital) Royal Potato Family RPF 1110, 2011-09-27

Originally commissioned by NYC River To River Fest, MTO Plays Sly is Steven Bernstein's love letter to the musical genius of Sly Stone. Growing up in the San Francisco bay area in the 60's Bernstein was first exposed to this music coming from the radio, as well as neighbor's parties. While constantly adding musical delicacies to his plate, Sly has remained a source of inspiration to Bernstein for over 30 years. Recast in the classic format of big band with organ (or more specifically Territory band with organ), these new arrangements unveil the melodic and harmonic brilliance of Sly Stone. While his lyrics range from the optimism of the 60's to the paranoia of the 70's, it is his musical skills that set him apart from his contemporaries. Full of melodic counterpoint and surprising harmonic twists, Sly's music remains timeless. The CD MTO Plays Sly, slated for a fall 2011 release, features P-Funk legend Bernie Worrell on B-3 organ and special guest Vernon Reid, alongside singers Antony, Martha Wainright, Dean Bowman, Sandra St Victor and Shilpa Ray.

Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band - Rubber Orchestras - out on Heavenly Sweetness

Anthony Joseph and the Spasm Band Rubber Orchestras
Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band - Rubber Orchestras
(CD/2xLP/Digital) Heavenly Sweetness/Naïve HS048, 2011-09-12

"The griot is the sound of universal culture." The opening words of his third album (after Leggo de Lion on Kindred Spirits in 2007 and Bird Head son in 2009) introduces us to the universe of Anthony Joseph. Born in Trinidad and based in UK since 20 years, Anthony is one of the UK's most exciting and innovative voices, poet, novelist, musician and lecturer. Anthony has called on the talents of producer Malcolm Catto, drummer and lead singer with The Heliocentrics. The decisive presence of the producer isn't the only new ingredient in the retro-futurist blend, which combines raw jazz and deep soul, black rock and Afrobeat, soca funk and free swing... This is no backward-looking revival or sterile fusion; this grand mix gives a new and modern perspective to all these musical styles. There are other guests on Rubber Orchestras, as the singer Jasnett Lindo but also Jerry Dammers, the legendary founder of The Specials took to the controls to arrange and enhance a visionary and revolutionary poem, the iconic suite called Generations. To announce this new fantastic and unique album, Anthony Joseph is back on Paris DJs with a new podcast - and you can still download his Roots & Influences one hour mix from late 2008...

"One of the deeply essential rare groove releases of 2011!!" - Djouls/Paris DJs"
"Rubber Orchestras is simply a grand album. Very impressive." - Nicolas Ragonneau/Paris DJs
