The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble - Mr. Machine out on !K7 Records

Brandt Brauer and Frick Mr Machine
The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble - Mr. Machine
(CD/LP/Digital) !K7 Records, 2011-10-24

One year ago German wizards Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer & Paul Frick (aka Brandt Brauer & Frick) published an impressive acoustic-electro album called You Make Me Real (!K7 Records). Somewhere between Steve Reich, John Cage, drum and bass and deep house, Brandt Brauer & Frick have created a unique sound, sophisticated and danceable, made only with acoustic and classical instruments. But this music played at three in studio was meant to get a more ambitious treatment on stage with a ten-piece ensemble, as Paul Frick revealed in our interview. And now they are back with a perfect rendition of this on their new release, The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble's Mr. Machine (!K7 Records). New versions of You Make Me Real are featured, as well as great covers (Emika's Pretend with the new Ninja Tune's Berlin-based sensation as a guest vocalist, and a version of Agnes Obel's On Powdered Ground) for the most hypnotic record of 2011.

Emika - Emika - out on Ninja Tune

Emika
Emika - Emika
(2xLP/CD/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN156/ZENCD156/ZENDNL156, 2011-10-03

Today's modern day composer can work in many different areas of sound with one click of a mouse. This is the single most influential factor in Emika’s artistic development. After years of musical education and having an entire studio in a box as her instrument, she feels it’s her duty to music to develop the art of song writing and recording on every level possible. A sound designer and composer who writes and records for herself from her bedroom in Berlin, her instruments are DIY soft synths, her voice, piano, and samples. Already highly-rated by everyone from Mary-Anne Hobbs to Thom Yorke and covered by media outlets as varied Resident Advisor and The Guardian, the release of this, her eponymous debut album, is awaited with considerable anticipation.

Emika - Pretend / Professional Loving - out on Ninja Tune

Emika Pretend
Emika - Pretend / Professional Loving
(12"/Promo CD/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN12291/ZENCDS291P/ZENDNLS291, 2011-08-29

One of the most hotly-tipped female artists around right now, Emika returns with the last warm up single for her forthcoming, self-titled debut album. A double-A of obession and alienation, of getting lost in the music and struggling to find your way back, the anglo-czech artist based in Berlin shows once again that there can be more to being a singer-songwriter than an acoustic guitar and a winsome smile. Remixes come from all quarters. Berlin experimentalists Brandt Brauer Frick turn in a stripped back 8 minute mix, operating on the borders between classical music and techno. Kyle Hall's techno is, of course, born from the wellspring of Detroit and his take on Pretend reflects this. DJ Rashad's more frenetic interpretation, on the other hand, brings us closer to a Chicago take on witch-house. In an age of idnetikit pop starlets Emika has always stood out from the pack. A hugely talented producer who uses her voice and her own obsessions to craft something unique, her combination of frailty and power has had her tipped by everyone from Resident Advisor to The Guardian.

Amon Tobin - Isam Licensing Edition - Hard to find on Ninja Tune!!

Amon Tobin Isam Licensing Edition
Amon Tobin - Isam Licensing Edition
(promo CD only) Ninja Tune ZENCD168, 2011-06

Ninja Tune collectors and Amon Tobin fans will have to hunt this rare, promo-only, 2CD set. It's made for licensing purposes, so don't even think about getting one for reviewing... Thankfully the friendly people at Ping Pong (Ninja Tune's promo agency in France) have let me give it a listen and scanned the artwork just for Paris DJs readers. It's a double digipack CD, collecting on the second disc the b-sides from the Surge single, a few edited or instrumental versions of tracks from the Isam album, the two bonus tracks to be found on the digital version or on the limited CD package... and two exclusive, unreleased tracks, the grimey and oniric Carry On Marmaduke and the nearly ambient, very trippy Ode To Morricone. Good luck hunting this one!!

