(Download) Counter Records COUNTDNL031, 2009-12-07
Since last witnessing our favourite professor take a facelong plunge down a slope of breasty moguls, in technicolour animalation, Ape School's Michael Johnson has enlisted star pupils for their interpretations of the subject matter at hand. Gold stars go out to the baker's half-dozen of this session's gifted class for their songful remixes of Ape School originals from the self-titled debut.

Various - STRIKE! - A Counter Records Sampler
(CD/Download) Counter Records COUNTCD030/COUNDNL030, 2009-10-05
Back in 2006 the good people of Ninja Tune decided they wanted to start a rock label. But not any old, boring, run-of-the-mill rock label. Not a rock label pumping out the latest British indie four piece bands, or carefully crafted facsimiles of classic rawk. Not a label peopled by ironic Hoxtonites playing pisstakes of AC/DC. Not a rock label licensing in already-successful US acts and re-packaging them for the UK market. A rock label that took the same irreverent, iconoclastic, vaguely psychedelic attitude towards that type of music as the parent label had taken to various aspects of dance music. The results of this project are just now beginning to reach fruition and what better way to celebrate (and introduce listeners to a rapidly expanding roster) than with a "Pay-No-More-Than-£2.99" sampler showcasing some of the finest moments from the misfits, freaks and visionaries shaping the label's sound?

Ape School (Michael Johnson) - Wail To God
(Download) Counter Records COUNTDNL022, 2009-05-25
Michael Johnson presents Ape School with this lead-off EP, the sunniest
slice of glam-psych from his forthcoming second album, the self-titled
debut as Ape School. Like analog electronics breathing bizarre pop
songs, sounding not a million miles from cLOUDDEAD's manic hook-making,
MJ combines a feel for a tune with delicious vocal harmonies that would
do the Fleet Foxes proud. Throw in a level of sonic experimentation
which would do previous collaborators like Daedelus and former bands
Holopaw and Lilys proud and you have the makings of a particularly fine
record.

Ape School (Michael Johnson) - Ape School
(CD/LP/Download) Counter Records COUNT019/COUNTCD019/COUNTDNL019, 2009-06-15 (UK), 2009-04-28 (North America)
The wonderful and expansive Ape School album that Daedelus brought to
Counter's welcome mat is finally unleashed. Made by Michael Johnson
(ex-Lilys, ex-Holopaw, current Professor of Acousmatics), the
self-titled Ape School debut is a newfangled lesson in glamatic pop,
with a sweeping palate of sound conjured from archaic electronics,
built on rock structures and instruments, and soared by MJ's
distinctive croon (which you'll remember from Daedelus' "Make It So").
The album drops April 28 in North America. The vinyl LP contains an
exclusive wax-only song called "Sigh Something", while the download
bundle contains the digital exclusive "General Distraction". Ape School is released in the UK on 6th July.
