Each month we're selecting 12 records (vinyls, CDs) out of the ones labels, artists and distributors have nicely sent to us. Contact us is you want to be listed in this section next month.

Our march selection was not an easy one to make and we had to leave a few records on the side such as the new albums from Slugabed or 2nd Class Citizen (watermarked CDs, how come labels have money to spend on crazy stuff like that is a mystery), or from Belleruche on Tru Thoughts and Blockhead on Ninja Tune (labels we strongly advise to check our Community Management services)… Of course the priority goes to our friends and collaborators, such as Ebo Taylor (our own Grant Phabao co-produced 2 tracks on this new album), Souleance, The Poets of Rhythm, The Cheebacabra or Quantic. Then we focused on the people we've interviewed, such as Calibro 35, Chicha Libre or Hard Proof Afrobeat… And finally added a few cool releases sent to us by friendly labels Tramp, Jakarta, Ropeadope or Record Kicks. Next month we should talk have news from Brownout, Spain, Dwight Trible, Mancini & The Creepers, The Soul Snatchers among others… and of course some nice surprises!

Paris DJs Soundsystem Bag Of Goodies Vol 6

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.6

The march 2012 Bag of Goodies selection by Djouls and Loik is one for the dancers, soulful and full of breaks. Tel-Aviv funksters The Apples are back with a new album on Audio Montage - check our Israeli Funk Mix for more on that scene - and the first single Thang is a killer one, also available on a limited 7 inch… Next we have The Funk Ark, an afrobeat/afrolatin funk band from Washington DC. Their new album High Noon is produced by our friend Adrian Quesada and is one of the must-have of this spring! The latest from Italian soundtracks-obsessed Calibro 35 is just plain amazing and we could...

Calibro 35 - Ogni Riferimento A Persone... - Out now on Calibro 35

Calibro 35 Ogni Riferimento A Fatti Accaduti E Puramente Casuale
Calibro 35 - Ogni Riferimento A Persone Esistenti O A fatti Realmente Accaduti E Puramente Casuale
(CD/LP/Download) Calibro 35, 2012-03-31

When we did Tommaso Colliva's interview (Calibro 35 founder, producer and mastermind) last November, he told us the concept of Calibro 35's upcoming album was to 'put five italian musicians in a studio in Brooklyn for five days and see what comes out of it...' Well, what comes out is a great piece of work, maybe Calibro 35 best album to date, and one of most addictive records of 2012. The italian wizards haven't given up their soundtrack obsessions, but this time you will only find two covers on Ogni Riferimento... (one Morricone, one Piero Piccioni's works). All the other tracks were composed by the band grooving at its best. The superb production from Tommaso Colliva enhances the funk/jazz and vintage 70s pop compositions. This direct and epic sound reveals what has become an impressive jam band.

The Friday Night Session radio show hosted by Andrew Jervis (former Ubiquity Records A&R) has just relaunched his website with a brand new name, The Sport of Selection. First guest were Azaxx & Diesler, then Rob Luis of Tru Thoughts Recordings. I was more than proud to get invited to do the third mix of the show, with a special guest interview with Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6/Brownswood Records), followed by an exclusive mix by myself ('Djouls of the Paris DJs'). Adrian Younge presents Something About April performed by Venice Dawn - out on Wax Poetics Records

Adrian Younge presents - Something About April - performed by Venice Dawn
(CD/LP/Digital) Wax Poetics Records, 2011-11-29

A few years ago multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge composed an original score for the Blaxploitation tribute and parody Black Dynamite - one of the most hilarious movies of the past decade. And now he's back with a new cinematic project under the mysterious name of Venice Dawn, a killer concept album called Something about April. This is the soundtrack for a fictional film that hasn't been directed yet, in the fashion of the late 60s scores. Playing most of the instruments as he's done on his previous album (plus a very special keyboard of his own called the Selene), Younge is helped this time by Motown legend Dennis Coffey on guitar, funkateer Shawn Lee, italian OST specialists Calibro 35 and young soul singer Rebecca Jordan. Imagine Ennio Morricone meets Al Green meets Portishead and you will get a pretty precise idea of the highly romantic, heavy-soul and psychedelic flavours of the Venice Dawn project.
Check our exclusive interview with Adrian Younge on Paris DJs.

Il Cinema Secondo Calibro 35 Paris DJs Mix

Il Cinema Secondo Calibro 35

Adesso parliamo italiano… from our strong italian connection comes Calibro 35's founder and mastermind Tommaso Colliva. Tommaso explains in our exclusive interview that he's been a diehard italian soundtrack collector since he was a teen. Then he had the fine idea to bring together great italian musicians and play covers from the maestri (Gianni Ferrio, Bruno Nicolai, Ennio Morricone, etc.) as well as writing compositions inspired by these mentors. The funkiest italian act Calibro 35 was born. For Il cinema secondo Calibro 35 (cinema according to Calibro 35), he's selected his favorite tracks...

Interview with Tommaso Colliva / Calibro 35 (english version)

Calibro 35
Interview with Tommaso Colliva (Calibro 35)
(Interview by Nicolas Ragonneau for Paris DJs - november 2011)

Calibro 35 is an italian four-piece band (Luca Cavina on bass, Enrico Gabrielli on keyboards, Massimo Martellotta on guitars, Fabio Rondanini on drums) created in Milan by mastermind Tommaso Colliva. A great fan of 60s and early 70s italian soundtracks (polizieschi - the italian thrillers - and gialli), Tommaso noticed that everybody pretends to know italian soundtrack, but no one really plays nor document this music anymore. Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai excepted, who else than diehard collectors remember Gianni Ferrio, Stelvio Cipriani or Gianni Mazza? Most of the time polizieschi or gialli were minor movies, but the music indeed was major (A-music for B-movies!). Here comes Calibro 35, playing this repertoire the hard and funky way, and composing new material in the manner of the forgotten masters of the genre, recording three albums so far (Calibro 35, Ritornano Quelli di... and RARE), released in Europe by Ghost Records and Nublu in the US by. Besides, they've just collaborated on Adrian Younge's new project Something About April performed by Venice Dawn (Wax Poetics Records).
In addition to the italian soundtrack killer mix he's just cooked for us, Tommaso talks about his longtime research, Calibro 35 creation and musicians, the next Calibro album and being a 30-years-old sound engineer for MUSE or Afterhours.

Interview de Tommaso Colliva / Calibro 35 (french version)

Calibro 35
