Paris DJs selection for Record Store Day 2012

Record Store Day 2012
Record Store Day 2012 - April 21st 2012

This year's edition of Record Store Day is quite event with the rise of vinyl sales, with a lot of labels pressing some limited goodies for the occasion. Well of course the major ones are rushing on this marketing thing to try and sell the same music they've been selling for years over various formats, but some indie labels are very inventive and it was not easy to make a selection of records to check. The absolute must buy is the vinyl edition of the new Dr John album, produced by a Black Keys guy and featuring Max Whitefield from the illustrious Whitefield Brothers on drums. Trust us, this vinyl, while maybe not that limited, is the record to get on this 21st of April! We've also found some very nice goodies from Adrian Younge vs. Adrian Quesada (!), Anthony Joseph, DJ Format, Charles Bradley, CSC Funk Band, a Dark Star from 1972 in Paris from the Grateful Dead, the first Phish album Junta, Marco Benevento, Quantic & Alice Russell and more…

Adrian Younge presents Something About April performed by Venice Dawn - out on Wax Poetics Records

Adrian Younge presents - Something About April - performed by Venice Dawn
(CD/LP/Digital) Wax Poetics Records, 2011-11-29

A few years ago multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge composed an original score for the Blaxploitation tribute and parody Black Dynamite - one of the most hilarious movies of the past decade. And now he's back with a new cinematic project under the mysterious name of Venice Dawn, a killer concept album called Something about April. This is the soundtrack for a fictional film that hasn't been directed yet, in the fashion of the late 60s scores. Playing most of the instruments as he's done on his previous album (plus a very special keyboard of his own called the Selene), Younge is helped this time by Motown legend Dennis Coffey on guitar, funkateer Shawn Lee, italian OST specialists Calibro 35 and young soul singer Rebecca Jordan. Imagine Ennio Morricone meets Al Green meets Portishead and you will get a pretty precise idea of the highly romantic, heavy-soul and psychedelic flavours of the Venice Dawn project.

Interview with Tommaso Colliva / Calibro 35 (english version)

Calibro 35
Interview with Tommaso Colliva (Calibro 35)
(Interview by Nicolas Ragonneau for Paris DJs - november 2011)

Calibro 35 is an italian four-piece band (Luca Cavina on bass, Enrico Gabrielli on keyboards, Massimo Martellotta on guitars, Fabio Rondanini on drums) created in Milan by mastermind Tommaso Colliva. A great fan of 60s and early 70s italian soundtracks (polizieschi - the italian thrillers - and gialli), Tommaso noticed that everybody pretends to know italian soundtrack, but no one really plays nor document this music anymore. Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai excepted, who else than diehard collectors remember Gianni Ferrio, Stelvio Cipriani or Gianni Mazza? Most of the time polizieschi or gialli were minor movies, but the music indeed was major (A-music for B-movies!). Here comes Calibro 35, playing this repertoire the hard and funky way, and composing new material in the manner of the forgotten masters of the genre, recording three albums so far (Calibro 35, Ritornano Quelli di... and RARE), released in Europe by Ghost Records and Nublu in the US by. Besides, they've just collaborated on Adrian Younge's new project Something About April performed by Venice Dawn (Wax Poetics Records).
In addition to the italian soundtrack killer mix he's just cooked for us, Tommaso talks about his longtime research, Calibro 35 creation and musicians, the next Calibro album and being a 30-years-old sound engineer for MUSE or Afterhours.

Interview de Tommaso Colliva / Calibro 35 (french version)

Calibro 35
