Back in 2006 the good people of Ninja Tune decided they wanted to start a rock label. But not any old, boring, run-of-the-mill rock label. Not a rock label pumping out the latest British indie four piece bands, or carefully crafted facsimiles of classic rawk. Not a label peopled by ironic Hoxtonites playing pisstakes of AC/DC. Not a rock label licensing in already-successful US acts and re-packaging them for the UK market. A rock label that took the same irreverent, iconoclastic, vaguely psychedelic attitude towards that type of music as the parent label had taken to various aspects of dance music. The results of this project are just now beginning to reach fruition and what better way to celebrate (and introduce listeners to a rapidly expanding roster) than with a "Pay-No-More-Than-£2.99" sampler showcasing some of the finest moments from the misfits, freaks and visionaries shaping the label's sound?

Cougar has recently announced the signing of a multiple-album deal with legendary London-based record label Ninja Tune (Kid606, Coldcut, Kid Koala, The Bug, Amon Tobin, Cinematic Orchestra, OneSelf, etc.) in collaboration with their new guitar-driven imprint, Counter Records. The forthcoming album, Patriot, should see the light of day in late summer, with release tours covering the globe. Debut full-length Law CD/LP (available now) was mixed by John Mcentire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake).

Cougar return with the second single from their forthcoming album Patriot and it's a stormer! Stay Famous plays with the old loud/quiet rock dynamic, mixing in bleeding-fingers riffing, melodic beauty and plangent counterpoint. Welcome to the world of Cougar. This, the first single from their second album "Patriot" (and their first for Counter), shows what the quintet from Madison, Wisconsin are all about. Don't be fooled by their lack of a vocalist into expecting boffinised math-rock. From the very first bar of "Thundersnow" you know you're dealing with a band that can hit hard, channelling the spirit of both Fugazi and Four Tet into proper rock-god wig out - muscular riffing, machine gun drumming and a feel for melody which raises this beyond any hint of bombast.
