Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again EP - out on Communion Records

Michael Kiwanuka Home Again EP
Michael Kiwanuka - Home Again EP
(10"/Digital) Communion Records, 2012-01-01

This third EP from British Soul singer and new sensation Michael Kiwanuka isn't as catchy as the first two previous ones, Tell Me A Tale EP and I'm Getting Ready EP, but the quality isn't lowering either. His soulful voice is one of the most interesting we've heard this year in the 'retro soul' current trend. His passionate lyrics seem simple but come straight from the heart, with laidback folk'n'soul dressings, they rank among the most moving we've heard all year. Expect shivers to the soul, no less. And again the production from Paul Butler (The Bees) fits like a glove...
The album, also titled Home Again will be out march 26th on Communion Records.

The Soul Rebels Brass Band - Unlock Your Mind - out now on Rounder Records

The Soul Rebels Brass Band Unlock Your Mind
The Soul Rebels Brass Band - Unlock your mind
(CD/Digital), Rounder Records, 2011-10-17

Unlock your Mind is the first Soul Rebels Brass Band's release on an important label, independent americana record company Rounder. The NOLa* brass band is well-know for its powerful live performances (more than 250 gigs per year!), but it's not so easy to capture that stamina and strengh on a studio record. Fortunately it's not the case with this new album produced by Big Easy music-specialist Scott Billington (Irma Thomas, Dirty Dozen Brass Band...). With friends and guests such as Cyril Neville, Trombone Shorty, Galactic's Ben Ellman and Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli, the eight-piece band delivers a hot party-style gumbo. Both new compositions and covers (Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams and Stevie Wonder' Living For the City) include the classical second line funk recipe but also latin rhythms (the superb Showtime), hip-hop, reggae, and everything that makes New Orleans so special... Well, if you want to know what the true NOLa-ttitude is, you can't miss that record.
(* NOLa is an acronym of New Orleans, Louisiana : New Orleans, La)

Shawn Lee's Incredible Tabla Band - Tabla Rock - out on Ubiquity Records

Tabla Rock Shawn Lee Incredible Tabla Band
Shawn Lee's Incredible Tabla Band - Tabla Rock
(CD/LP/Digital) Ubiquity Records UR293, 2012-01-17

Tabla Rock is a new and epic episode in Shawn Lee's mental saga. Do we have to mention that this album is his third release in six months? Further to his Hits the Hits series, the unpredictable funkateer covers Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band's Bongo Rock in its entirety - plus two more tracks of the band's second album. And he goes berserk one more time, for he does this cult-record in an Indian fun(ky) style, with incredible tabla taking the place of bongo (thanks to Prithpal Rajput aka 'Cyber' of the Asian Dub Foundation) and heavy keys (thanks to Style Council keyboard-man Mick Talbot on Apache). DIY-man Shawn Lee plays all the other instruments as usual, truly everything from drums, percussions, bass, sitar, tampura, to guitars, Indian banjo, etc., producing an unbelievably faifhtful rendition of the original. The current superstar of Soul Lee Fields is back with a new track, You’re the Kind of Girl, the first single extracted from his upcoming new album A Faithful Man, to be released march 13th 2012 on Truth & Soul Records. Lee describes the bluesy and soulful You're The Kind of Girl as "a song that honors women because they should be honored. When a person meets that special someone, everything is easy from that point. True love is not a hard thing. When you meet the right person, it just happens." Download MP3...

Galactic - Carnivale Electricos - out February 21st 2012 on Anti- Records

Galactic Carnivale Electricos
Galactic - Carnivale Electricos
(CD/LP/Digital) ANTI-, 2012-02-21

Two years ago we left Galactic with Ya-Ka-May, their heaviest album to date, followed by a long, successful tour. The band did cameos in HBO show TREME and composed a few tracks for PS3 video game Infamous 2 (located in New Orleans, naturellement). Stanton Moore released a record with his trio and another mighty one with Garage à Trois, among other things. Ben Ellman helped Trombone Shorty launch his career with Orleans Avenue, producing his two first records on Verve. So with everyone so busy, a new album this quickly was the last thing we expected. We were wrong. Galactic is now 18 years-old, and it's a strong and creative teenager who can't help partying all night away while Western world - at least its financial and capitalistic side - teeters on the brink. Here comes the brand-new album Carnivale Electricos, to be released on Mardi Gras 2012...

