Greenwood Rhythm Coalition - Cumbia Kikuchi - out on Names You Can Trust

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition Cumbia Kikuchi
Greenwood Rhythm Coalition - Cumbia Kikuchi
(7"/Download) Names You Can Trust NYCT 7004, 2010-10-04

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is back with a couple of low-slung tropical bubblers aimed straight at your summer barbecues and block parties. Cumbia Kikuchi crackles with a hypnotic horn line and pawn shop synths, chugging along relentlessly like a Peruvian space cowboy on mellow coca leaves. Regresar A Cali nods to lowriding funksters in both the Colombian city and its American namesake a bit further up the Pacific coast, playing kinda ruff with a Zapp-esque synbass that tangles with tropical guitar and percussion. The flagship operation of the Names You Can Trust label, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is produced and directed by Brooklyn stalwarts Monk-One and E's E. Having already put out a string of best-selling and critically acclaimed vinyl releases since 2007 (garnering play by the likes of Mr. Scruff, Quantic, Dom Servini and the Jelly Jazz crew to name a few), GRC continues to impress with it's unique hybrid of styles and influences aimed at discerning DJs and dancers alike.

Electric Cowbell presents 101 Things To Do In Bongolia - out on Electric Cowbell Records

Electric Cowbell presents 101 Things To Do In Bongolia
Electric Cowbell presents 101 Things To Do In Bongolia
(CD/Digital) Electric Cowbell ECR701, 2011-06-28

Electric Cowbell has been releasing 45rpm vinyl records out of Brooklyn, New York, since the summer of 2010. 101 Things To Do In Bongolia is a compilation CD that documents the label's first batch of singles plus includes remixes and bonus tracks. This release captures the funky and eclectic all inclusive genre-bending that help define the label making 101 Things To Do In Bongolia a kind of mix-tape love letter from Brooklyn. This album is filled with rare gems that are finally getting exposed to the world outside of the vinyl-only realm. The sounds are completely fresh with a lot of odd elements that make for an interesting listen but also yield funky grooves for the dance floor. Stuart Bogie (Antibalas, Iron & Wine) & his group Superhuman Happiness showcases the talents of his cohorts from Antibalas and recordings from Dave Sitek's now defunct Stay Gold studios in Brooklyn where TV On The Radio's sound was forged. Truth & Soul Records (Amy Winehouse, Lee Fields, Aloe Blacc) production team Clay Holley and Jeff Dynamite team up with New York's only active boogaloo band Spanglish Fly for the track Let My People Bugalú. Lovers of the infamous Ethiopiques series from the Buda label of France will rejoice in Boston's Debo Band as they deliver their take on the bass-driven rhythms and exotic funk of 60's & 70's-era Ethiopia. Guitarists of seminal punk legends Black Flag and co-founder of SST Records, Greg Ginn clocks in with his first single in years that gets a mash-up by electronic eccentric ENE. Sierra Leone-born Sahr Ngaujah star and lead of the hit Broadway musical based on the life of Fela Kuti Fela! teams up with Superhuman Happiness and is featured on 2 tracks on this album: String Theory and Gravity.

Los Ribereños - Silbando - out on Electric Cowbell Records

Los Riberenos Silbando
Los Ribereños - Silbando
(7") Electric Cowbell ECR 010, 2010-12-07

Very excited about this one! Barbès Records has exclusively licensed Electric Cowbell Records a song from the new Roots of Chicha ll complilation. Chicha is essentially a sort of psychedelic cumbia-based music from the Amazon basin in Peru. Incessant twangy surf guitar playing montunos alongside propulsive, percolating percussion is the modus operandi of a chicha group. On side A we have the hauntingly beautiful track by Los Ribereños Silbando that gets a tasty remix on the B-side by Brooklyn's Greenwood Rhythm Coalition for NYC Trust. Los Ribereños, led by John Beny, is another Peruvian 60s band which specialized in a mostly Cuban repertoire but gave it what we can, in retrospect, call a chicha twist. A the time of this recording, chicha was getting a little more syncretic, with an occasional Andean flavor, but guaracha (a mid-20th century Cuban style of music) remained its strongest element....and this chicha-infused guaracha 45 is destined to be a world-class psych burner classic!

Various - Jazz & Milk Breaks Vol. 3
(12"/Digital) Jazz & Milk JM010, 2009-06-26

Jazz & Milk enters the third round with their highly successful Jazz & Milk Breaks series. Six individual tracks with various influences ranging from Jazz, Funk, Latin to Afro and percussive Beats have already attracted a lot of attention on the Munich Jazz & Milk dance floors and finally made their way onto this versatile vinyl release. The records starts off with Innocent Sorcerers' very own Envee who has turned Pinnawela's tune You Can Dance into a wonderful and swinging jazz dance anthem. The track is followed by percussion maestro César Granados. His unique and vintage version of Dizzie Gillespie's latin-jazz classic Manteca is a true dance floor filler. The Snip's double bass driven downtempo bomb El Boom rounds off side A! On the flipside The Jivers, a new production duo out of Barcelona present a clubby jazz-hit called Do What featuring the unique voice of Anqui. Label head Dusty also joins the compilation with the remix of The Boogoos' afro-funk track The Journey / Ghana '74. Finally Greenwood Rhythm Coalition from New York's great Names You Can Trust imprint deliver a brilliant DJ bomb called Cotonou Caravan.

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Latin Dance Party

Paris DJs Soundstem - Latin Dance Party (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-02-11 What started as a 21st Century Latin selection ended like this: latin + dance = party! As usual, we tried to dig deep into our (latin) stacks, bringing a rare Michael Ray (from the Sun Ra Arkestra) track from 10 years ago featuring a blistering solo from Trey Anastasio (Phish), a killer Irakere cover from Grupo Fantasma, some nice bootie business from Me&You (Tru Thoughts), a jazz stormer from The Hi-Fly Orchestra... and many more supergroovy latin goodies! [comment faire?/how to?]...

Paris DJs Soundsystem - 21st Century Latin Vol.3

Paris DJs Soundstem - 21st Century Latin Vol.3 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-07 Latin music has always been a favorite for us. We could talk for hours about Deodato, Marcos Valle and so many others. We even managed to produce an 'Electronic Bossa & Psychedelic Soul Samba' album a few years ago with Captain Détendu... Our '21st Century Latin' series is in the same vein of latinized electronics, latin dub, electro-colombian psychedelics, latin jazz & funk... We're diggin' here! Enjoy those new latin grooves from Germany (Mr Confuse, Bahama Soul Club), Spain...
