Martyn - Ghost People - out on Brainfeeder

Martyn Ghost People
Martyn - Ghost People
(CD/2xLP/Download) Brainfeeder, 2011-10-10

One artist Martyn's united with time and time again is Brainfeeder leader Flying Lotus. A close friend within whom he's always found creative alliance, the two decided to join forces on Martyn's sophomore album this September. With Ghost People, Martyn pulls Brainfeeder out of L.A. and straight into the fluorescent bounce of West London's 2-step, massaging the darker edge of Croydon's dub roots, and D'n'B's otherworldly and sci-fi sonics, while simultaneously moving through the grit of Detroit's mechanic grooves, and into the freewheeling vibe of Berghain. Yet, all the while, he maintains Brainfeeder's spirit of wild experimentalism and - as the title of his We Are You In The Future suggests - sense of futurism at the forefront, with each of the album's unpredictable tracks. "I want to be known as someone that always surprises. I think some people have started to accept that. That's my favorite position to be in." says Martyn...

Thundercat - The Golden Age Of Apocalypse - out on Brainfeeder

Thundercat The Golden Age Of Apocalypse
Thundercat - The Golden Age Of Apocalypse
(CD/LP/Download) Brainfeeder BF023/BFCD023/BFDNL023, 2011-08-29

If indeed "you blows who you is", as Louis Armstrong once famously said, then Stephen Bruner's bass is a mainline to the soul of a man whose DNA was transcribed from the stars onto staff paper. His Flying Lotus-produced debut, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, offers both stone-cold skill and uncanny astrality, picking up where the pair left off on 2010's Cosmogramma and further distilling the jazz current running through that landmark Lotus release. A longtime contributor to others' albums, Bruner, aka Thundercat, better known as Suicidal Tendencies' bassist, is accompanied by an impressive cast ranging from Erykah Badu to members of Sa-Ra and J*DaVeY, to pianist Austin Peralta and his own Grammy-winning brother, drummer Ronald Bruner, Jr. Still, the end result is unmistakably a Thundercat record - a lush and magical document combining classic jazz fusion, futurist electronic strains and timeless musical seeking. Gonjasufi - The Caliph's Tea Party - out on Warp Records

Gonjasufi The Caliph Tea Party
Gonjasufi - The Caliph's Tea Party
(CD/LP/Digital) Warp Records WARPCD206/WARPLP206, 2010-10-04

It's a tricky thing, re-working a completely unique and peerless piece of music. It is made even trickier when the personality behind the original music is so vivid and otherworldly that it is almost sure to continue to cast it's long shadow over whatever new form is chosen for it. Of course the questions of whether or not to remix Gonjasufi's classic A Sufi and A Killer arose, but with that voice and those songs, it was never going to fail. Of course the fact that Gonja had made fans out of quite a few incredibly talented artists didn't hurt either. So, The Caliph's Tea Party was slowly summoned to life...

Andreya Triana - Lost Where I Belong

Andreya Triana Lost Where I Belong
Andreya Triana - Lost Where I Belong (incl. Flying Lotus Remix)
(Download) Ninja Tune ZENDNLS254, 2010-02-08

Welcome, please, Andreya Triana. The singer whose past credits include work with Mr Scruff, Flying Lotus, Theo Parrish and Bonobo releases the first single from her forthcoming debut album, Lost Where I Belong. "Lost Where I Belong", like the rest of the album which will follow, is produced by Simon Green aka Bonobo, this track being co-written with Fink. The album came about before Bonobo and Triana worked on a track for his lastest album and ended up touring the US together. A beautiful, subtle slice of jazz and folk-inflected soul, Lost Where I Belong is, Andreya explains, a microcosm of what her album is all about. "The underlying theme of the song is even though we can strongly and clearly know what our purpose is in life we can still get a bit lost along the way and struggle sometimes". Bonobo builds subtle live strings, brass and effortless-but-understated drum work around the gorgeousness of Triana's voice and lush harmonies. The remix comes from sometime associate and collaborator Flying Lotus who takes the original vocal out into the (LA) galaxy - all space fizzes and filtered drums - before Andreya roots it right back down again with an acoustic version which shows just how affecting her voice is, with Fink and Bonobo both lending a hand on guitar and double bass. No diva-histrionics here - just an attempt to let the melody and lyrics do the talking.

Thavius Beck - Go Away

Thavius Beck Go Away
Thavius Beck - Go Away
(Download) Big Dada BDDNL156, 2009-10-26

Go/Away is the first single from Thavius Beck's first solo album for Big Dada, but he's a name you should already know. Beck hooks up a trademark beat which bounces like a bomb on a trampoline whilst coming at the listener with a whole choir of disembodied voices and enough electronic squelch for the most demanding tech-head. Over it, Beck shows his skills as a lyricist, his calm, well-modulated, warm voice belying the anger and thoughtfulness of his lyrics. Away, runs euphoric vocal pads up against orchestral stabs and more lyrical science. Remix duties for the two tunes are dealt with by Flying Lotus and Offshore. A true renaissance man of hip hop, Thavius Beck sees no musical boundaries other than the ones he has already left behind.
