After the critical success of Everyone I Ever Met, their debut album for Counter Records, Spokes return with latest single. 3 4 5, the kind of burst of euphoric "choral indie" (Clash) that had Q proclaim that "Spokes seem destined to make waves". A building, emotional epic that began life as an "acoustic shanty", it showcases once again the unique aesthetic and wide-eyed seriousness that make Spokes stand out so far from a drab crowd. There's even a director's cut of the tune, giving full rein to the band's emotional playing and weighing in at almost seven minutes! Remixing duties are kicked off by Grasscut, who give the beat a bit of electronic snap while Marcus Odair cuts loose in Jaco Pastorius mode on the bass. Liverpool's Capac give the melody more space, cloaking it in melancholy and slatherings of sub-bass. Hiatus takes the bucolic earthiness of the original and transplanting it to dark, damp city streets.

Grasscut return with The Door In The Wall, a further heightening of their electro-pastoral psychedelia, which runs Krautrock up against the Brians (Wilson and Eno) and the non-conformist spirit of Robert Wyatt. Remixes come from Bibio (Warp) and PRDCTV (Ninja Tune).

The first single from Bonobo's forthcoming new album (as yet untitled and due for release early next year) is the haunting, beautiful The Keeper. Featuring the incomparable vocal talents of Andreya Triana, the video for the single is already a hit on YouTube, now the audio is being released in all its full-res magnificence. Coming on like a cross between early Massive Attack and classic soul-jazz, The Keeper is the sound of an artist completely in control of his resources, an artist with the confidence to do a little brilliantly. He coaxes a fantastic, characterful performance from Triana and makes music which is both melancholy and effortlessly uplifting. Remixes come, he offers the neatest d&b re-working of the original, and labelmates Grasscut, who strip things back to faintly sinister musicbox atmospherics.

Welcome to the world of Grasscut: sweeping melody, epic build, rain, dislocation, glitched-out psych-pastoralism, beauty and beats. Inspired by and continuing the bold tradition of English transcendentalism, this is music that could serve as a contemporary soundtrack to long-lost films by Lindsay Anderson or Powell and Pressburger. Grasscut are Andrew Phillips and Marcus O'Dair. Phillips is an award-winning film and television composer with over one hundred screen credits. O'Dair, whom he met in their hometown of Brighton, is a double bassist, keyboards player and general noisenik. Together, suited and bespectacled, they are a kind of Gilbert and George of electronic music.
