Ivan Tchijevsky More Latin Than Soviet Vol 2
Ivan Tchijevsky - Smile Brothers
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2010-03-14

The life of hip-hop in the USSR era started with the rise of street breakdancing and festivals which took place all over the country. The first wave came around 1985 but the information on the movement and music was really rare, and the ones which were available became the platform for imitation. A lot of the upcoming breakdance crews slowly started to reform in to hip-hop collectives and the b-boys started to put toghether their own rap bands.

This mix represents the hip-hop band, creators of which just happened to be the first wave of b-boys in the USSR. The members roots come from the 80s hip-hop. Member Skalya was a b-boy in Stop and Tetraider crews which later became Bad Balance. While other member was breakdancing in crew like Black and White (which was quite popular on tours and videoclips under the name Blanche & Noir, which took place in France) and Malchishnik. Later on, the guys formed a rap band named DETSO in the mid 90s.

Consequently, the band was called Smile brothers and got quite popular with their videoclips and concerts being heavily rotated on MTV Russia (The image ad Bzzz on MTV, soundtracks for films: Don't even think, Sex and the city), and also had some releases: 1997 – DETSO I'm here, Kolya, 2000 – Smile brothers Julia loves, 2001 – Smile brothers Funkpositive, 2004 – Smile brothers Here is not there and also the internet release of Smile brothers – The Best (Remastered 2008). These days, the band is finishing recording their 6th album Old School and is working on its own antiart movie named The zombies here are wild.

The Given compositions were released on labels: Krem Records, Stil Records, CD Land, Real Records, Souz and Mamapapa.

Ivan Tchijevsky More Latin Than Soviet Vol 2
Ivan Tchijevsky - More Latin Than Soviet Vol.2
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-11-15

While Tchijevsky was on a trip to Germany, having good times and chilling at BOTY 2009, lets discuss his new mix More latin than soviet vol.2. The first part of the mix turned out to be quite intense, filled with those various vintage synthesizer lines. I reckon it's an interesting topic for discussion as in the Soviet Union era it wasn't easy to get your hands on models of synthesizers made by such firms like Korg, Yamaha, Roland and etc. In order for a musician to obtain one, one had to order it from abroad which wasn't as easy to do, it was actually almost impossible with the earning which were at the times and the weak trading relations between countries. That is why the local musicians had to use soviet ones. Most famous among the soviet synthesizers were Polivox, Ritm-2, Alisa, Opus, Skerco, Solaris, Unost and Electronica.

Nowadays, to get one in a good condition is really a hard task. You would have to check all the lockers at grannies places to hunt one down, and even if you'll find one, it will take you some time and money to get one in shape. Be sure to check these website with a catalogue of all the soviet synthesizers ever made: www.ruskeys.net.

The second part of the mix has more of that smooth jazz touch to it with melodies coming from latin american flavors, as well as with some fantastic techniques coming from Igor Bril, Alexander Tartakovsky, Ivars Galenieks, the Misailov trio, also from Bumerang and Disco bands. These records have a very special and important place in the history of soviet music and are just really enjoyable tunes. The diamonds of the podcast are such tunes as Girl from Ipanema and For what it's worth played by soviet musicians from all the corners of Eurasia. Enjoy!

Tracklisting :
01. One day In Kiev - Jazz Ensemble "Mugam"
02. Concert for the voice by Constantin Petrosyan

Info :
This is my fifth podcast, and to celebrate it, I have prepared something special, jazzy and at the same time, sodden with Caucasus folk culture. This podcast consists of two parts: First – is a fragment (pictures of Caucasus) of an jazz-ensemble called "Mugam" lead by Vagif Mustafa-Zade (1978).
Vagif Mustafa-zade – was a prize winner of such festivals as "Tallin-66", "Tallin-67" and "Jazz-69" in Azerbaijan. In 1977 Vagif became a prize-winner of an United Jazz festival in Donezk. Jazz festival "Tbilisi-78" has brought him a name as the best pianist in USSR. Having taken participation in the International jazz composition contest held in Monaco in 1979, Vagif won the First prize and received a beautiful white piano as a prize. Finding a more detailed biography of Vagif Mustafa-zade isn't that hard, most importantly is the effect his music brings on you.

Jazz-ensemble “Mugam”
Vagif Mustafa-zade, piano
Roman Sarkisov, tenor-sax
Eybar Mamedbaylee, guitar
Devid Coyfman, bass
Arcady Dadashian, drums

Second part of the podcast is a fragment of a big-band concert by Vladimir Chekasin, with an assistance of an composer named Constantin Petrosyan. The voice of the project became Tatevick Oganesyan – the "queen" of soviet jazz vocal, the Russian Ella Fitzgerald. Even nowadays, she is still matchless in the jazz mainstream. Tatevick's manner of singing is heavily influenced by traditional Armenian music. She has sang in America, Europe, Australia. She received applauses at Lincoln center and Carnegie Hall.

Big-band solos :
Tatevick Oganesyan, vocal
Piatras Vishniaskas, soprano-sax, baritone sax
Oleg Malokoedov, keybords
Constantin Petrosian, piano
Vladimir Chekasin, alt-sax
Eduard Kuskin, trumpet
Valdemaras Yankus, trumpet
Vitautas Labutis, sax
Vitautas Pilibavichus, trombone
Leonid Shinkarenko, bass
Gedimias Laurinavichus, drums

Info :
The idea to make this podcast struck me when I heard that Winter Olympic Games in 2014 would take place in Sochi. There is a record in my collection which is called "Sochi". It is dedicated to this wonderful resort in the South of Russia. Well, Sochi status has changed to a would-be olympic capital now. The opening track in the mix is a song in Spanish recorded by a cuban singer Lourdes Gil together with the cinematographic orchestra of the USSR directed by Silantyev. The rest of the mix is compiled of records released by "Melodia" over the years, including discs that were made just before the Olympic Games '80 in Moscow.
