Strut Records, in association with Fania, are proud to announce the 40th Anniversary Edition of the landmark feature film that captured New York's legendary early '70s Latin music scene at its zenith, Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa). Filmed around a live all-star concert by the Fania All-Stars at one of promoter Ralph Mercado's fantastically popular Thursday night jams at the Cheetah, the film transports the viewer right back to a heady night on August 26, 1971. At the time, there had been little documentation of the burgeoning salsa scene in New York, despite its massive popularity. Video was still crude and film was expensive to shoot. However, Fania founder Jerry Masucci had a vision of taking New York Latin music from the barrio to the world, and put the money up to make the movie. The result is pure dynamite. The salsa of the early '70s had it all - Africa, the Caribbean, the Spanish language, the technical skills of jazz, the kinetic push and pull of great dance music, brilliant improvisations by both singers and drummers, and, most importantly, a community right behind it - mostly, but not entirely, Puerto Rican. Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa) will be released as a 3-disc set: the film DVD, packaged together with Live at the Cheetah, Vol.1 & Vol.2 featuring the music from the film across two CDs, including previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Hammock House - Africa Caribe - Produced & Mixed by Joaquin "Joe" Claussell - out on Fania Records

Hammock House Africa Caribe Joaquin Joe Claussell
Hammock House - Africa Caribe - Produced & Mixed by Joaquin "Joe" Claussell
(2xCD) Fania Records, 2011-05-17

Produced and mixed by the legendary Joaquin "Joe" Claussell, Hammock House 'Africa Caribe' is more than just remixes of Fania's back catalog. It's a stunning two-disc album with each track approached and assembled differently, each on its own terms. The first disc features nine classic Fania tunes from Lou Perez, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto and more all re-worked with the Joe Claussell touch. The second disc is a live continuous mix by Claussell, but not like your average DJ mixing one track into another Joe's states his goal for the mix-CD was to create an epic journey that begins in the Motherland (Africa) and moves to New York. The project is a perfect marriage between old and new, a fresh take on classic sounds from the Fania archives. Joe says of the project, "I wanted to do a futuristic mix where stories are being created with soundscapes and tapestries, and segues work as introductions to each story. I wanted to create bridges through different rhythms, so I worked with my brother Jose, as well as other percussionists and musicians in the studio, to create parts that flow between. I mixed it live with four CD players, effects, and reel-to-reel, then took it into the studio and tightened up some of the levels through editing. I wanted to mix it live so you get more of a human feel from it, to stay true to the texture of this music. And I really wanted it to reflect on the process of working on this whole project. Looking back, I'm honored and grateful to get to work on such historical music - and music I grew up with."

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Do The Tighten Up!

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Do The Tighten Up! (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-06-11 Tighten Up was a summer 1968 number one R&B and pop hit single by Archie Bell & the Drells from Houston, Texas. It sold a million copies by May 1968. The song described an accompanying dance that the band had invented, also called the Tighten Up. It's one of the most addictive early funk tracks ever, and has been covered and played by everyone from Maceo Parker to The Bamboos since then. Here's a 30mn blended selection of our favourite funk and latin versions... [comment faire?/how to?]...

Entre classiques et raretés (l'album qu'il a fait avec le brésilien Solon Gonçalves à Paris!), "Ça Ka Zouké" sur le son des Antilles!...
