Pax Nicholas & The Nettey Family - Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef

Pax Nicholas The Nettey Family
Pax Nicholas & The Nettey Family - Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef
(CD/LP) Daptone Records DAP017, 2009-09-01

Convinced of his skills as a drummer and singer, in 1971 Fela Anikulapo Kuti made Nicholas Addo-Nettey a full member of Africa 70 on congas and backing vocals. While playing with Fela and recording on all his releases between 1971 and 1978, Nicholas always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef in 1973. Na Teef... is a heavy afrofunk set, recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were also set to tape. Fela was not amused when he heard how strong the album was, reportedly telling Addo-Nettey "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!". And so it was; despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years. The story would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner, a true vinyl digger who found a copy somewhere in West Africa, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records.

PLEASE SOMEONE SEND ME A COPY OF THIS PLEASE!!

Menahan Street Band - The Wolf b/w Bushwick Lullaby

Menahan Street Band The Wolf
Menahan Street Band - The Wolf b/w Bushwick Lullaby
(7") Daptone Records DAP-1045, 2009-04-08

The Menahan Street Band challenges the Budos Band to a duel with The Wolf, the fast-paced ethio tinged number that has recently served as the opening song of their on-stage appearances. The song evokes unique imagery in the mind - part sun-drenched ethiopian desert, part frozen northern tundra. This song is dedicated to Joe 'The Wolf' Colgan for building the new Dunham Studios.Without telling Michels and Movshon, Brenneck put a little something special in their gin and tonics. The result is Bushwick Lullaby, a highly syncopated slow placed number entirely indicative of the participant's mind-state at the time of recording. Next time you put your kids to sleep, why not sing them the 'Bushwick Lullaby'?

Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens - What Have You Done, My Brother?

Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens What Have You Done, My Brother
Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens - What Have You Done, My Brother?
(CD/LP) Daptone Records DAP-016, 2009-05-26

Hundreds of new artists rear their heads on the scene every year, each struggling in vain to distinguish themselves from the rest with the gimmicks and novelties of the latest radio fads. However, rarely will an artist come along that can transcend the boxes and boundaries of our musical landscape with nothing but the pure soulfulness of her voice. Naomi Shelton is one of these precious artists. Though she, like many others, grew up singing with her sisters in their Alabama church, she has also spent much of her life in the soul clubs around New York, and her 45s, "41st St. Breakdown" and "Wind Your Clock” b/w “Talking 'Bout a Good Thing,” have long been revered and prized by funk DJs around the globe. Now, with her first official full-length release coming this May, it's clear that her singing is equally influenced by both facets of her life. This is soul music - informed by the church, perhaps, but soul music nonetheless, relatable to all. Which means that What Have You Done, My Brother?, an uplifting record that conveys Naomi's energy, her excitement, her love of music, her compassion, is no ordinary album.
