The Black Cat Hard 2 Find Vol 1
The Black Cat - Hard 2 Find Vol.1
(Download/Limited CD) Colored-Inc. COLI001, 2009-02-24

The Black Cat's first album on the new Colored-Inc. label launched by Djouls and Doctor L is what some could say a 'world' album. Blending from Latin grooves with Afro rhythms, Reggae harmonies with American Jazz or Funk vibes, Saudade with Jamaican riddims, Psychedelic Funk with Electronic R&B, Psychedelia and Hip Hop, with some lusty doses of Rub-a-Dub , Afro, Soul and Reggae in between, this is indeed a kinda world tour.

All production duties and nearly all instruments by Doctor L & Grant Phabao with star guesting Martin Perna (from Brooklyn), Ocote Soul sounds & Adrian Quesada (from Nicaragua and Austin, Texas) Carlton Livingston, The Lone Ranger and The Jays (from Jamaica), Tita Lima (from Brazil), Allonymous (from Chicago), Roldan (from Cuba), Dom Farkas (from Paris) and Kiala (from Nigeria and Congo). Yep 'world' indeed.

Brownout Aguilas and Cobras
Brownout - Aguilas and Cobras
(CD) Six Degrees Records SDR1162, 2009-09-15

Adrian Quesada is a busy man. When he’s not performing psychedelic salsa jams with Grammy-nominated Austin outfit Grupo Fantasma or playing backing-guitar for Prince (yes, the artist once again known as Prince), he and his fellow Fantasma-mates are bringing the Latin-funk with critically-acclaimed Brownout and the more laidback but no-less-funky Ocote Soul Sounds. The new Brownout record, Aguilas and Cobras (Eagles & Cobras) features their trademark "hardcore latin funk" coupled with generous amounts of psychedelic experimentation and anchored by driving latin percussion and lots of electric guitar interplay. This crew of musicians has deftly avoided the "retro" and "revival" tags with pride, never falling into generic cookie-cutter funk mold. Aguilas and Cobras continues to carry the afro-latin funk torch into the future by creating fresh grooves which are timeless, honest and filled with their own unique vibe.

Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesada - Coconut Rock
(CD) Eighteen Street Lounge ESL151, 2009-06-23

Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respective band-leaders of famed ensembles Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas, once again unite under the Ocote Soul Sounds banner for their new full length album, Coconut Rock, released on ESL Music on June 23rd. After two stellar albums, this time around Coconut Rock finds the duo loosened up, slipping effortlessly into their trademark psychedelic afro-latin funk groove. From the descarga rhythms of album lead-off The Revolt of the Cockroach People to the cumbia bounce of Tu Fin, Mi Comienzo to the easy guitar soundscapes of Vendendo Saude e Fe featuring Brazilian songstress Tita Lima, Coconut Rock is the third chapter in Ocote Soul Sound's unparalleled journey through sonic realms beyond!
Last news I got from Martin was when he sent me the latest Ocote Soul Sounds 12 inch at the beginning of the year. He was enthousiastic about doing an exclusive mix for Paris DJs. I now there's a new Antibalas album to be recorded next month (June 2009) so I guess we should hear from him in July... Update August 2009 - Martin came to visit us in Paris and did collaboration work with Grant Phabao, Doctor L and Loik Dury respectively. He should be back in Europe touring with Ocote Soul Sounds early 2010. And he'll be back soon for a 30mn mix of exclusive Antibalas and Ocote Soul Sounds rarities! Yeepaa!! (Djouls)

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.6 | Comments: 3

GRANT PHABAO AND DJOULS 21st Century Afro Vol 6
Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Vol.6
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-03-25

This 6th mix in our series of 'current Afro music from all over the world' is focused on the funk anglo-saxon musicians kinda always put back into afro-beat. The Souljazz Orchestra, Kaleta & Zozo Afrobeat, The Soul Hustlers, Brownout, Baby Charles, The Budos Band, The New Mastersounds, Midnight Lab Band... You might not know all these bands - yet.