Amon Tobin - Surge - EP out on Ninja Tune

Amon Tobin Surge
Amon Tobin - Surge EP
(12"/Digital Single) Ninja Tune ZEN12292/ZENCDS292P, 2011-07-11

Although it feels almost sacregilious to take a track out of ISAM and release it as a single, we're going to have a go. Surge is one of the short, sweet, standout moments of a remarkable record. Beautiful and mournful, it sounds a little like two lovers being strafed with dark matter. First up on the remix tip is none other than… Amon Tobin himself, who in his more Two Fingers guise, ups the beats and the sub-bass for a satisfyingly heavy experience. Labelmate Emika, a long-time admirer of Amon's work, reinvents the tune as a fragile, almost churchlike experience, her Czech singing delicate but strangely powerful. 16bit take up the last place on the EP turning in a raw, bass-heavy dubstepper which takes us a long way from where we started but in a very satisying way!

Emika - Count Backwards - out on Ninja Tune

Emika Count Backwards
Emika - Count Backwards
(12"/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN12263/ZENDNLS263, 2011-04-11

Emika's latest single Count Backwards is released on Ninja Tune on 18 April on 12" vinyl and download. Remixes come from British dubstep producers Kryptic Minds who have released several albums, their latest, Lost All Faith, on their own Defcom Records last year. Marcel Dettmann transforms the original song into a deep Techno meditation for which Emika re-sang the vocals. Dettmann is a producer and resident DJ resident at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. Emika explains: "Count Backwards is the story of an over-fed yet undernourished soul in search of a little peace and quiet. In times of stress, you can count your date of birth backwards or spell your birth month backwards and the logical side of the mind is kicked into action, resulting in a feeling of calm. Counting backwards is a coping mechanism in overwhelming moments of panic."

Emika - Double Edge

(12"/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN12262/ZENDNLS262, 2010-05-24

Is ignorance bliss? That's the question Emika asks on the second single from her forthcoming and eagerly awaited debut album. Once again mixing pop with dark tones taken from dubstep and techno, the sonics reflect paranoid perspectives of relationships poised between fulfilment and collapse. Atmospherics were captured in Teufelsberg, West Berlin on a cold winter's day. "I focused on capturing sound, phenomena that exist independently of people and personality", Emika explains. "But once back in the studio they become the language I use to tell stories".

Emika - Drop The Other

Emika - Drop The Other
(12"/Download) Ninja Tune ZEN12240/ZENDNLS240, 2010-01-18

Drop The Other, the first EP from Emika - and already making a late shout for one of the year's most auspicious debuts. Even before release, Emika's has received airplay from tastemaking DJs like Zane Lowe + Mary-Anne Hobbs. On Drop The Other, eerie, near-classical piano collides into glitched-out edits and skitering drum patterns, while speaker-shattering lows rub against Emika's own hushed, cryptic vocals, the iconoclastic blend marking her an artist that makes a habit of defying expectation. Just when you think you know what you're hearing, Emika flips the script: the cinematic sound architecture evokes the deepest techno, but the tempo moves too slow, the beats too jagged; the sub-bass, meanwhile, could shudder the most underground dubstep club, but it's paired with haunting, syncopated vocal hooks that suggest Aaliyah's work with Timbaland taken to its darkest extreme.

Fink - See It All

Fink See It All
Fink - See It All
(Download) Ninja Tune ZENDNLS250, 2009-10-12

Fink returns with the second single from his 3rd album of his Ninja Tune Records trilogy, Sort of Revolution. See It All, one of the album's signature tracks, is blessed with falling piano lines, pulsing electric bass, and a driving rhythm which combines relentless propulsion with sublime subtlety. Q&A finds Fink in a deeply soulful and moody a cappella, building a tune from his own vocal parts - layers of harmony buzzing through your ears, as warm and rich as it is clever and hypnotic. Both of these tracks were recently recorded live on Fink's latest Gilles Peterson Maida Vale session for BBC Radio 1, while the LP version of See It All has just been confirmed as the opening track on the season premiere on the longstanding and now infamous TV show CSI:NY.
