Papa Mali's latest album documents his pre-Katrina New Orleans summit meeting with some of the city's most celebrated players (Henry Butler, Kirk Joseph, and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux) brought together with one request: Do your thing! More of a seance than a recording session, spirits weave through the air like curls of smoke, conjuring visions of snake handlers and tent revivals, spy boys and street parades, proceeding with a broke-leg swagger to a place that's less about being funky and more about being Southern. Other guests: Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians, Victoria Williams, Chuck Prophet & JJ Grey (of Mofro). This enhanced CD also contains feature-length documentary video.

Nous vous présentions en Novembre dernier, disque par disque et MP3s à l'appui, toute la discographie d'un de nos spécialistes es-funk préféré, Robert Walter, clavier des Greyboy Allstars, entre autres. Et bien sachez que cette discographie vient de s'enrichir d'un disque de Noël, "In A Holiday Groove", sorti sur l'excellentissime label de Dan Prothero, Fog City, et un sampler de 4 minutes est disponible en stream intégral sur le site du label. Attention, il y a un piège: une écoute de ces quelques bouts de grooves organ-funky donne irrémédiablement envie de choper le vinyle, alors que le disque n'existe qu'en CD, et encore, on ne peut l'acheter que sur le site du label! Les salauds.

Mofro - "Frog Giggin"
Encore un superbe album produit par l'illustre Dan Prothero sur son label Fog City Records. Toujours aussi authentique que groovy, cette fois Dan a signé un groupe du Nord de la Floride, Mofro, plus roots que jamais. En gros, on tient là le blues-funk marécageux que G. Love essaie de jouer depuis des années, ni plus ni moins. Le track présenté ici, "Frog giggin", extrait de leur album sorti en 2001 "Blackwater", plutôt représentatif de l'album quoiqu'un peu court (2 minutes), mérite largement le détour ne serait-ce que pour son gimmick de grenouille...
