Paris DJs Soundsystem Pomp and Circumstance

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Pomp & Circumstance

This one is mainly a warm-up mix in black and white (hence the title and artwork), presenting contemporary and international mento, ska, reggae & dub with young blood and legends. Lee Scratch Perry's got the final and mystic word with his under-exposed last release Rise Again (superbly crafted by Bill Laswell, with Steven Bernstein on trumpet and Bernie Worrell on keys), a title which sounds like a symbol of his great renaissance. But it could also fit The Jolly Boys Great Expectation comeback, a band christened by hellraiser Errol Flynn himself while he was living in Jamaica. Both music...

Ye Mighty - Fuse - out on First Word Records

Yeh Mighty Fuse
Ye Mighty - Fuse
(7"/Download) First Word Records FW78, 2011-11-21

Ye Mighty return with a brand new single to round off a fantastic 2011 for the band. Following on from their debut album Beyond Cairo the duo are back with a cover of one of the biggest underground tracks of recent years, Hudson Mohawke’s Fuse. Replicating the memorable synth hook with stunning horns and pounding live drums, Ye Mighty have created a guaranteed dancefloor destroyer - adding their own idiosyncratic twist to a bonafide modern classic. The band's unique fusion of Eastern scales, hip hop drums and futuristic synths creates a sound that bridges the gap between the original HudMo track and the classic Mulatu & Fela vibes that influence much of the Ye Mighty output. On the flip of this limited 7", Optimist vs Realist is a straight up afrobeat groover, completing a must-have record for any discerning DJ.

(CD/LP/Download) First Word Records FW60, 2011-07-25

The International Rudeboy is back! Since leaving home at the age of 15 to become a sound engineer, Wayne 'Lotek' Bennett has been on a quest to hone his interpretation of the sounds that he grew up with - a journey that has taken him to all corners of the globe. From festivals in Czech Republic to clubs in Japan and all points in between Lotek has forged his own path as a ska revivalist, culminating in his debut album on First Word, International Rudeboy. Whilst some may know Lotek from his early hip hop with Roots Manuva, (both as a producer and as musical director of his now legendary live show), his Lotek Hifi project on Big Dada or even his recent work as the creative force behind the acoustic soul of Speech Debelle's Mercury Prize winning album, it is reggae music that has always been the foundation of his sound.

Ye Mighty - Beyond Cairo - out on First Word Records

Lotek Beyond Cairo
Ye Mighty - Beyond Cairo
(LP/Download) First Word Records FW59, 2011-07-11

First Word Records are proud to introduce Ye Mighty, alias Max Wheeler (formerly of Dirty Diggers) and Richard "Dutch" Halligan, the latest product of the incredibly prolific Brighton music scene, that has brought the world the likes of Quantic, Bonobo, Nostalgia 77 and Alice Russell to name but a few. Ye Mighty met through recording in a shared studio: Dutch working with Tom Caruana (the man behind the much-lauded Wu-Tang vs The Beatles album) downstairs and Max's studio based on the floor above. Max heard horns drifiting up and Dutch heard drums banging down and when they eventually swapped notes and put the two together they realised they might have a project on their hands. The music developed organically, tested out regularly on the Producer's Retreat sound system, and what you hear on Beyond Cairo is the result of this unhurried approach, fusing ethio-jazz with hip hop breaks. For fans of Mulatu, The Heliocentrics, The Lions and more.

The Simonsound Reverse Engineering
The Simonsound - Reverse Engineering
(CD/LP/Download) First Word Records FW51CD, 2010-05-10

Reverse Engineering is the debut album from The Simonsound, an intriguing variety of sounds, including '50s and '60s-inspired space music, mood music for film and TV, haunting vocal tracks, and switched-on cover versions of classics realised on the Moog synthesiser. Made of duo Simon James and Matt Ford (aka DJ Format) the album is already getting series support from across the globe. Gilles Peterson is a big fan, playing tracks from the album on his 'All Winners' show and inviting the duo in to record a session at the illustrious BBC Maida Vale studios for broadcast this May on Radio One. Other fans include Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope and DJ Spinna, who says: "Reverse Engineering is a refreshing mesh of the past, present and the future. It's like Mort Garson rocking shell toe Adidas with fat laces blasting into the galaxy in a funky space ship. This record will remain in the crates forever. Don't sleep!".

Ariya Astrobeat Orchestra - out on First Word Records

Ariya Astrobeat Orchestra
Ariya Astrobeat Orchestra - Ariya Astrobeat Orchestra
(CD/LP/Download) First Word Records, 2010-11-15

From Lagos to Leeds with Love... Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra formed in late 2007 when members of the kidkanevil live show and First Word stalwarts Homecut began a series of late night afrobeat sessions at Leeds Jazz venue Sela Bar. It was out of these jam sessions that the 8 piece band was born, combining their love of afrobeat with their appreciation of the space jazz pioneers of the 70's and the free jazz trailblazers of the 60's, coupled with a hefty nod towards James Brown. The album includes nine original compositions as well as debut single Crosstown Traffic, a firing cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic. From the infectious horn stabs of opener African Kings to the hi-life influenced Big Grammar and the languid groove of Same Same this is an album of real consistency and quality. "Fela would be proud!" said DK & DJ Food from Ninja Tune; "Hell yeah...a full on afrobeat assault. Supa hot!" said Mad Mats from Raw Fusion & GAMM.

Mike L - On A Columbo Tip - out on First word Records

Mike-L On a Columbo Tip
Mike L - On A Columbo Tip
(CD/LP/Download) First Word Records FW36, 2010-10-25

First Word are proud to present the debut album from Mike-L, the fantastic On A Columbo Tip. Following on from other First Word releases this year, Mike has crafted an album that shares the dusty-fingered, crate-digging sound of Herma Puma with the unashamedly retro style of The Simonsound's Reverse Engineering. Mike's been with First Word since day one, winning over fans with his dusty-grooved hip hop and funk production. Eye Of The Storm was one of the first 12's the label released back in 2005, and was a defining release for First Word. A veteran of six DMC finals Mike has managed the seemingly rare feat of combining jaw-dropping turntablist skills with genuine beat-making talent, crafting a 15-track opus that takes in Madlib-style Hip Hop, Cut Chemist-influenced breakbeat funk and the eerie soundscapes of RJD2.
