The Liberators - Paris DJs Mix
Monday 23 May 2011, 17:53
The Liberators - Paris DJs Mix (MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) 2011-05-23 This is quite unique: an afrofunk/afrobeat band from Australia signed to an Italian label!!! Well African grooves are now everywhere and people who never heard of Fela must feel quite a huge lack or awareness in music. Knowledgeness or not, here's an opportunity to discover what's Afrobeat all about over there in Sydney, with a few tracks from The Liberators self-titled album interlaced with a selection of their influences: Sir Victor Uwaifo, Fela, Ebo Taylor, Dan Satch, The Daktaris, Antibalas...You can buy The...
Seun Anikulapo Kuti - World People 01
Monday 18 April 2011, 03:50 1
Seun Anikulapo Kuti - World People #01 (MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) 2011-04-18 Seun Anikulapo Kuti, the youngest son of Fela, is now in his late 20s. He grew up in Kalukaluta, Nigeria, and we asked him about his musical background during the 80s and the 90s… "It was all about Afrobeat! Traditional music also, and reggae. Bob Marley of course, Peter Tosh too, he was a huge favorite of mine.", says Seun. He made this selection for Paris DJs as a snapshot of what he's listening to these days: dancehall, hip hop, afrobeat, reggae, and a Ray Charles classic… Seun Kuti is currently...
Rare interview with Fela Kuti found in charity shop in London
Thursday 25 February 2010, 14:24

Feal Kuti - Rare radio interview found in a charity shop
by Duncan Ballantyne, Label Manager, Soundway Records
"Having recently picked up some old reel to reel tapes at a Help the Aged shop round the corner from my house i was pretty astonished to hear this recording of Fela being interviewed in London just before he went on this major tour with Ginger Baker. Recognise the song in the background? That is the lead track on Soundway's latest album, although a version. We’re particularly fond of the delivery from the presenter but not so keen on his lack of English decorum when it comes to his opinions on Fela’s vocals. A very bizarre coincidence but a happy one and hopefully this will amuse and entertain – check the rare original version of the track on Nigeria Afrobeat Special".
Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration Of Fela Kuti

Various - Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration Of Fela Kuti
(4x10" boxset/CD) Now-Again/Stones Throw NA50566, 2010-02-23
Fela's music, and that of his organization inspired musicians across the global village when Afro-Beat was new and novel. This compilation focuses on the music Fela inspired – whether by fellow Nigerians recording alongside him in the early 70s, neighbors in Ghana, then-modern Colombian cumbia ensembles inspired by the man who injected a new feel into the Yoruban rhythms that formed cumbia's base, Trinidadian steel bands or the select few organizations left that have maintained Fela's fury in the new millennium. Compiler Egon has written extensive liner notes – and sourced never before seen Fela photos and other ephemera - for this project, included in the hardbound book that contains the CD and in a large-format booklet in the 4 x 10” vinyl box set.
Pax Nicholas & The Nettey Family - Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef

Pax Nicholas & The Nettey Family - Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef
(CD/LP) Daptone Records DAP017, 2009-09-01
Convinced of his skills as a drummer and singer, in 1971 Fela Anikulapo Kuti made Nicholas Addo-Nettey a full member of Africa 70 on congas and backing vocals. While playing with Fela and recording on all his releases between 1971 and 1978, Nicholas always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef in 1973. Na Teef... is a heavy afrofunk set, recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were also set to tape. Fela was not amused when he heard how strong the album was, reportedly telling Addo-Nettey "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!". And so it was; despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years. The story would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner, a true vinyl digger who found a copy somewhere in West Africa, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records.
PLEASE SOMEONE SEND ME A COPY OF THIS PLEASE!!
