Jan Kohlmeyer Yuletide DJ Mix for Paris DJs

Radio Citizen - Express Brassmania

From electro-organic funktronica to jazz, soul & afro, Niko Schabel and friends a.k.a. Radio Citizen have already amazed us twice, in 2006 with Berlin Serengeti, and in 2010 with Hope and Despair (both on Ubiquity Records). Niko has been playing a lot live and improvising, with Radio Citizen, the Niko Schabel Quartet, the Express Brass Band and other bands from Germany. He cooked for Paris DJs this very nice brass band mix, with mostly live, unpublished recordings!...

Seven Heven - Compiled by Mark Webster - out on BBE Records

BBE Seven Heven
Seven Heven - Perfect Slices of Soul, Funk and Funky Jazz from the 21st Century New Music from the Original Compact Disc-Otheque
Compiled by Mark Webster
(CD/2LP/Digital/7" vinyl single) Barely Breaking Even BBE171, 2011-05-17

The revolution starts here! With World Record Store Day just behind us, bringing with it the news that vinyl sales were up 12% in 2010, what better time for BBE records to proudly announce the release of a compilation album that celebrates great new music, from across the globe, released by a series of independent labels, and all born on popular music's original and most natural format - the 7" single. Compiled by broadcaster, journalist, DJ and long time black music fanatic Mark Webster, Seven Heven brings together music released since 2000 by labels from the UK , Europe and America and highlights what is a burgeoning scene encompassing musicians, singers, DJs, clubs, gigs and an ever growing following of enthusiasts. And because this music is released by indie labels, a lot of it is already in the hard-to-get category - making Seven Heven an even more essential collection of music, Good is great, but good and rare, even better!! Seven Heven taps into all areas of the black music genre - sweet soul, organ-heavy soul jazz, pure funk, classy disco, vocal jazz, latin and all stops in between. Indeed, one of the tunes, 'Better Living', was only originally available on download so we became part of the solution, not the problem and pressed up our own 7" single. Thus, it's on the compilation. The 7" single is certainly making a comeback across the whole of pop - it always was and remains the symbol of 'youth music ' - and on Seven Heven we see that 'punk' attitude writ large. SAY IT LOUD, I'M 7 AND I'M PROUD!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-29 This Hypnotic Brass Ensemble blew my mind the first time I heard them. I had seen some videos on YouTube but was finally able to grab two copy of their War/Mercury 10 inch at a local record store (thank you to the kind people selling Jazz and World @ Gibert Joseph in Paris!)... The spare one went into the hands of Pierre from Souljazz Orchestra who got to see them onstage a few days after, opening for Mos Def in Amsterdam. He told me they totally stole the show, which I'm sure they did!...

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
(CD/LP) Honest Jon's Records HJRCD42/HJRLP42, 2009-05-25

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a 9-piece, Chicago-based jazz group featuring 8 sons of Phil Cohran (Sun Ra's Arkestra) on horns. Originally from Chicago, the brothers started as a street ensemble, busking on the sidewalks before recording their first single in 2004. They have performed with Mos Def, Aquilla Sadalla and Phil Cohran & recorded with the likes of Erykah Badu and Maxwell. Bringing together their musicianship, jazz roots and hip hop sensibilities HBE have toured relentlessly to become known as one of the hottest and most individual bands around. Featured last summer in Honest Jon's Chop Up shows the band played alongside Tony Allen, Damon Albarn & Candi Staton.

Citizen Dale - Platters That Matters Today (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-01 We got this mix sent to us by Citizen Dale from Canada (our music is a secret order but knows no boundaries). The selection features mainly new tracks with a sweet little bit of old spice thrown in to keep it smooth. It's heavily New York-based with some tips of the hat to lands 'n' bands over the Atlantic. Expect lots of Funk and Soul, with a few pieces of Latin and Jazz... [comment faire?/how to?] Tracklisting : 01. Lefties Soul Connection - Here Come the Girls feat. Flowmega (from 'Have Love Will...

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Alyo / Flipside

Alyo Flipside
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Alyo / Flipside
(10") Honest Jon's Records HJP047, 2009-04-20

Written by Philip Cohran in memory of Alyo Tolbert, star dancer for the Montu Dance Company in Chicago, Alyo is the hardest, funkiest track from the imminent album (with Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics on drums); and in memory of the band's friend and rabblerouser, Flipside wobbles and woozes, tippy-toes and pirouettes, with Mingus in its bones.
