Record Store Day 2012 - April 21st 2012

This year's edition of Record Store Day is quite event with the rise of vinyl sales, with a lot of labels pressing some limited goodies for the occasion. Well of course the major ones are rushing on this marketing thing to try and sell the same music they've been selling for years over various formats, but some indie labels are very inventive and it was not easy to make a selection of records to check. The absolute must buy is the vinyl edition of the new Dr John album, produced by a Black Keys guy and featuring Max Whitefield from the illustrious Whitefield Brothers on drums. Trust us, this vinyl, while maybe not that limited, is the record to get on this 21st of April! We've also found some very nice goodies from Adrian Younge vs. Adrian Quesada (!), Anthony Joseph, DJ Format, Charles Bradley, CSC Funk Band, a Dark Star from 1972 in Paris from the Grateful Dead, the first Phish album Junta, Marco Benevento, Quantic & Alice Russell and more…

DJ Format - Statement of Intent

The new DJ Format album is coming out on Feb 27th but it's already been playing on repeat @ Paris DJs for a few weeks! The man is one of the most interesting and groovy DJs from the England, fresh, funky and shining like none other on the island. With his friend Simon James, DJ Format has released as The Simonsound in may 2010 an astounding album, Reverse Engineering, and if you slept on this one it's high time waking up! We deeply wanted to host a Simonsound mix on Paris DJs, but since Format was in between albums, preparing this Statement of Intent, we finally agreed on publishing a DJ Format & The Simonsound mix, blending psychedelic and electric records with a hip hop spirit. 6.000 people downloaded the mix and we hope they'll be at least as many to buy the vinyl (or the CD if there's no vinyl, or the digital release if you don't mind paying for owning nothing). Anyway now's the time for the DJ Format album and both old school b-boys and psychedelic music nerds will be more than pleased. This is really heavy shit, and with many guests: The Simonsound, of course, Sureshot La Rock, Edan, Mr Lif, Nostalgia 77, Beta Hector... Prized choices for us in this orgasmic collection of music are the two Simonsound collaborations, the retro-futuristic psyched-up breakbeats of Battle of The Planets and the party-people-ready Beyond disco which we'll be spinning very very soon in our monthly Bag of Goodies mix, and the over-groovy James Brown-esque Horse Power.

Hot on the heels of Djouls' new regular column, the playlist of physical CDs and vinyls sent to us by labels and artists, here's our monthly mix of goodies extracted from both those records and Loik's digital diggings. The duo has earned quite a reputation selection-wise and have cooked last weekend a one hour mix of brand new music, the 4th in the 'Bag of Goodies' series... We're opening a new section on the site, with each month a selection of records that labels, artists and distributors sent to us. By records we mean vinyl LPs, 12 inches, 10 inches, 7 inches, and CDs. Not the pay-to-listen-but-you-don't-own-anything kind of digital files, but the real treat, which is a LOT more work than the standard mp3. The Simonsound - Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is the debut album from The Simonsound, an intriguing variety of sounds, including '50s and '60s-inspired space music, mood music for film and TV, haunting vocal tracks, and switched-on cover versions of classics realised on the Moog synthesiser. Made of duo Simon James and Matt Ford (aka DJ Format) the album is already getting series support from across the globe. Gilles Peterson is a big fan, playing tracks from the album on his 'All Winners' show and inviting the duo in to record a session at the illustrious BBC Maida Vale studios for broadcast this May on Radio One.
