Wednesday 18 January 2012, 18:16 1
The Real Tuesday Weld were formed by Stephen Coates in 1999 inspired by dreams of crooner Al Bowlly and the American actress Tuesday Weld. They're influenced by 1930s jazz, Serge Gainsbourg, Ennio Morricone and minimalist electronica and are known for a series of critically acclaimed albums, arts projects and award winning collaborations with film makers. We started spotting them on Paris DJs way back in 2005… and fast forward to 2012 we were glad to be able to interview Stephen last week (read it in english or in french), and managed to get a mix from him cooked especialy for Paris DJs. The...

Interview with Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld, english version)
Thursday 12 January 2012, 14:50

Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld)
(Interview by Nicolas Ragonneau for Paris Djs, january 2012)
Stephen Coates is a man of many masks, illusions and smoke-and-mirrors. Under his weird female pseudonym The Real Tuesday Weld he’s released impossible-to-classify records since the end of the Twentieth Century. I, Lucifer (2004), The London Book Of the Dead (2007) and The End of The World (2008) were major achievements. Stephen's baroque and romantic world is tinged with bittersweet melancholy. London is its sole setting, and the Clerkenwell Kid (one of his other aliases) a recurring character. Long before the electro-swing fashion, blending early jazz, cabaret, easy-listening and electro, he invented a genre of his own called ‘antique beat’. His new album Songs for The Last Werewolf (Crammed Records/Europe, Six Degrees Records/USA) is released on Tuesday (coincidence?) 16th of January and it’s the OST of the eponymous - and critically acclaimed - book by Glen Duncan (The Last Werewolf, Canongate Books, 2011). His side-project, the psychedelic garage-blues band Lazarus and The Crash Plane (read the review here), has also released its first record on his Antique Beat label. Stephen talks about the beginning of The Real Tuesday Weld, the way he uses dreams in his life, his love for London… just before releasing the nice mix he’s cooked for us, scheduled for January 17th on Paris DJs.
Interview de Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld, french version)
Thursday 12 January 2012, 14:49

Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld)
Son nouvel album, Songs for The Last Werewolf (x.php/tag/SIX%20DEGREES">Six Degrees Records/USA), sort le 16 janvier.
Baloji - Kinshasa Succursale - out on Crammed Discs
Monday 21 November 2011, 09:32

Baloji - Kinshasa Succursale
(CD/Digital) Crammed Discs CRAM183, 2011-11-21
Baloji, whose name means "sorcerer" in Swahili, was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1978. At the age of 4, he arrived in Belgium with his father and grew up in Liège. As a young adolescent, he discovered hip-hop, a passion for tagging, rap & dance. At 15 he joined the collective Starflam, a figurehead of Belgian hip-hop, who released a platinum selling disc Survivant (2001). Baloji quit the group in 2004 after a number of interpersonal disagreements and turned his back on music. It was a letter from his mother, whom he had not seen since 1981, and winning a poetry competition in Paris, that pushed him back to persue the muse of music. His first solo recording, Hotel Impala (2008), as much of a responce to the letter of his mother as it a quest to find his identity, is coloured with influences of soul, afrobeat, and hip-hop. A certified Gold Record, the album won two Octaves de la music (a Belgian equivalant to the Grammys) as well as the Rapsat-Lelièvre Prize and the Brassens prize for lyric writing. Baloji comes to Crammed Discs with his latest opus Kinshasa Succursale to be released November 2011. The album features contributions from some of the finest musicians from the capital of the DRC, including Konono N°1 & Zaïko Langa-Langa, as well as three brand-new remixes.

Shantel - Planet Paprika

Shantel - Planet Paprika
(CD) Essay Recordings/Crammed AYCD23, 2009-08-28
Shantel's new album Planet Paprika has its own set of values: the pursuit of genuinely European pop music. This is where north meets south and east meets west and they are all equal in the mind of the musician. Shantel is driving on deeper into the creation of a truly Central European pop music. Its roots are in the past, in the popular music that has fired the imagination of generations for centuries - and yet it is something totally new and different. Planet Paprika is taking the concerts halls, clubs and festivals of Europe by storm. The first, long-awaited single will be released in July to blow the cobwebs out of your ears. At the same time, Shantel will be touring with his Bucovina Club Orkestar. And then, with a big brass fanfare comes the grand finale: Shantel releases his new album at the end of August!

Mocky - Saskamodie
Monday 23 March 2009, 21:15

Mocky - Saskamodie
(CD) Crammed/Wagram, 2009-03-23
Named after a song Mocky made up when he was seven using imaginary words, "Saskamodie" is a new future/retro classic: a return to pure musical expression by a cutting edge artist who is no longer bound by the electronic music scene. At different points you'll hear a vintage soundtrack suite, a debonair jazz record (minus the solos) or a golden era '60s soul ballad recording... yet, as if all these charming stylistic sorties weren't loveable enough, cut "Saskamodie" through the middle and you'll find that sweet, inescapably infectious melody is the lifeblood trickling through its core. Featuring Taylor Savvy, Gonzales, Jamie Lidell, and Feist.
