The Sport of Selection

The Friday Night Session - Exclusive Paris DJs mix

The Friday Night Session radio show hosted by Andrew Jervis (former Ubiquity Records A&R) has just relaunched his website with a brand new name, The Sport of Selection. First guest were Azaxx & Diesler, then Rob Luis of Tru Thoughts Recordings. I was more than proud to get invited to do the third mix of the show, with a special guest interview with Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6/Brownswood Records), followed by an exclusive mix by myself ('Djouls of the Paris DJs'). Tune-in on thesportofselection.com to give it a listen. Including some rare and exclusive tracks and remixes from Lee...

Paris DJs Soundsystem Bag Of Goodies Vol 5

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.5

There's a particularity to our Bag of Goodies mixes this year. The selection is only made up of records and music either sent to us by labels and artists, or which we actually bought in record stores in the recent weeks. It'll be hard for us to be more supportive and current than that. We usually gather for a listening session with a few of our favorite new tracks in the bag, and try to hit the decks instantly in order for the mix to be spontaneous. This past month was full of great new music and reissues - as always - and we can't thank enough labels such as BBE Music, Kat Records,...

DJ Manchild Nonstop Disco Dandia

DJ Manchild's Disco Dandia

We recently did a focus on Australian label HopeStreet Recordings, reviewing a bunch of 45s from The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, The Bombay Royale, The Cactus Channel and The Putbacks. Hope Street have been working with a couple of Melbourne's most widely travelled DJs and collectors, about getting some mixes together related to their releases, and asked Paris DJs to help spreading the good word. Here's the first one of those mixes, prepared with love by Ethan Hill aka DJ Manchild who's been sorting out and blending some amazing rarities of Bollywood music circa 1965-1985, all off original...

This is our 68th mix in 2011, twenty came from our own decks, while we managed to bring in 48 guest mixes. So, a big THANK YOU to all the artists, DJs and record collectors who shared some musical pleasure with us during the last twelve months: Hidden Orchestra, Gato Loco, Blend Mishkin, DJ Tom B., DJ Chicken George, Waxist Selecta, Renegades of Jazz, Seun Kuti, Chris Menist, Onur Engin, Blitz The Ambassador, Big Pimp Jones,...

The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra - Mr Clean (pts.1&2) - out on Hope Street Recordings

The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra Mr Clean
The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra - Mr Clean (pts.1&2)
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS005, 2011-09-27

After The Liberators (Record Kicks) and The Shaolin Afronauts (Freestyle Records), here's another Afrobeat band from Australia: The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra! They seem to have already self-released 2 albums worth of material and if Hope Street Recordings opted for this track to put out on a gritty 45, there's a reason: this uptempo afrofunk piece in two parts will hit you 'In Yo Face' lke the dirty stormer it is. The band gathers 17 Merlbourne-based musicians and we can only be left to wonder what else is to be found in those two albums... and in the next ones!
PS If representatives of other Aussie Afro bands such as Big Fela or Askari Afrobeat Orchestra want to get reviewed/played on Paris DJs, they should get in touch with us...

The Bombay Royale - Sote Sote Adhi Raat / Solla Solla Enna Perumai - out on Hope Street Recordings

(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS004, 2011-08

I don't really know what this is. Obscure Bollywood tracks reworked for the funk/disco/breaks audience by Australian funksters? New tracks produced to sound like funky vintage Indian Blaxploitation? It doesn't really matter since the resulting recordings are just plain amazing. The A-side Sote Sote Adhi Raat is just bonkers. An absolute killer Bolywood disco track that needs to be put in all decent DJ bags, it sounds as if The Mackrosoft were born in India! Get this 45 before it sells out!!

The Cactus Channel - Pepper Snaker / The Dap - out on Hope Street Recordings

The Cactus Channel - Pepper Snaker / The Dap
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS003, 2011-01

The Cactus Channel are a ten piece high school funk orchestra from Melbourne, with an average age of sixteen. A biographical fact that's hard to believe since these kids are "burning down original funk breaks and breaking down funk originals with a musical maturity far beyond their years", as the press release says. Their Pepper Snake is indeed funky as hell, while catchy and melodious as candy. "Irresistible" would be the exact definition of the feeling one can get with this track, cos' it's gonna be hard to not groove on this one. The b-side, The Dap, is a cover from New Orleans trumpeter Warren 'Porgy' Jones. With its irresistibly uplifting groove, full horn section and instrumentation (guitar, bass, organ and percussion), it's quite unclassifiable, between afro-pop and southern soul. AND another classic Molesting Laura track!! Very recommended!

The PutBacks - Busted / Set Me Free - out on Hope Street Recordings

The PutBacks - Busted / Set Me Free
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS002, 2010-04

April 2010 was on of my last months as a partner of the Superfly Records store, and I distinctly remember listening to this marvelous 7 inch and ordering a few copies for the shop... The A-side, Busted start as retro-swinging as a funky Bo Diddley instrumental, before adding some deep breaks, guitar choruses and finally... a singalong verse for all the heads of the world: "I'm... so busted"!! B-side Set Me Free is a soul/jazz instrumental cover of a mid-60s track from The Kinks and deserves a rightful place in a Molesting Laura mix: we'll try not to forget it next time we're busting the lady (who's the opposite of 'busted', by the way!). And now we're all waiting for a PutBacks full length...

(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS001, 2009-09

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to the A-side of this first 45 from Australian label Hope Street Recordings is The Bamboos, of course, with their high-octane retro-funk featuring amazing & soulful guest vocals, may it be from Alice Russell, Kylie Auldist or Randa Khamis. The PutBacks are the band responsible for the deep funk appearing on this 7 inch release and their instrumental on the b-side could be the theme of many TV shows. This is the promise of a radiant future for Hope Street Recordings!