For starters, Canadian afro-funk outfit The Souljazz Orchestra opens the mix with a splendid instrumental, 'State Terrorism', nearly as powerful as the original demo song from 2007, 'Terrorist'. We then move to New York City and the multi-cultural collective Zozo Afrobeat, with a superb cover of Bob Marley's 'Get Up, Stand Up', before crossing over to Orange County, California, and the Soul Hustlers (with members of Breakestra, Nafro, The Mars Volta...). Their debut 7-inch 'Supernatural Thing' features the Snake from the Los Angeles-based neo soul band The Rebirth, it's a re-interpretation of the Ben E. King classic with a mix of west coast Cali-funk and Nigerian afrobeat. 'Part 1' is vocal, here's the rootsy instrumental 'Part 2' available on the b-side of the single.

Adrian Quesada (Ocote Soul Sounds, Grupo Fantasma) is featured once again with his Brownout afro-latin-funk combo. African music is just everywhere and couldn't pass on Austin, Texas... And even in Brighton, funkateers Baby Charles are trying the afro way. Their cover of 'I Bet You Look God On The Dancefloor' is simply amazing UK afrofunk from the United Kingdom. Brooklynites The Budos Band don't need presentation anymore if you're following our mixes, but maybe you haven't heard of UK funk maestros The New Mastersounds yet? The psychedelic afro-funk track from their 2008 album 'Plug & Play' we've chosen should infectiously make you dance. And we conclude this mix in Brooklyn once again, with the second single from the Midnight Lab Band, a conceptual project from NYCTrust label founders Oneman & E's E. Their second single fuses afro-latin vibes with some cosmic disco spirit.

21st Century Afro. We did not lie.

(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-02-27

Lay down, close your eyes, and prepare yourself to travel from the USA to Nigeria, Togo and Europe with a 30mn rainbow of African soundscapes... Heavily featured here is Adrian Quesada who's been baffling us in 2008 with his afro-latin productions with Martin Perna (Antibalas) as Ocote Soul Sounds, as well as with his latin band Grupo Fantasma... We also love the Lighting Head album - you might remember the man from his dubbed Rockers Hi-Fi records or under his Biggabush alias... Completing this mix are rarities from Analog Africa, from Kon and Amir on BBE, french library stuff and a well-titled King Sunny Ade track.

Paris DJs Soundstem - 21st Century Latin Vol.3
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-07

Latin music has always been a favorite for us. We could talk for hours about Deodato, Marcos Valle and so many others. We even managed to produce an 'Electronic Bossa & Psychedelic Soul Samba' album a few years ago with Captain Détendu... Our '21st Century Latin' series is in the same vein of latinized electronics, latin dub, electro-colombian psychedelics, latin jazz & funk... We're diggin' here! Enjoy those new latin grooves from Germany (Mr Confuse, Bahama Soul Club), Spain (Mantecao), Sweden (Dubben), USA (Ocote Soul Sounds, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition) and UK (Quantic, Sidestepper)... and don't forget to be back on February 11th for an explosive party-style 4th volume!

Paris DJs Soundstem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.7
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-01-04

The 'Mashed Potato' was a dance. The 'Popcorn' too. 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn' is a series of selections of all kinds of African tripy and groovy music from all over the world.
This seventh volume focuses on 2008 releases, with a rare 7 inch b-side from Bibi Tanga (France), a new track from Blank Zulu alias the Poets Of Rhythm on the fantastic Jazz&Milk label (Germany), an excerp from the new and timeless Ocote Soul Sounds album on ESL (USA), two oldies taken from two recent superb Nigeria old school compilations on Soundway (UK) and Strut (UK). You might also discover The Ottawa Bros. from Canada, before rejoicing to hear another Karl Hector & The Malcouns ethio-funk track (who'll be back with a new mix at the end of the month), and crying while listening to the incredible Beatles cover from 60s Ghanean singer Charlotte Dada.
