Turntable Technology is the highly anticipated exceptional double artist album from beat technician Pablo on Soma Records, stepping away from the staple label sound to unleash a synthesis of anarchic beats, soundscapes and medleys. Pablo is Michael Hunter, the Glaswegian musical talent that brought the dubbed-out goodness of Butches Brew to Soma's sister label, Fenetik, under his Butch Cassidy Sound System alias. He has produced under his Pablo guise on Good Looking Records, Fenetik Music and Red Hook Recordings and composed the theme and incidental music for the computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas & Grand Theft Auto IV; music that has been heard by millions of gamers, all over the world. Turntable Technology is a diverse and mesmerizing album that defies all genre boundaries. Sounding like a reincarnation of The Avalanches crossed with De La Soul and The Cinematic Orchestra right through to Ennio Morricone and Jon Brion, Pablo fuses rare beats and breaks, hip-hop, soul and jazz together with soundtrack, classical, down-tempo to create an album unlike any you will have heard. Experimenting heavily with instrumentation, many of the parts are played by Pablo himself, including the Cuatro guitar, Puerto Rico's national instrument.

I was the first person in the worldwide music medium to listen to and write a review about the infamous Human After All bullshit from Daft Punk, two months before everybody (read it in French here or with some of the 700+ comments I've deleted since here), and as no-one was believing my music detective skills, I decided to spread on Soulseek a bit of proof with this eclectic mix, launched for Xmas 2004,...

Un parallèle peut être fait entre nos deux albums world de l'année, le , "Kulchaklash", numéro un de notre "Best Of 2004 Part 1" en "Reggae Dub & World Grooves", et ce Butch Cassidy Sound System, "Butches Brew", numéro un de notre "Best Of 2004 - Part 2" toujours en "Reggae Dub & World Grooves". Pas seulement pour le titre "d'album d'influence reggae roots de l'année", pour lequel il sera difficile de les départager, mais aussi pour le chemin parcouru pour parvenir, chacun de leur côté, à un premier album destiné à devenir un classique.
En effet pendant que Grant Phabao, avant de lancer son label TIMEC avec quelques amis proches pour y sortir ses productions, sortait sur le label Pro-Zak Trax quelques maxis et autant de perles de house ("Tub"), de reggae ("Andub Head Yüdü") et autres beats downtempoisants... Michael Hunter sortait lui sous pseudo Pablo ou Butch Cassidy Sound System quelques gemmes house ("Brothers & Sisters"), hip hop ("Cissy Strut") et autres beats funky-relaxifiants, sur les labels Good Looking Records, Guidance, Fenetik ou sur le label de son frère Paul Red Hook Imprint! Sur la compilation de chez Guidance "Hi-Fidelity Dub Sessions Vol.1", on les retrouve d'ailleurs tous les deux avec un track, un petit bijou de dub roots qui aura marqué pas mal d'esprits et sera par la suite, pour chacun, repris sur pas mal de compiles "loungy"!!
Après ces quelques tracks, ils mettront chacun 3 ans à boucler leur chef d'oeuvre. Sortis en 2004, aucun de ces deux albums n'a été encore rendu disponible en France, hormis sur quelques sites web, aucun disquaire ne les a encore proposé!! Difficile de savoir de qui entre le label, les distributeurs, les grossistes, les magasins et les journalistes qui fait le moins bien son boulot... Et la liste des "coincidences" ne s'arrète pas là. Contrairement à la majorité sur le créneau qui se borne à coller des voix roots sur des beats moderne, ces deux-là cherchent plutôt à construire de véritables écrins sans étiquette globale pour leur samples et leurs vocaux, puis ensuite à modeler le tout avec cette vibration jamaïquaine reconnaissable entre mille, ce feeling de dubmeister nourri au son de King Tubby, Sir Coxsone Dodd & les autres. Le résultat est organique et authentique, à la fois roots et moderne, mélangeant styles vintage (soul, funk, blaxploitation, hip hop, reggae 70's, rub-a-dub 80's) et sons plus actuels (house, dub). Deux chefs d'oeuvres de reggae-funk à dégoter au plus vite.
