Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada - Coconut Rock
(CD) Eighteen Street Lounge ESL151, 2009-06-23
Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respective band-leaders of famed ensembles Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas, once again unite under the Ocote Soul Sounds banner for their new full length album, Coconut Rock, released on ESL Music on June 23rd. After two stellar albums, this time around Coconut Rock finds the duo loosened up, slipping effortlessly into their trademark psychedelic afro-latin funk groove. From the descarga rhythms of album lead-off The Revolt of the Cockroach People to the cumbia bounce of Tu Fin, Mi Comienzo to the easy guitar soundscapes of Vendendo Saude e Fe featuring Brazilian songstress Tita Lima, Coconut Rock is the third chapter in Ocote Soul Sound's unparalleled journey through sonic realms beyond!
Last news I got from Martin was when he sent me the latest Ocote Soul Sounds 12 inch at the beginning of the year. He was enthousiastic about doing an exclusive mix for Paris DJs. I now there's a new Antibalas album to be recorded next month (June 2009) so I guess we should hear from him in July... Update August 2009 - Martin came to visit us in Paris and did collaboration work with Grant Phabao, Doctor L and Loik Dury respectively. He should be back in Europe touring with Ocote Soul Sounds early 2010. And he'll be back soon for a 30mn mix of exclusive Antibalas and Ocote Soul Sounds rarities! Yeepaa!! (Djouls)

Nickodemus - Sun People
(CD) Eighteen Street Lounge, 2009-06-16
Brooklyn's own outernational deejay Nickodemus returns with his second solo album, Sun People! Inspired by sunny days and good people, the album mixes positive sonic vibes from all over the globe including Guinea, Colombia, Puerto Rico , Brazil, Romania, India, Turkey, United Kingdom and New York City! Real Live Show features on the uplifting hip-hop jam Sun Children while Quantic lends his unmistakable groove on the salsa ritmo of La Lluvia. Not to be outdone, Brazilian songstress Liliana Araujo features on the hot samba of Gira Do Sol while Mandingo vocalist Ismael Kouyate lends his Afro-beat groove to N'Dini. Packed with brilliant collaborations, Sun People is a pan-continental party not to be missed... at least that's what the press release says! We'd love to verify those facts so, if anyone's got a copy to send, we'd be able to hear it/play it/review it... (Djouls)

Ancient Astronauts - Heart Of The Future Mix
(MP3 Download) Eighteen Street Lounge, 2009-05
With a little under a month to go before ESL drops the Ancient Astronauts intergalactic masterpiece We Are To Answer on June 9th, the space dwelling duo hurl an exclusive mix towards our little green and blue planet! Entitled 'Heart of the Future,' the hour plus mix is the perfect precursor to their debut full length, and serves as an important introduction to understanding the influences of Kabanjak and Dogu. From old school hip hop legends, to new school deep beat masters, the mix skips in and out of genres lacing hints of reggae with thick slabs of funk, creating an overarching vibe of just damn good summer hanging music.

Paris DJs Soundstem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.7
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-04
The 'Mashed Potato' was a dance. The 'Popcorn' too. 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn' is a series of selections of all kinds of African tripy and groovy music from all over the world.
This seventh volume focuses on 2008 releases, with a rare 7 inch b-side from Bibi Tanga (France), a new track from Blank Zulu alias the Poets Of Rhythm on the fantastic Jazz&Milk label (Germany), an excerp from the new and timeless Ocote Soul Sounds album on ESL (USA), two oldies taken from two recent superb Nigeria old school compilations on Soundway (UK) and Strut (UK). You might also discover The Ottawa Bros. from Canada, before rejoicing to hear another Karl Hector & The Malcouns ethio-funk track (who'll be back with a new mix at the end of the month), and crying while listening to the incredible Beatles cover from 60s Ghanean singer Charlotte Dada.
