Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Volume Two - Echos Hypnotiques
From the vaults of Albakira Store 1969-1979
(CD/2xLP) Analog Africa AACD066/AALP066, 2009-11-10
Four years in the making, Analog Africa finally presents the second volume of Africa's funkiest band, the mythical Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Volume One (The Vodoun Effect - Funk & Sato from Benins Obscure Labels, 1973 - 1975), released by Analog Africa at the end of 2008, was a collection of amazing lo-fi recordings produced for various labels around Benin. Volume Two showcases superbly recorded tracks, courtesy of the EMI studios in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the best studios in the region. All tracks here were recorded for the mighty Albarika Store label and its enigmatic producer, Adissa Seidou. The idea for this compilation was born five years ago when Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, first heard the addictive funk track "Malin Kpon O" (included here), which was originally released in 1975 on Albarika Store. That discovery triggered the compiler's curiosity and what followed was a long journey through the musical history of Benin and the history of its most important ambassador, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou who started as a children entertainment group and went on to become one of the greatest bands of their era.

WaaterproOf & ZjAk - One hour Mix 100% Poly-Rythmo
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-08-31
SPECIAL PARIS DJS MIX #200!! ONE HOUR LONG!!!
The Tout Puissant Orchestre de Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Benin will be playing tomorrow night at the Jazz A La Villette festival along with Amadou & Mariam (featuring guests Romeo and Michele Stodart from The Magic Numbers), Seun Kuti and DJ RKK (Radio Nova) - don't miss this show!! Anyone deeply into old school African music must have already stumbled upon the Jam Magica blog and its growing index of the Orchestre de Poly-Rythmo complete discography. I go there every month at least, and when I saw that Afrofunk collector ZjAk with the help of his friend WaaterproOf had done a one hour Poly-Ryhtmo mix for Radio Grenouille in Marseilles, I asked them to send us a high-quality version for us to podcast on Paris DJs, the day right before the Paris show.... They even re-recorded the mix to insure the best possible quality. It's all rare dusty 45s and old LPs selected and mixed with love, and remastered with care by Grant Phabao of course. Enjoy!

Paris DJs Soundstem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.9
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C., 2009-04-10
This mix concludes a series of 15 Afro mixes (9 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn' mixtures and 6 '21st Century Afro' cookings) showcasing the current worldwide African music scene and a few bits from its roots. We've already praised before the incredible work of labels such as Soundway or Analog Africa, which appear here again but hey, their compilations were simply the best of last year!! That said, you might want to expect a lot of surprises in the future, since we've sent to Nigeria and Benin some of our own diggers to go and fetch the real rare things.... That, and new productions with Oghene Kologbo (Fela's guitarist until 1978), Amayo (lead singer from Antibalas) and Tony Allen, among others... so stay tuned!

Lay down, close your eyes, and prepare yourself to travel from the USA to Nigeria, Togo and Europe with a 30mn rainbow of African soundscapes... Heavily featured here is Adrian Quesada who's been baffling us in 2008 with his afro-latin productions with Martin Perna (Antibalas) as Ocote Soul Sounds, as well as with his latin band Grupo Fantasma... We also love the Lighting Head album - you might remember the man from his dubbed Rockers Hi-Fi records or under his Biggabush alias... Completing this mix are rarities from Analog Africa, from Kon and Amir on BBE, french library stuff and a well-titled King Sunny Ade track.
