Fresh from a tour supporting the legendary DJ Shadow with his band Stateless, kidkanevil is back with another razor-sharp 12" to splice up the dancefloor. Yes, our perma-beanied beat technician's called in the big guns on MC duties in the form of Quannum's Lateef The Truthspeaker, Yarah Bravo & UK heavyweight Lotek (Roots Manuva)..

First up, Lateef takes things into '5th Gear' with a tale of a hot night's dancefloor liasons, backed by One Self's Little Miss B. This low-slung groover is guaranteed to get the bootys shakin' as the killer flute slices through the tribal rhythm, as hypnotic as the Truthspeaker's conquest. This tune's got back!

As if that wasn't enough, we've got 'ASBO', a super-fl y track laden with bass as heavy as the wit Lotek spits on the flow ("He thinks algebra is a terrorist cell"). This is social commentary that'll slap a grin right across your noddin' noggin. The 12" is fi nished off with a remix of kidk's awesome debut single 'Kranium Rock' by the man like Diesler. Review :
I must admit I never heard any Kidkanevil track before, but if Miss Yarah Bravo accepted to sing for the guy then talent musn't be far cos' One Self's lady's got plenty of (good) taste. And you won't be disappointed by this firing collaboration, kinda tribalisticly minimal, with nearly reggaton banging drums, a funky flute, cool breaks and scratched stylings. The B-side is more in the Mr Scruff/Kid Koala vein, with old school jazz leanings, funny samples, nonsense and more scratching. That's two good reasons to get the vinyl for your DJ Bag, while we start waiting for a supacool album hopefully... Djouls

Today's Mathematics - Let It Go (The Remix EP)

Review :
After years of broken-this, house-that, techno-some and downbeat instrumentals, UK producers who want to last in the music world are now mostly hooked on songs. And we won't complain when we get the nicests of melodies and harmonies back again into the fold. But the songs in question may also get the 'remix' treatment in many form afterwards, like on this broken acid electro-soul version of Leeds' Today's Mathematics "Let It Go", by their mainman Cedar, or its instrumental version, perfect for horizontal purposes. Nostalgia 77, from Brighton finest Tru Thoughts, chose to re-record entirely the vocal parts and produced an entirely different version of the same track. Reminiscent of Portishead's trip-hoppy ambiances without the manierism, the song rises to an angelic level, in a laid-back soul jazz vibe drenched into hip hop culture. I've just got two word for this: "Gimme more". To conclude, the original version is also featured, which lets forecast some very interesting and smoky acid-folk live shows...Djouls