The Bombay Royale - Sote Sote Adhi Raat / Solla Solla Enna Perumai - out on Hope Street Recordings

The Bombay Royale - Sote Sote Adhi Raat / Solla Solla Enna Perumai
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS004, 2011-08

I don't really know what this is. Obscure Bollywood tracks reworked for the funk/disco/breaks audience by Australian funksters? New tracks produced to sound like funky vintage Indian Blaxploitation? It doesn't really matter since the resulting recordings are just plain amazing. The A-side Sote Sote Adhi Raat is just bonkers. An absolute killer Bolywood disco track that needs to be put in all decent DJ bags, it sounds as if The Mackrosoft were born in India! Get this 45 before it sells out!!

The Cactus Channel - Pepper Snaker / The Dap - out on Hope Street Recordings

The Cactus Channel Pepper SnakeThe Cactus Channel The Dap
The Cactus Channel - Pepper Snaker / The Dap
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS003, 2011-01

The Cactus Channel are a ten piece high school funk orchestra from Melbourne, with an average age of sixteen. A biographical fact that's hard to believe since these kids are "burning down original funk breaks and breaking down funk originals with a musical maturity far beyond their years", as the press release says. Their Pepper Snake is indeed funky as hell, while catchy and melodious as candy. "Irresistible" would be the exact definition of the feeling one can get with this track, cos' it's gonna be hard to not groove on this one. The b-side, The Dap, is a cover from New Orleans trumpeter Warren 'Porgy' Jones. With its irresistibly uplifting groove, full horn section and instrumentation (guitar, bass, organ and percussion), it's quite unclassifiable, between afro-pop and southern soul. AND another classic Molesting Laura track!! Very recommended!

The PutBacks - Busted / Set Me Free - out on Hope Street Recordings

The PutBacks BustedThe Putbacks Set Me Free
The PutBacks - Busted / Set Me Free
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS002, 2010-04

April 2010 was on of my last months as a partner of the Superfly Records store, and I distinctly remember listening to this marvelous 7 inch and ordering a few copies for the shop... The A-side, Busted start as retro-swinging as a funky Bo Diddley instrumental, before adding some deep breaks, guitar choruses and finally... a singalong verse for all the heads of the world: "I'm... so busted"!! B-side Set Me Free is a soul/jazz instrumental cover of a mid-60s track from The Kinks and deserves a rightful place in a Molesting Laura mix: we'll try not to forget it next time we're busting the lady (who's the opposite of 'busted', by the way!). And now we're all waiting for a PutBacks full length...

Chantal Mitvalsky / The PutBacks - Friend or Foe / Diamond Cutter
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS001, 2009-09

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to the A-side of this first 45 from Australian label Hope Street Recordings is The Bamboos, of course, with their high-octane retro-funk featuring amazing & soulful guest vocals, may it be from Alice Russell, Kylie Auldist or Randa Khamis. The PutBacks are the band responsible for the deep funk appearing on this 7 inch release and their instrumental on the b-side could be the theme of many TV shows. This is the promise of a radiant future for Hope Street Recordings!

Various - Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party - out on Tramp Records

Santa Funk and Soul Christmas Party
Various - Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party
(Gatefold LP/CD/Digital) Tramp Records TR-9013, 2011-11-28

The Christmas album is a concept many artists and labels have tried to achieve, and most of the time those attempts fall flat. With our own Xmas compilation (Noelectro) released in 2004 on T.I.M.E.C. and 7 annual Xmas mixes on Paris DJs in 6 years (yep, there's a catch), we felt we had gained quite some expertise on the subject. This year our friends at Tramp Records in Germany (yes, that cool label run by Tobias Kirmayer who we invited for a superb Freestyle mix more than 4 years ago) have taken the matter in hand and have just released a very funky xmas compilation, Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party, with a selection by record collector and DJ Jan Kohlmeyer of 13 raw funk-soul rare and hard-to-find Xmas tracks. An absolute must-have if you're a xmas music collector like us! And an excellent reason for inviting Jan Kohlmeyer and Tramp Records for our annual xmas mix, which we'll publish tomorrow evening (dec. 6). The CD booklet and LP sleeve contain scans of all the 45s featured in this compilaton, as well as liner notes to each song. The vinyl comes with a gatefold cover and is limited to 500 copies. A gatefold vinyl edition of rare funk/soul xmas music released in 2011: happiness is that simple. (Djouls)
