Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-29
This Hypnotic Brass Ensemble blew my mind the first time I heard them. I had seen some videos on YouTube but was finally able to grab two copy of their War/Mercury 10 inch at a local record store (thank you to the kind people selling Jazz and World @ Gibert Joseph in Paris!)... The spare one went into the hands of Pierre from Souljazz Orchestra who got to see them onstage a few days after, opening for Mos Def in Amsterdam. He told me they totally stole the show, which I'm sure they did! Listening to their rare self-released albums (on CDR you can buy at their shows) or concert that are circulating on the Internet (you gotta check the one with Tony Allen!) can only mean one thing: the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is currently one of the few killer live bands out there!! They'll be playing next Wednesday in Paris at the New Morning and we have 10 tickets to offer - be there or be square!

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
(CD/LP) Honest Jon's Records HJRCD42/HJRLP42, 2009-05-25
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a 9-piece, Chicago-based jazz group featuring 8 sons of Phil Cohran (Sun Ra's Arkestra) on horns. Originally from Chicago, the brothers started as a street ensemble, busking on the sidewalks before recording their first single in 2004. They have performed with Mos Def, Aquilla Sadalla and Phil Cohran & recorded with the likes of Erykah Badu and Maxwell.
Bringing together their musicianship, jazz roots and hip hop sensibilities HBE have toured relentlessly to become known as one of the hottest and most individual bands around. Featured last summer in Honest Jon's Chop Up shows the band played alongside Tony Allen, Damon Albarn & Candi Staton.

Citizen Dale - Platters That Matters Today
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-01
We got this mix sent to us by Citizen Dale from Canada (our music is a secret order but knows no boundaries). The selection features mainly new tracks with a sweet little bit of old spice thrown in to keep it smooth. It's heavily New York-based with some tips of the hat to lands 'n' bands over the Atlantic. Expect lots of Funk and Soul, with a few pieces of Latin and Jazz...

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Alyo / Flipside
(10") Honest Jon's Records HJP047, 2009-04-20
Written by Philip Cohran in memory of Alyo Tolbert, star dancer for the Montu Dance Company in Chicago, Alyo is the hardest, funkiest track from the imminent album (with Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics on drums); and in memory of the band's friend and rabblerouser, Flipside wobbles and woozes, tippy-toes and pirouettes, with Mingus in its bones.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - The Brothas
(CD) self-released, 2008-12-18
Anyone who saw this band on stage knows the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are the shit. Friends from Souljazz Orchestra, whom I had sold my spare copy of the "War" 10 inch to, saw them in Amsterdam, opening for Mos Def before playing as his backing band. They told me the HBE were the real deal, 100% stealing the show!
They released this new CD-R, "The Brothas" at the end of 2008, which I never saw in Europe anywhere, excepted at shows...
